Love my 2016 Ecodiesel. 80k miles no worries constantly works hauling forklift sized payloads for work and tows my boat on the weekend amazingly and efficiently. (Low end torque is great for the boat ramp). Glad they’re back and I’ll be getting another.
I drove a 22 bighorn with the ecodiesel. What a pile. Damn thing seemed down right unsafe from a stop. Thing didn't move and then all of a sudden it gave everything it had. If it had better drivability I would have seriously considered it.
Who is waiting to watch a Ram 1500 diesel and a Chevy Silverado 1500 diesel MPG and acceleration? 😁
Not waiting for a Chevy anything with that horrible new look. I can see why their sales are down hard this year and Ram's are up, this ram is beautiful. Coming from a Ford guy
Cant wait until they put that engine in the Gladiator!!!
It it gonna last ? Being a fiat technology diesel with Italian parts not sure bout that 😂
Would like to see them swing open a little wider for loading pallets of seed with a forklift. Could get tight! Would help me though most days. I’m 5’10” and reaching stuff in the bed of my 3500 is a stretch for sure or just have to climb in.
Love the tailgate. Having a Ridgeline for 10 years, and currently owning an F150... I miss the dual action tailgate. Very convenient.
Sure would make climbing in and out of the bed much easier, would you go back to a Ridgeline from an F150?
Probably not going back to the Ridgeline. Although it had a great ride.. I wanted a little more capacity & towing ability. Also, I’m not crazy about the new design.
Unless you are parked on a slant and one door keeps closing.....or if it's windy....or if you're backing up to a trailer with a 5th wheel hitch. Hopefully they put some kind of lock to lock the doors open.
@@thomasrossi31 Thats kool, appreciate the feedback from a true owner not just a Ridgeline hater
No problem. I actually sold the Ridgeline to a friend who still has it, and loves it. My brothers 2008 Ridgeline is just shy of 200k miles. And my friends 2007 just broke 200k. Dependable for sure.
LOVE this truck! Hopefully someday I'll find a nice used one for a good price... :)
...because an Italian diesel has always been the poster child for world-leading reliability and robustness.
Wait.
Maybe not world-leading, for reliability, but Italy is one of the few countries that has been over 50% diesel vehicles for decades. Hopefully by now they know how they are supposed to work.
Italy has a lot of diesels. Way more than the US, so it's a safe assumption that they're reliable.
Great review-- as always- I’m becoming a RAM lover - they definitely have come long way
Make like a RAM and split. Nice that they went with the dual exhaust too.
Let hope Ram fixed the eco Diesel issues over the previous eco diesel. When asked how long will this engine last he said the truck life but he has a worry look in his eyes that said long enough for the warranty to expire. lol
Let's hope one surprise is reliability.
Have they fixed how the sprockets are attached to the camshafts? There wasn't a key to hold the sprocket on just press it on and a bolt. The sprocket comes loose and boom, there goes your engine.
There are some diesel shops that can bullet proof it as long as it's before it let's go, for about 3k, then it's a pretty decent engine.
Love the channel guys, keep it up! Question, will the eco-diesel be offered in the e-torque?
The tailgate is really cool, however, I wonder how it will hold up in heavy duty use such as in my field, the oil patch. Almost every pick up truck in the oil field has a torn up tailgate
I hear ya on that. They rate it as 2,000 lbs, (I think that was the number I read, please correct me if I am wrong). That is one time though, feat that tailgate up in the middle repeatedly and maybe it won’t close so well. Alternately, it may last forever without issue because you will find yourself using it in the new way all the time. I could see me using it as a gateway once I got used to that, instead of a drop down tailgate. Hmmmmmm
What the? What the?? The standard pick up truck tailgate is rated at 300 to 350 pounds. There’s no way that tailgate is rated at 2000 pounds.
Ahh found a link as well with Road and Track reviewing the tailgate. They also say it is rated at 2,000 lbs.
www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a26147245/ram-1500-multifunction-tailgate-pickup-truck/
Stay safe out there.
its optional. If I were buying it as a work truck, no way in hell would I opt for it. but then I would just get an aluminum tray anyway so.
Patrick Rich - wonder how easy they are to steal ! I remember when I insured my 2011 F150 I used to have, I asked why it was so high and the lady said it was because they were a frequent stolen vehicle and due to the ease and number of tailgates stolen with the step. Irony was I didn’t even have the tailgate with the step!! She would not offer a different rate or take it into consideration. Slightly pissed me off. Loved that truck though!
With a year driving my eco diesel 3.0L with 21K kms. So far so powerful no problem at all only oil change Thumbs up FCA
A Rebel diesel is what I would like to replace my Big Horn, but prices are silly so I think I'll wait a bit. Plus I'd like to see if they fixed some of the know issues with the Ecodiesel.
Do you know if 2020 ram rebels will bring new or different color ways?
Any idea if the extended range fuel tank will be an option?
I hope it is more reliable than the last ecodiesel
I still have my 2015 EcoDiesel and it's awesome! 140,000km, tough canadian winters and hot toronto summers, hasn't skipped a beat. All I've ever done is routine maintenance, oil changes etc.
Did I miss it? What kind of transmission options for 2020?
Will there be a regular cab in the new 2019 5gen ?
Did they fix some of the problems such as the exhaust cam gear slippage problem?
all i want to know is, is it slow like the hemi rebel? i drove one of those and was so disappointed i asked to test drive a different one in case there was something wrong with the first one.... it felt like the 3.21 rear axle in the big horn had more giddy up and go when you put your foot on it.
Will they ever change the front axle on these trucks so you can regear the 4x4 models? Was a huge reason why I parted with my Ecodiesel
Trucks cost about $11,000 to produce that's the cost of everything. So they will probably run 60k. I work in this industry and I can honestly say these companys are ripping u off.
Justin Bryant man tell me about it. I want and need a truck so bad bit can't afford one.
There’s more than just raw materials that goes into cost averaging. Wages are a HUGE factor...
can u guys give the numbers with the truck configured, how many people buy a base model 2 wheel drive truck? thx
Does it still have a 70.00 oil filter?
I still didn’t hear the “upgrades” from the old engine. The old one had many problems, and I heard nothing about what improvements were made from the old to the new! Common TFL, your better than that!! Did they fix the camshaft sprocket problem?!?!?
simjet22 Agree, the EcoDiesel in past years had huge problems that Dodge never admitted to. Not so bad when under warranty but know several people that were faced with large repair bills after the warranty was done. Would never buy one until Dodge addresses all the problems.
@@rickgaudreau7111, Ram and Fiat love ignoring know problems. Sprockets, TIPM'S, etc. That why I sold my 2009 Ram 1500 and why I won't buy another Fiat/Chrysler product.
No they didn't fix the sprocket problem because it was never a problem. It was a single youtube bullshit video that went viral. Go ahead and check all the Ecodiesel forums and report back on how many failures came from that. Zero. It is a common design that is proven reliable. You wanna complain about bearings and the EGR, fine, but perpetuating non issues doesn't help anyone.

Interesting numbers. We shall see how it performs...
Can I put a Snowplow on it or does it void the warranty?
Has FCA addressed the issue with the press fit cam gears? I can’t wait to drive one of these...... I knew there was a reason I’ve been dragging my feet on the purchase of a new truck.
Good question. I am curious about that as well as the poor connection with the egr cooler. The Italian guy talks about all the great numbers but nothing about long term durability.

@@DF-et4gs Yeah I heard that and laughed because this is a Chrysler/Fiat product. But what do I know...
Nope still press fit gears, different head gasket thicknesses to compensate for the piston protrusion!
@@jeremyh9515 Seems like it would be such an easy fix, for FCA, at the engine factory...why on Earth, when they know people are concerned about that, would they not fix this issue!?!?!
Currently Ram trucks are the best trucks money can buy.
It would be nice to get the figures from Italy and other areas of Europe where these engines are used in regards to engine reliability.
bray56mj it’s not necessarily comparable considering the type of roads they have and how they use and maintain their vehicles.
In my experience, purely anecdotal of course, Europeans maintain their vehicles according to the recommended schedule. Americans just drive until something breaks then fix that. VW for example is a byword and paragon of reliability in most of Europe, here in the states they’re a punchline for mechanics’ jokes.
Fiat engines are very reliable. I saw plenty of Fiats with rustholes as big as a human head and not a single instrument or light in the dash still working but the engine still sprang to life the moment you turned the key. I am no fan of Fiat and would'nt advice anyone to buy one of their cars but their engine designs are basically bulletproof. It was always the best part of their cars and trucks.
MR Bloom yes they do. It's a variant of VM Motori A 630 DOHC. All diesel Maseratis and the European market grand cherokee use various versions of the A 630 DOHC.
@@blegi1245 yep, and my 2016 Grand Cherokee has already 190,000k and has been bullet proof
Rebel, in 2wd, will tow the most? Why get a rebel in 2wd anyway?
It doesn't weigh as much as the 4wd so the gross towing weight is higher even though the gross vehicle weight is the same
paul mcelligott There is no 2wd Rebel. Roman was referring to a regular 2wd Ram single cab. He just didn’t specifically mention that in the details.
The last ecodiesel suffered from twisting the driveline sproket off. I hope that they have addressed this issue in the new configuration.
I still want one in the rebel platform.
Please tell me the 2020 rebel will have the Harmon kardon stereo
Had a Duramax and now a Cummins in my Ram HD. I might go for the Rebel with the Eco Diesel for my daily driver. I love the torque, great for towing. Great job FCA. The RAM brand is great.
The Ram brand was gear but these ecodiesels are killing it. FCA doesn't care a bit about their customers!
I love the tailgate waiting on the gate to come out to get my laramie longhorn with it.
If just 6 speed manual was available 👌
I want that tailgate! And engine! The whole truck actually...
Is it out in the market now in Canada?
Exhaust brake?
WILL IT LAST LIKE THE FORD IHC 420 IDI i doubt it
Will this fit the Grand Cherokee and JL???
Did they fix cam gear slipping problem with the new gen 3.0 ? Old one just had pressed gears on cams and would slip around 100k and destroy itself,, just wondering if the put a keeper pin on the cam gears to prevent this from happening.
The cam gear issues was more of a fake issue, yes a few had that problem but most eco diesels failed cus the crank bearings oiling ports were drilled wrong and sized or snapped the crank cus of oil starvation.
That was on extremely early-build Ecos and extremely limited in numbers.
Italian reliability? What could go wrong?
hey 'murica boy,
first of all every GM diesel engine (also the duramax) is designed here in Italy , near Torino. we know how to do diesels, we invented the common rail in Messina and Fiat was the first to use it!
second of all, we in Italy have more than 50% of the car on the roads powered by diesel.
third, there are thousand fiat with the little 1.3 liter diesel with well over 300 000 miles, and here oil changes are every 40 000km (25 000 miles), and no, we do not drive like a sissy on highways, speed limit here is 135km/h -> 80mph, but most people drive at 90-95mph.
so, you can say that we are not precise as japanese but we know how to build a diesel really well. enjoy your diesel ride!
GC by no means am I a "murica boy" I've only owned Japanese cars since American cars can't even last a lease term without being in the shop. I'm glad your Italian sausages work for you across the pond. But no one is talking about your place, this channel is based in the US. Italian reliability is trash here in the states.
@@tube_steak really, cause my 2016 Eco Diesel Grand Cherokee has already 190,000k and the engine has been bulletproof. But what do I know with direct experience compared to a know it all internet basement dweller.
Good they went with timing chain versus belt in new ecodiesel. I almost purchased the rebel with Hemi. I’m going to wait until this is available.
Did they address the camshaft problems?
Wonder if they did anything with the excessive soot build-up in the intake manifold that happens with the EGR system.
With "average" consumer use, what would TFL estimate the mileage life of this Ecodiesel?
Were those towing mirrors on the rebel or not?
I saw test mule in the wild last week in Wheatridge Colorado! The green sticker above the fuel door gave it away.
Can you please ask about the 8 foot bed with ram boxes I would like one for when I pull my fifth wheel. Thanks
5th wheel on a 1500? Can be done. But it shouldn't. It's way more than just capacities. Frame strength, brakes, bearings, tires and wheels, etc...just not worth it unless you burn through your trucks every 3 years for a fresh horse.
rsg1963 I must of forgot that it is a 2500 or 3500 I need but I really want an 8 foot bed with ram boxes
@@TheDefenderSisu Gotcha. Yeah the Ram Boxes are just sweet and I like the improvements they made to the originals.
I wish you would have focused on the limited rather than the Rebel. I'm going to order an eco in either the limited, long horn or optioned up Laramie from Johnson auto plaza as some as they are available to order. I had a 2014 eco & loved it overall, but always had it in the back of my mind for if & when the engine was going to blow due to the bottom end problems with the early eco's. What I want to know from one of these engineers is what specifically did they re-engineer in the bottom end to make sure this new version isn't going to possibly be a may-pop motor. I also want to know what the fuel mileage numbers are, will it have start stop technology "I hope not" will it have exhaust braking, what have they done to eliminate the dead petal turbo lag on take off. On my '14 I had to do a GDE tune to make it more in town drivable and with that also got exhaust braking. I hope Ram has this standard on the new version.
Is it the new ZF 8-speed with a torque converter?
Same old Pressed on Cam Gears that loosen?
Same old oil/trans cooler nightmare system?
As a prospective Rebel buyer, the one thing I thought was odd was the lack of the tech package with radar cruise that comes in most other RAM trims including some below the Rebel. I understand that it’s the off-road version but fully optioned its similar price as the top trims but with some options notably missing.
Did you see that the Adaptive Cruise control buttons on the steering wheel of the 2020 Rebel? It appears that the option is coming in 2020.

Did anybody notice the Adaptive Cruise control on the Rebel Steering wheel? It looks like that feature is coming in 2020 for the RAM Rebel.
Did they fix the camshaft sprocket issue?
ellomirza i qas wondering just that . If it’s not fixed they did nothing by upgrading the torque and hp. Now if it’s fixed this little monster is pretty much bulletproof
Yeah, I know 4 coworkers that bought them and none of them made it to 100k. 3 was cam gear, one stayed in the shop majority of its life.
Factory twin turbo would be a game changer. My 17 ecodiesel has just a bit of turbo lag if everything spools down at a stop light. Easy to predict but having instant hemi-like acceleration when you need it off the line would be ideal. For some reason I think this motor is in a Massarrati so it’s probably possible.
Black it out, 6 inch lift, A.D.D black roll bar and a set of black rhino rims... awesome.
Did you happen to notice if there was an exhaust brake?
Milo White I doubt you get an exhaust brake in that platform but it would be nice to have

I hope to god someday they make a powerwagon diesel
With those kind of power numbers maybe they will use the eco diesel in more trucks. Be cool to have it as option in powerwagon and 2500s if u didnt need the big cummins.
Love my PW. Would love to see a less thirsty option! Or just F'n Hellcat it. 😆
You will probably get your wish. I have to believe when Ram caught wind of the Tremor and it's offerings, discussions began to get real series on getting the Big C on the side. Probably by 2021 I'm thinking. Maybe even later half of 2020 model year.
Ram better not put ecodiesel up against a full on 6.7 Powerstoke...
With that said, it's not gonna be easy for Ram. Ford is moving the sweet spot between soft off road suspension like the Ram, to a little more rigid, and holding high tow numbers.
That softer suspension is the problem with much heavier engine, also the winch takes up space the intercooler needs on the current Cummins.
Either way, after the Tremor launches... The 6.4 Hemi is gonna be a dog. It's no competitier to a big block 7.3 Godzilla, nor a 6 7 Powerstoke.
A diesel is too heavy and would make it nose dive in holes. Also, there would be turbo lag and no place for the winch as the diesel intercoolers would take up the winch space. The 6.4 Hemi has tons of power and torque in the Power Wagon.
Will the 2020 Ram Rebel have ventilated seats as an option?
@@technom3598 its not, I checked. The 12 comes with heated leather seats, but not ventilated.

The biggest question I have is have they fixed the extremely weak cam sprocket keyway that grenades the valvetrain at about 150k miles?
@@kevinbock6096 yes I realize that now, my past my passat v6 has the same set up, but it's a light duty gas engine. The no keyway must be a European way , but obviously it should be changed, especially on diesel engines where the compression and vibrations are higher. I know they all test their engines extensively and no doubt they are aware of it, but chose to not fix it since the warranty has expired when it fails.

Deleting costs MUST be factored in the MSRP...I guess.😳
It's mind-blowing what 20 years of technology and engineering movements have brought us.
To put things into perspective a 2001 Ford f350 7.3 powerstroke engine the t444e international has roughly the same specs as this 3.0 liter engine and others from different manufacturers wth the same displacement.
Fortunately for us we get better fuel economy now then with the 7.3.
Hats off to the engineers.
It’s via turbo charging. If you double the atmospheric pressure via boost in a 3.0 liter, you can get the same output as a 6.0 liter. Reliability is not yet known.
This truck will be in the scrap yard before a 7.3 needs a rebuild tho. All these light duty diesels have no reliability.
