  • I discuss my bonsai inventory, and analyze my bonsai collection to determine what kinds of trees I value the most, and what kinds of trees I value the least. I answer the question: Do I place higher value trees that I've paid more for? The answer surprised me.

    Very very interesting!! Lots to think about. I am just starting in bonsai, I have maybe...16 trees, and most are ones I dug up from my yard or I am trying to root cuttings from. I am 61 years old this year so I don't have 30 years to grow stuff in the ground. So my thoughts are shifting to buying only a few trees a year, but buying older ones which will of course, cost more. I am not tech saavy but maybe I can get my husband to help me start a spread sheet.

      Sounds like a good plan, starting with older material is a great way to get results faster. I love how there are a lot of ways to do bonsai, as varied as are people.

      Hi Dave! Thanks for the comment, good to hear from you (I'm a fan of yours). It was indeed a fun year for me - I was very excited about bonsai. Since then I've tried to exercise more control in acquiring new plants...

      @DavesBonsai Yeah, I haven't quite mastered the skill of not buying too many plants, but I'm improving.

    ❤❤❤thank you! You are young… recommend saving $1K to $2k and buying an stablished old bonsai. My wife surprised me with one of those … 10 year later you will will be surprised how amazing it looks 😅🎉

      Thanks for watching. And thanks for the advice. Yes, my plan going forward (just a plan, could change) is to buy fewer, but perhaps more expensive/developed trees.
      But we'll see - I do enjoy the process of taking nursery stock and making it into something 'resembling' a bonsai (I acknowledge my trees aren't top quality; however, they do bring me joy, which is my definition of success). Still, thank you for the suggestion, I go back and forth about my next acquisition, but that's part of the fun, shopping around.
      I'm also considering looking for more yamadori, which I have close access to. I've now kept several yamadori (the loosest definition of the word, simply trees I collected in my local forest) alive for a few years now, and might go after some more of those.

    My downward trending acquisition histogram is similar to yours. Rather than making retail purchases over the last two years, however, I started taking trips to the mountains with permits and a shovel in hand. There are of course costs associated with that kind of material acquisition, but my wife now loves the adventure we found in the hobby. I no longer have a need to justify anything to her. She doesn’t mind those expenses now that we are getting soul nurturing sights, fresh air and exercise in the Colorado Rockies. It’s impossible to put a price on that! For me, the key for true happiness in the hobby was to get away from all linear reasoning. For we who are technologically oriented, that is not easily accomplished😊

      @@bradbuss9753 That's great that you've gotten your wife involved, nice work (I can't say the same, although my wife apparently watches all my videos). And a big amen to the rejuvenating experience of going to the mountains! Sometimes I wonder why I continue with nursery material, when I have great access to old trees (and collecting permits for my closest national forest are free!). So I might be following in your yamadori footsteps in the future...

    Maples are my favorite!! We are lucky to live in growing zones that are able to grow SO many different tree varieties well. Interesting video, friend!! Thanks for sharing. I would be embarrassed if I calculated how much I have invested into my bonsai obsession!😅

      Yes, I love that I can grow JM in this climate. We are indeed lucky.
      Haha, I hear you about not really wanting to confront how much I've spent on bonsai. And when I also add in pots, tools, soil, water, etc... I've spent a fair bit. Plus all the time. But bonsai has brought me a lot of joy. There are much worse vices to have.

    as you grow in the hobby, you'll want to invest in older bigger trees which cost alot, unless you dig up your own. Bonsai is addicting and can be expensive

    • @BonsaiNorthwest
      @BonsaiNorthwest  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I anticipate buying fewer but more expensive trees in the future. I'm already on the look out for my next Japanese Maple. I'm guessing I'll soon surpass my record of spending no more than $100 on a single tree, despite being proud of that fact. I am, however, into smaller trees, so I'm not sure if I'll necessarily move onto buying bigger trees in the future, although it's difficult to anticipate how my tastes might change in coming years.
