    I am so like Nina. I gave up everything for what I thought was right. I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and there was no one there but Jesus. My parents had died, my husband died and my children had there own lives. I ended up broke eating at the food pantry. All thoes people I'd helped over the years. I was beyond hurt. Her people came to help her because they knew she could make money again. Everyone thought I was going to die. Well chile (as Ashley would say) Cancer in remission and I started a business. Won't He do it. Yes He will. Thank you Ashley for your wonderful stories.

      No one picked Zoe. Zoe picked herself. Zoe bought the rights to Nina's story. That's how it works. So, whoever buys the rights to that person's story can basically do what they want with it. Zoe bought the rights so she could control the film and play Nina herself.
      She later admitted she messed up by playing Nina herself. She said she loved Nina Simone so much and wanted to get her story out there. She said in the United States, Nina was not as well-known because of her politics and involvement in the civil rights movement. Nina was blackballed in the US which is why she moved to Europe in the first place.
      They loved her in Europe. They kind of hated her in the US. So, Zoe wanted Nina's name out there to educate people in the US. It was admirable...but she still shouldn't have taken on the lead role.
      By the way, it's true. Zoe is right that in the US Nina was mostly hated. That's a fact. There were black people who liked her, but the white people hated her. She couldn't make a proper living here because of the way things were during the Civil Rights Movement. Nina was too outspoken. That's why she left the US. By the time Nina left the US for Europe, several black entertainers had started to leave because they were tired of the mistreatment. Honestly, black entertainers had been leaving the US for Europe since the 1920s (remember Josephine Baker...same story).

    Nina's issues probably come from all of the brain injuries sustained by the beatings given by her husband. Year after year beatings to her head can explain all of her conditions. It's so sad, that her abuse was then transferred and taken out on her daughter.

    Ms. Simone suffered from BPD - Borderline Personality Disorder. Behavior signs are: anti-social, compulsiveness, hostility, impulsiveness, risk taking, self destruction, social isolation and lack of restraint. I mean the fact that he literally raped her should have been the end of the relationship. To me, I think that’s being overlooked how traumatic it was that she was raped by her husband. This incident was no doubt to me was the peak, the straw that broke the camel’s back where she really unleashed her anger.

    • @carlab30
      @carlab30 3 роки тому +17

      That’s what I was thinking that she showed signs of BPD. This comes from years of severe abuse. Which in the case of her husband abusing her, she probably felt trapped and kept holding it in until she snapped. This comes after years of narcissistic abuse. I had to realize I was suffering with it and now trying to heal myself from it. The mind is tormented, that’s why she had a psychotic break.

I let people know ahead of time.. It's so hard to explain to extroverts. My boyfriend is extroverted and sometimes we clash because he take it as I'm up to something or being sneaky. I'm too honest for that crap. I just want to be left alone when I ask. Everything's all good when you're doing what they want UNTIL you say NO or I need a break.

    This is probably selfish on my part, but I am very grateful that Nina Simone did not become just a 'pop' singer. We have plenty enough of those. Do we really need another finger-popping, generic love song? What she did was extraordinarily unique, and those songs of defiance and power were and are a gift to the world. I'm sorry that she suffered so badly. But I am thankful that she left a catalog that is unlike any other, and is still empowering and uplifting the people to this day.

    In Europe Nina Simone is legendary as a jazz singer. From Germany to France much in the same way as Miles Davis. In her autobiography she told her story and it is a good read. I had the privilege of seeing Ms. Simone in 2001 at The Chicago Theatre, a magical night. Although she had to be helped to the piano, magic started once her fingers hit those keys and her voice touched that mic. When the concert ended, we waited on the side of the building for a glimpse of her. When she came out flanked on each side we started shouting Nina Nina and she stopped turned and waved to us! Tears here. It was so beautiful. The Chicago Tribune Tribune wrote of her concert that it was "proud defiant angry and unapologetically political" "Fiery Nina Simone's Sermon Brims With Feeling and Ferociousness". A wonderful memory. Oh and personally I believe she was coerced into selling the rights to I Loves You Porgy" definitely! (Emphasis added). Periodt.

    The crazy thing was...for someone who battled colorism as much as she battled racism, it is rumored that Nina was colorist herself. She was allegedly critical of her daughter Simone's skin tone. It probably explained why she treated her so terribly. Then again, maybe not. You will find alot of the older generations act out the self hate that had been inflicted upon them by their elders.

      That was unfortunately intentional (if you are from the US). I'm from the US and didn't grow up knowing about her either. I later found out why. Nina was blackballed back in the day because of her being so outspoken and an advocate for civil rights. She was treated badly here so she left for Europe. If you to Europe...the loved her. They still play her music. They all knew who she was. Here in the US...she was pretty much hated (by white people). So they turned on her. So that's why later generations didn't get to know who she was. She was kind of a nobody here in the US (if you were born after the 1960s).

    The estate mess! Nina apparently knew EXCACTLY what she was doing in leaving her estate in the hands of friend Miriam Makeba instead of her daughter. She wanted promises fulfilled in Africa and not squandered, which she felt her daughter would likely do. She was right all along! Makeba wanting to "do the right thing" ( bad optics not living the daughter something) it seems failed Nina's wishes by overriding her friend's intent.

    #SaySoSquad! I tuned in with some homemade vegetable soup for this video on Ms. Nina Simone. I was shocked to know that she was North Carolina. Tryon is about 3 hours away from my hometown. I remember that fiasco when her granddaughter wrote on Twitter about her estate. It wasn't until someone on Twitter actually found the case records and revealed that Lisa didn't tell her daughter the truth. Nina left Lisa her condominium in Los Angeles, one of Nina's brothers got her house in France. The money that Nina left was not for Lisa to spend. Kamala Harris did Lisa a favor because she could have went to prison. Lisa agreed to resigned as the administrator of her mother's estate to avoid going to prison and that's what she didn't tell her daughter. Maybe Lisa took the money because she felt entitled to it from having to deal with her mother's abuse and mental illness.

    Great story! I never knew much about Nina Simone, except I know she's very talented, and has a huge fan base. I really wish that they would have picked India Ari to play her in the biopic, because India Arie is actually inspired by Nina Simone (a lot of people don't even know that) but just like Hollywood; they would rather cast Zoe Saldana, who has nothing in common with Nina Simone, not to mention she considers herself "Latina" which is totally fine, but I don't understand why they continue to give her roles, that they should give to a BW (who can identify with the character in the role). More power to these, dark skinned women, who consider themselves "Latina" my point is if they don't identify with being a sista, let them play the roles in which they can identify with, but they can't, because those roles go to JLo, Gina Rodriguez, Eva Mendes, Salma Hayek...lighter skin/straight hair "Latinas"

      🤷🏽‍♂️ This! I don’t get why black ppl worldwide don’t wake up to the fact that it is not even a good idea to attach the colonial labeling to themselves. At the end of the day you are “black “ . Nina was a fighter. It was a disgrace for that shapeshifter to play Nina. “Latinas” aren’t even considered “real white” because that’s the term the European counterparts coined for basically ALL the half white bastard children the conquistadors populated South American Countries with ! Hence the whole ignoring their status as “real whites” . They feel so glad when they are finally acknowledged by their masters.

    • @sugalovely1238
      @sugalovely1238 9 місяців тому +1

      "Latina" is an ethnicity, like Irish or Indian...it's not a race! One can be Black & Latina at the same time...

    • @jubernardi23
      @jubernardi23 3 місяці тому

      @@sugalovely1238No it is not like that, darling
      It is also a race or genetic because Latinos are mix race people with natives Amerindian’s and Iberian Europeans e even the blacs are mix, it is very different than being only blac, you can see they don’t look Afrcans or even blac mericans even though the blacs Americans is also different from the Afrcans. We Latinos/ Iberians Amercans are connect by ra-ce/ genetics, lineage, culture and civilization
      The term ethnicity refers to a people or nation and has its origin in the Greek ethnikos, an adjective of ethos. More specifically, the concept of ethnicity concerns a group of people with common origins, interests, history and experiences and among which there are levels of solidarity and identification. Often these groups share the same language and the same culture, which distinguishes them from other ethnic groups with which they live, but other times the difference is not in the language, which is the same and are also connected by the genetics and lineage.
      As exemplo Zoe is brown skin more light but she clearly is mix race and very mix, she does not look like Nina and belong to another ethnicity and should rot play Nina role
      😊

    Ashley mentions in her post video 1:00:11 "that every time she saw Aretha Franklin...on television that she (Nina) would get so angry...I should have just been like them, they didn't fight, they didn't do anything."
    (1) Well to add insult to injury "To Be Young, Gifted, And Black" was written by Nina. Nina was nominated for a Grammy but didn't win it for the song. A couple of years later Aretha does a cover, and guess what? Nina probably watches on TV as Aretha gracefully goes on stage with a big grin to get her Grammy for... yep, "To Be Young, Gifted, And Black." Ouch! Ouch! Based on what Ashley said above you think maybe Nina went berserk that night? Ha, ha! :>)
    (2) For old school folks here, Eric Burdon & the Animals high charted in North America and Great Britain with the song "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." It came right after their "House of the Rising Sun." Many think the Animals' version of PDLMBM is the original, it is not. Theirs is the cover, Nina's version (though she didn't write it) is THE ORIGINAL. Lee Rawls did a fine cover version also.
