    Annoying that antenna ads tout ranges in miles, some as high as 990 miles. They also claim HD as you mentioned, and 1080i or possibly 4K, that have nothing to do with the antenna itself. Its still a radio signal at the antenna. In the olden days they advertised 'made for color TV'. It seems the antenna industry is pretty corrupt. I wish there was a way get them to show beamwidth, dB gain vs frequency, and such. Glad you folks are educating the public.

    Our market has 1 high VHF channel and the rest are UHF. I tried everything at my fringe location.
    Surprisingly the RCA 751 (now 752) on the box. Worked far better than anything! Adding the preamp gained 14 more channels. I’m glad there are no low VHF channels here. RCA makes a few monster antenna’s with low VHF.

      The Stellar Labs high gain VHF one, which he reviewed recently is amazing. It even picked up my uhf stations at 30 percent on my porch not on my roof! One VHF station, I relate. If your rig fails, check out the Stellar Labs rig.

    I live in Northwest Indiana right between the Chicago and South Bend Market. I put up a Wineguard 360 degree omnidirectional amplified antenna and picked up 75 channels, everything that I would expect to receive I got in. In December WBBM (CBS2 Chicago) which is channel 2.1 and broadcasts off real channel 12, a high VHF signal and I quit picking it up no matter how many times I scanned. I bought a VHF retrofit antenna om Amazon from Antenna Direct and all I did was zip tie it to the mast beneath the Wineguard antenna and did not even hook up any coaxial to the VHF retrofit antenna and went in and scanned the TV and I started picking up CBS2 Chicago and it's two sub channels again, it really blew my mind that it came in without hooking up any coaxial. So you are right if your antenna is only setup to receive UHF stations you won't pick up the lower band stations unless you have that long element present on your antenna. You also right that you will never pick anything up from over 80 miles away unless your antenna is up on a high tower. Thanks for the information.

    I'm from Australia. Surprised to hear there are still VHF Low frequencies in the all digital TV era in the US. Back in the day we had Analogue channels broadcasting on VHF low Channels 0-5 which saw some massive antennas in Fringe reception areas. It was really only channels 0-2 that required the really long elements, though. As FM radio expanded, channels 3, 4 & 5 were dropped as their sound frequency crossed the FM Band. Now, with all digital, there are no UHF stations below channel 6 and most regional areas are all UHF.

    I have a VHF/UHF antenna in my attic. It has two baluns and a pre-amp VHF/UHF combiner with separate gains for VHF and UHF. I found I needed no extra gain for VHF but needed maximum gain for the UHF. I paid $46.00 the antenna a year ago, but the same antenna is now priced at $99.00.
    I get 42 channels on my new antenna. The original large triangle shaped roof mounted antenna only picked up 14 channels. It was an old Channel Master installed on a tall pole at the peak of my roof back in 1983. It had guy wires tied off on four corners to support it in high winds. I am surprised it was never struck by lightning. I imagine being exposed to weather for that many years caused some losses in continuity on some of the elements.
    The roofers removed the old antenna two years ago to put a new roof on the house. They wanted a hundred dollars to put it back up. I sold it for the aluminum at the recycling center.
    My house is 1200 feet above sea level, and I have clear line of site to the stations, even from my attic. Going up on the roof would give me another five feet. There are no taller mountains between my house and the television station towers. The towers are around 14 up to 60 miles away from me, in opposing directions.
    How much distance am I giving up by leaving the antenna inside the attic? Is that amplifier making up for the loss? If I run RG-6 instead of using the original RG-59 installed back in 1983, would I see any substantial benefit?
    My new antenna is a lot smaller. I could easily attach it to roof mounted pole where my satellite dish is, by removing the dish. I quit using the dish a year ago. DirectTV was charging me $127.00 per month. So I have saved quite a bit. I already had internet. We stream TV as well as watch over the air broadcasts channels. Some of broadcast channels are HD and look better than streamed channels. Streaming is compressed and decompressed I think. The problem with doing that is the pre-amp? I can't use the pre-amp outdoors. It requires 120 volts and is not waterproof. It is supposed to be mounted close to the antenna.
    If I use a passive VHF/UHF combiner like the Channel Master at the antenna and then use an inline amplifier behind the TV set, the loss in the cable will be substantial. That Satellite RG-6 cable run is sixty feet. It is on the highest point of the roof on the north end of the house. My one TV is on the south end of the house.
    I know this is long and probably detailed too much, but other people might have a similar situation. Trying to decide whether or not moving the antenna to the roof would be worth it. I don't want to have to make too many trips up onto that roof peak. It is thirty feet from the ground. I have a fear of heights so when I am up there, it gets pretty tense. I can do it, but taking all the right gear up the first time would be ideal. Coming down is harder than going up for me.
    Any advice would be appreciated, if you have the time. If not, I understand. You can't take time to answer everyone's questions. Thank you for your UA-cam channel. You explain things really well. I'll keep watching either way.

      I'm sure he will respond, but I'll input a few things while you wait. A rooftop antenna will always have better reception than an attic install. Roof materials such as type of roof - metal/shingles/tile are going to interfer with a signal. It's just a matter of how much. Coax is another area. Rg6 is better than rg59, and rg11 is better than any other. However, its cost prohibitive for about 99.9% of most home installs. Since most likely you will be using rg6, make sure you buy the right kind. Quad shield solid copper core is the best that will block the most interference and have the lowest db loss. Most big box store coax is dual shield aluminum/steel copper clad coax. Unless you are a pro that buys 1000' rolls at a time from your distributor, search on ebay for a bulk seller that sells coax by the foot. There are several that give you more cable at a lower cost than your local retailer and ship for free. Also, you CAN reuse the cable coming from the dish as its going to be Rg6 rated at 3GHZ. You said your amp cannot be used outdoors. Which one is it? There are great outdoor amps out there and even better ones if you know where to look

      album183 , thank you for your help on explaining the RG-6 type to get.

    • @album183
      @album183 5 років тому +1

      @@jacklabloom635 In your case I would re-use the cable from the dish as it should already be solid copper core. Why are you wanting to move the antenna outside? If your attic mount works and does what you need then there is no need to go to that extreme since you stated you don't do heights well. Also, if you do go outdoors, replace the amp with a dual input pre-amp with separate UHF/VHF inputs and eliminate the need to combine prior to the amp, plus it eliminates the minimal dbs loss associated with another needless connection point.

      @@jacklabloom635 Hi Jack, after reading album183 I too decided to give you some advice on your install based on my experience and installation:
      1. I have a Televes DATBOSS UHF antenna with an integral amplifier. If you want to receive both VHF and UHF channels, you need a mix VHF/UHF antenna. You are better off with a directional antenna if your TV towers are more than 20 miles away. Avoid an omnidirectional antenna if you are far away from a TV tower, especially in a fringe area.
      2. I DO NOT use antennas with baluns. Their leads will break and corrode in time causing a lot of signal attenuation. High winds will also beat on them.
      3. My antenna in on the roof of a second floor, 12 meters (40 ft) above ground level. The key is to stay away from obstacles as much as you can.
      4. I use a telescopic mast of 5.5 meters (18 ft) with four guy wires.
      5. I only have two TVs connected to my antenna; the fewer, the better.
      6. I use RG11 solid copper (not CCS) coax cable between my antenna and the point of connection/distribution to the house.
      7. I use the existing RG6 coax cable in the house for distribution.
      8. I don't use any splitters. My antenna comes with a power source which also works as distribution amplifier with two RF connectors.
      9. If you place your antenna in your attic, you will loose about 3 db in antenna gain. That's about a 50% signal loss if you have a shingles roof.
      10. My house is in a valley with foothills about 1,000 feet away. I have no line of sight with the TV towers.
      11. All my TV towers are on the same location on a volcano 3,400 meters (11, 155 ft) above sea level.
      12. As an installer I used a field signal meter to align my antenna. This is the best way to fine tune your antenna with your TV broadcast towers.
      Well, I hope this helps on your OTA TV antenna installation.

    Hey Tyler, another good video thanks.
    There are more types of TV antennas than those mentioned in your video. You also have the omnidirectional antenna that allows you to pick up signals 360 degrees around. These are mix VHF/UHF, low gain antennas. Most have an internal amplifier included.
    You also have passive and active TV antennas. The difference is that active antennas have a dipole that receives DC power to amplify the signals received. An example of this type of antenna is the Televes DATBOSS Mix UHF VHF Amplified Outdoor antenna.
    Cheers,

    I'm about 30 miles from phila, (335 deg. to the towers). Just to test the OTA waters and to hopefully cut the cord I set up Clear Stream single "8" on a 25' pole at the gazebo in my back yard. I am in Menasha WI. Use a Clearstream 2V and needed to add VHF horizontal element to pick up Fox Green Bay which broadcast at 11.1 which is what they also list as. The rest of the 21 I can get without VHF. I have the Clearstream indoors about 3 feet of the floor (at about 265 ft above sea level). I would like to get the Antop 400-BV or the new Clearstream 2Max for easier to use indoors and look better too. Would be great to see a video on those.

      @AntennaMan  5 років тому

      The antennas that look better tend not to perform as well. The 2V has reflectors to increase weak signals while the other two you listed don't. I'd say if it ain't broken don't fix it.

    Hi Tyler. I live in the Cincinnati Metro area in Covington, KY. My problem is I live in an apartment (5th floor) and cannot mount anything outside. My rooms are such that my outside wall faces in the exact opposite direction to mount the antenna on a window so an interior wall is my best option to achieve the proper direction. I've tried the cheaper indoor antennas without a lot of luck. I'm hoping you can come up with a recommendation for me. Thanks in advance.

    I live in Westville, Illinois...this is obviously not an easy area to receive TV stations due to stations being at widely varying distances from where I live (anywhere from 15 miles away for an ABC affiliate and over 60 miles away for a CW affiliate), me living in a fringe area of two different TV markets (Champaign-Decatur, IL, which is my home TV market, and Terre Haute, IN, which is a neighboring TV market) and not all stations transmit from the same direction (many, but not all, of the Champaign-Decatur signals transmit from the west of me; I believe the Fox affiliate for my area transmits from the northwest of me unless that has changed due to the repack, PBS affiliate WEIU, if that station still transmits an over-the-air signal at all, transmits from the southwest of me, and the Terre Haute signals transmit from the south-southeast of me). I'm not sure if there's an antenna model that would allow me to receive a full-slate of local channels (I consider a full slate to be receiving at least one affiliate each of CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, CW, MyNetworkTV, and PBS) where I live. I mention the Terre Haute signals on here because, when my dad had an omnidirectional attic antenna during the 2012 Summer Olympics (my dad threw the antenna away after the antenna's preamp failed), my dad received the NBC affiliate from Terre Haute, IN (WTWO), but not the CBS affiliate in Champaign, IL (WCIA), even though WCIA is a closer signal to us than WTWO.
    Also, I should note that the AT&T local channel connector (which is designed to connect into a DirecTV Genie DVR) that has been provided to some people who have lost stations (in my area, these are the in-market CBS, MyNetworkTV, Fox, and CW stations) due to retransmission consent disputes does not work well at all...connecting it into our DirecTV Genie DVR got us no stations at all, while connecting the antenna part of the local channel connector directly into my dad's TV via coax got all four subchannels of one station (WICD, the closest full-power signal to where I live, about 15 miles or so away), but nothing else.

    I have to change my antenna, but cannot decide what to get. My zip is 60056 and I'd like to get a good antenna to replace the one that the wind has damaged. Although, the larger extensions have blown away the smaller system seems to give me all the channels, but the picture flickers every so often. I have a wired extended antenna similar to your picture behind you but I've noticed this but I'm not sure how good it is or if it will need an attached amplifier which I do not want to use and have not been. My channels presently go up to 66.5, but I'm not sure if I can get a better antenna for more. My present antenna is over 20 years old and I really don't know if there are new designs that are better. It is really a dilemma noticing all the different designs. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I settled on an in between position but I think with cloud or snow cover I may lose all. The most confusing part of this is my strongest ch.fox physical ch 24 and weakest is ABC phys ch 22.. shouldn’t these be equal being in the same UHF neighborhood? I’m in 60110 Chicago area. Single tv 30’ coax. Would a preamp help. Thank you for your channel. Very helpful!

    Antenna man, --- we need an antenna recommendation... We live in north Stillwater, Oklahoma (74075) and most stations are out of the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma market, 44 miles away according to fcc.gov. We get most stations on that pancake antenna in the attic except KOCO 5(7) and KETA 13(13), h-VHF. We had a $300 Yagi(antenna master on the roof) until weather finished it off. The attic pancake will get KOCO 5 in some seasons of the year and KETA 13. Right now 5 is okay but 13 has disappeared. We believe we will need to have a h-VHF and UHF antenna that is motor mounted since 5 is one degree off of the rest at 211 degrees; and we can turn the antenna by hand to correct for these seasonal drops in channel. What antenna do you recommend and do we need motorized? Is a yagi what we should have in h-VHF and UHF?

      I can't speak for the antenna from experience but just by looking at it I'd say it won't do the best job in a rural or weak signal area. It would probably work 30/40 miles fro the broadcast tower but anything beyond that is pushing that. I always try to recommend a larger antenna because even if that antenna brings in some channels you may experience drop outs during bad weather.

      You don't need an omni antenna since all of your stations come from one direction. They are weaker so an omni may not reliably pick them up. I'd recommend this ClearStream model pointed north. amzn.to/2HngYVE

    If I have two antennas VHF and one UHF where should I install my preamplifier on one of the antennas or after the combiner

      If you get a RCA TVPRAMP1R Preamplifier or RCA TVPRAMP1Z Preamplifier there is a separate connection for a UHF and VHF antenna and the amp then combines the signals into one to go to your TV.

    Great videos! My address is 100 Locket Lane, Flag Pond, TN. Unless they've changed, we have VHF low, VHF high, and UHF channels in my area. I live on a fringe of these stations at about 50+ miles. I'm using triband antennas and cheap amplifiers. The stations are beginning to drop in and out now that leaves are on the trees. I also love in a mountainous area. My antennas are about 40 years + old and need replacing. What do you recommend for an antenna and amplifier? Again, I enjoy your videos. Thanks!

    Hi Tyler great videos very informative. I am in the NE Philly area 19115 what antenna would you recommend for an attic mount.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  4 роки тому

      I service the Philadelphia region. For that reason I offer custom antenna recommendations for $30 as I am providing information that potentially turns down a $400 job. Most antennas do not have the capability to pick up low band channels in Philadelphia including 6ABC, Me-TV 2, and WACP 4.

    Hello, I appreciate your channel. As I prepare to cut the cord I want to make sure I get it right. I am not sure what antenna makes the most sense for me. An outdoor one or one placed in the attic. My zipcode is 60521. The antennaWeb.org site shows only one channel in green with most other classified as red and blue. Can you please advise what type of antenna you would recommend? Also, I have 3 TV's (getting a fourth is a possibility) and I am wondering if you have a specific recommendation for a certain type of Distribution Amplifier? Last question, when installing does the antenna need to be positioned in a particular direction?

    When I first put my antenna I was getting most channels but now I’m mainly getting uhf what is a decent antenna that’s not too large for both vhf and uhf I’m trying to get local news it’s on channel 5 in my area

    I live in newark nj! i have 2 mohu leaf antennas that works ok, but i want to completely cut the cord, abc 7 an up as you said i definitely dont get,spot on! I pay for cable cause espn is the only channel i care for but i have yet to see any videos from you explaining how to also cut the Internet cord from the same cable companies that offer tv services? I need an option for a basement apartment????

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 років тому

      Unfortunately there are not many options to completely cut the cord if you only have one cable company in your area that supplies your internet. Most times if you drop the cable package and just keep internet it is cheaper. Look into ESPN Plus

    I live in the Philly area (about 14 miles from broadcast antennas). Was thinking of getting a Televes DATBOSS LR antenna, since I understand we have Lo & Hi VHF and UHF channels. Is this antenna overkill? Any suggestions.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 років тому

      That antenna does not have any low VHF elements so it wont pick up ABC reliably. You can try this model but I get calls every week about issues picking up 6. You need a portable tuner to calibrate the antenna to pick it up. If you have any problems visit my website but here's the antenna model. amzn.to/2YKiEyM
