- Step by Step installation of the Home Depot Clopay Basic Garage Door. DIY install of a 8' by 7' single garage door. This is not an endorsement of the brand, just one of the cheapest solution for garage doors.
How to frame a garage door: 00:36 to 01:28
The instructions are for the following models: HDS (8' x 6'6", 8' x 7', 9' x 7'), HDB (8' x 7', 9' x 7'), HDB with windows (9' x 7'), HDBL, and 85A solid & w/ windows.

I came across you video by accident and I could not figure out what was wrong until I saw your video thank you you save me two hundred dollars I really appreciate good job explaining
THANK YOU!!! I just finished installing the same door. Your directions were fantastic. Appreciate you sharing. Actually, followed more of your method then what the instructions shown.
Good tutorial. In the following of your step by step installation to a fault, the placement of rear hanging brackets MUST be at the end of the roller track. Placing the rear spring closer to the front will cause the door to bind and cause damage to the steel cable, rear sheave and the associated mounting hardware. Fortunately for me, I noticed the binding and the referencing of instruction manual indicates the only variance allowable is to the vertical height of rear spring. The 4'' to 12'' inch vertical adjustment is to accommodate for low ceiling height. At 14.59, your attempt to lower the door indicates the exact spot of my binding problem. Dont forget to feed the secondary safety cable through the plastic eyelet, it's there to prevent possible binding and tangling with the primary steel lift cable.
Super great! Every construction is a little different I had to put a 2x6x12 as a stopper before I install my springs. I'm in the middle of a door installation
I'm half way done. Watched this video which will really help tomorrow. The piece on the top panel had me stumped. I'll drill it like you did. Thank you!
It's so much easier to set your vertical track when you set your bottom section in the jam. That cuts out the step of bending nails over the sections as the tracks just hold them in place.
I DIY one 16' grange door I also had a big box store contractor did another 16' door. What a surprise, the price was the same, my parts was about the same as the out the door price by the contractor. The difference, mine was DIY type door where the torsion springs windup with a drill as a safety precaution, the contractor with the usual windup bars. Both doors were insulated with same R value, same style and steel backing, both with windows, both had existing openers, contractor didn't not charge sales tax. Installation for me was about a full day, going through the instructions and all the little parts, had to load up the new door on my truck from the big box store to my house and dispose the old door. Contractor brought in new door done withing 2 hours and haul away the old door. It was a new fun DIY experience but will have contractor do it from now on if the price the same. Now you know, check first your area may differ.
Thx! We always assume diy saves cash - now we know to ask first, diy later - if necessary!
Good job, the second cable " the safety cable "in case the spring breaks and stabilizes the pully and spring assembly from excessive movement should go thru the small black grommet on the pully attached to the spring, this will keep it from getting caught in the pully and keep the pully from falling or flying off if it ever got loose. This is the cable that is tied on each end.
Good job, liked how you went through every detail!
You did amazing, i enjoyed it. if you do another video i would love to see it in action with the motor. Good job this video helped alot.
good tutorial. Would have been awesome to test it after the springs were installed
Thank you for filming this. Really enjoyed all your craftmenship in putting this together..so helpful.
Nice work! Very helpful
FYI everyone in the comments about having an "impact wrench", that's way more torque than you need. You can chuck in a socket driver into a drill and that's plenty of power. (my drill was too weak. Just to give you a heads up now that I've done it, Clopay makes a pretty good door, but they make it a lot harder with such poor directions. They compile 1 instruction book for 10 models, so you spend most of the time trying to decipher if the directions are for your model. Then when they don't drill the holes for the handles, that drives me up a wall. Or the fact I had to go out and buy the angle iron cutter to take 3 inches off the vertical rails for the low overhead installation. That's asinine. You cut the rails, you drill the holes, there's no excuse for their laziness. Like with the manual it wouldn't take 2 hours for them to go through and create a file for the correct model door, and decent illustrations.
I've never seen it does this way, I guess everyone has their own way.
Very helpful!!!! Thanks
I just installed the same door, couple things you missed. The safety cable should go through the black bushing on the pulley, not sure how important it is but the instructions show it.
Great video boss
Thanks!
Thanks!
Sweet NRS Strap ;)
Good video , hope you have an impact driver by now would speed up the job 🍺
Thanks! An impact driver would definitely be nice for this one!
I'm just going to open mine manually for the time being. The springs were my concern, how to release that tension.
Thanks, great video! When you built the frame for the door, did you make the opening 8'x7' and with that size did it work out perfectly for you?
I made the opening slightly smaller than the dimensions of the door, I believe it was 1/4" smaller from my memory. That way the panels have something to rest against as you construct the garage door panels
Great work. How did you finish off the header so that the 2x10’s and the plywood weren’t exposed?
That's a good question. I did not finish out the inside of this garage/shed and I have seen other garages done with 2x10's in way of the garage door opening unfinished. I would probably have the sheet rock come to the edge of the 2x10s by adding another 2x4 in the wall to attach to. The 2x10s would still be showing, but have a more finished look.
Would you happen to remember how you framed for the garage door? I’m planning on using an 8x7 as well but I’m struggling with how much gap to leave in my framing for the jamb etc thanks, this and the build video helped a lot!
I went in about 1/4" on the edges for the garage door. This allows the door to have something to lean against while it is being assembled. The instructions should call for how the exact dimensions you want to frame the opening. You can add weather stripping/jams later to the opening on the outside.
Can you get away with 2x4 walls?
Thank you Buddy. I am planning to build 10x20 slope roof. How my walls should be tall for this garage door ?
I would just do standard 2x4 height, which is 8 feet + 4.5 inches for sole plate and double top plate. That way no cuts are required.
8 foot is recommended
What is the extra cable for?
You did a very good job, but you need an impact, I understand most people don’t have impacts like that, but good job
I think your problem was that you started with the first panel too low, as the rubber list needs more room anyway, then your support bracket would have ended up higher.
Hello friend, what are the principal garage door suppliers you can recommend on Texas?
Unfortunately I don’t know any garage door suppliers in the area. The door shown in this video is the base model from Home Depot and probably the cheapest DIY option outside of finding a used door from somewhere.
How much time did it take you for the door part (not the framing part)?
Roughly a half day project
I get why you didn’t show you doing the cables… should I say I found out for myself.😂😂
how to contact with you to estimate ?
Can i buy that door?
Is not good mounting the angle iron to the wood directly it should have one going accros. That’s what I learned I know everyone is different
Bro that’s not how you do the lock but good job on the rest of it. There is little punch out tabs on the side of the track knock them out with the claw of your hammer. Mount the latch in that hole screw the the garage door pannle
Thanks Ill check it out!
@@findoutDIY I been doing doors along time I hate extension springs though so thanks for the help
6:53 - Thanks. That's where I was stuck. Did you have any issues with the angle bar, afterwards?
No issues after making the modifications for the angle bar to fit. It has been working fine for about 5 months now. It seems like the hole placement was an oversight on the manufacturer's part for the Basic model
Roflmao the insulated version has same problem. The 28” angle for the reinforcement is super garbage. Directions plainly wrong. They go through all the trouble laying out holes for you, they decided the reinforcement bracket was too confusing for the guys at the plant.
Don’t like that spring system at all.
The door will always lean to one side or the other and balance is horrible! Definitely get spring above the door if you can especially if you’re planning to install an opener.
I agree this spring system is inferior to the one that goes above the door. However, this system does work ok without an automatic opener. In this application I wanted the most economical option, but if I personally planned to live with this for years, I would want the above door spring.
Hey I anodize that metal
This shit looks dumb easy and you can make 100k a year doin git
