    I have been sleeping in a hammock for over 6 months now, it's been one of the best health decisions I've made. I no longer wake up feeling stiff and sore, and sleep way better than I ever have (for years I've had problems sleeping). Rhett is right, you sleep on an angle and your back is pretty straight. It's much better for your back than a mattress since there's no pressure being put on it. I put a fleece blanket under me when it's colder out to keep warm. I got rid of my bed 6 months ago and have absolutely no regrets about that. Hammock is so much more comfortable and takes up way less space anyway!

      What about your partner? Do they also sleep in the same hammock? , a different one , or do they use a bed still? . I really like the idea of sleeping as you do , unfortunately it's not something that my partner (excuse the pun ) is comfortable in wanting to do.

I suggest, also, getting a degree that is general enough, so you can spread out in your field of interest with that degree.

    I left my country to pursue what I thought was my dream.
    I went to college to study Bioscience. I studied that for 2 years. Eventually i went through a breakdown, not necessarily because of the pressure or the stress of college, but because I realised that I was unhappy, and I didn't enjoy what I thought I loved when I was 17-18.
    Now I am 23. Do I know what I want? No.
    However, I now know something that I couldn't understand before. College is about growing up, becoming an adult, figuring out what you actually like, because not everything is how it seems. My mental breakdown didn't happen because of college, it happened because I couldn't admit to myself that I was unhappy.
    At 23, and after a year off college and working, I started college once again, even though I had the opportunity to start a career in something else, without a college degree. I feel like a degree is optional but also a good security for anyone plus it gives you a social status.
    Did I make the right decision? I'll probably never now.
    However, surprisingly I feel much better. I don't know if I will pick it up as a career or not, but either way, I am happier.
    College is a mess. Life is a mess. But i guess you can only learn from the chaos and not the order.
    I don't even know if any of my rambling makes sense.... I'll stop now...

    Twenty years ago I could have used that school talk.
    Regarding the purging... my home is for sale. I started purging last summer in preparation. Offer in the works now so I'll likely be moving within the next two months. I'll purge more as I unpack.
    The OCD in me thrilled at getting old papers, correspondence, bills, etcetera sorted. Had all the old maintenance bills for my first car, 1994 Buick Century. Why?! My grandmother is a hardcore hoarder (like you see on TV with unusable spaces in the house) and my mother is a closet hoarder. I fight the tendency hard despite being a collector with many collections. Ie - books, records, rocks/crystals/minerals, etc. I don't keep things if I don't use them and they have no sentimental value.
    I think it's sweet that Rhett has his memorabilia. I knew Link did. I found stuff of my own that I didn't even remember. Gathered it all together. Going to come up with a better system once I move.

    Thing is, Rhett, that Minimalism doesn't necessarily mean you must live in an austere environment, though it can if that's what makes you happy. Many people make that mistake. What it means, is that you fill your home with only things that are 1) Useful 2) Bring you joy 3) Have great sentimental value. Imagine having a home like that. What items would you include?
    It also means having items that are good-quality, and will last for many years. So rather than buying something cheap, and knowing it won't last long but that's OK because it's cheap, you invest in something better (as your budget permits).
    I minimized a few years ago (before Mari Kondo seemed to become the face of Minimalism, and by the way her method is only one of many, and is quite different from what I did for example, so be sure to do what works for you), and what I realized, apart from, "Wholly crap how did I accumulate so much STUFF??!!" is that the stuff I didn't want was *SO MUCH NOISE*. Subconsciously I think I knew it was there, and it was affecting me in various ways. When I finished each room, the calm that I felt was incredible, and that's when I realized the hugely negative affect all that STUFF/NOISE had on me.
    *I don't live an austere existence.* My living room isn't one chair, one small side-table, and one light source, all of which folds up like a Transformer into a tiny cube that I can put on the window-sill when they're not in use. My kitchen isn't one plate, and one spork (because a separate fork and spoon is too much stuff), and no glass because I can drink from the faucet. I have what is useful and what I love, and it includes a few things which have no purpose beyond reminding me of loved ones who are gone now.
    Minimizing also morphed for me into being much better with money, and lead me to a life of producing much less waste, which has further simplified my life (I probably produce 70-80% less waste, and I'm always looking for ways to improve that). I no longer want to buy something just because it's nice (and which then often went unused, which of course is wasteful). That's not to say I never purchase anything, but what I do buy, I buy with intention. Because I don't spend nearly as much money as I used to, I'm afforded opportunities for experiences (like spending 3 weeks in Spain next year), that I would NEVER have been able to do before minimizing!
    I guess what it all boils down to is quality of life. :)

    • @celticlass8573
      @celticlass8573 5 років тому

      @@susangraham101 For many people, papers are one of the hardest things, if not the hardest. Especially if you have a huge pile! You can start by finding out what is necessary to keep where you live, and for how long. Things like taxes should always be kept for example, but for how long depends on where you live. Here it's 7 years. Bank stuff is another thing you probably want to keep, as well as medical if you made any claim/paid anything for it, and also if you want to keep a medical history on hand. Any investment information, deeds, titles, mortgage information should be kept. Anything you are accumulating for taxes (receipts etc) should be kept too. And retirement stuff, legal stuff, etc etc.
      That's just an example, there I'm sure are more that you should keep, and of course you will need to find out how long for your area.
      When you gather what you need to keep, put it in date order, and put it somewhere organized. Not in a pile! Somewhere that's away, and where it lives from now on. :)

    • @celticlass8573
      @celticlass8573 5 років тому

      @Susan Graham And don't be discouraged if there's a lot to go through--just take the time to do it, even if it's 15 minutes a day (every day or nearly every day) and you'll get through it. I minimized 2 years ago and it took me 6 weeks (minus 2 days over Christmas) to finish, but I did it. Some days were only 15 minutes, some were several hours. Don't work to exhaustion because then it becomes a chore, just keep at it. You can do it!

    My advice for the college question is to follow whatever your school offers that interests you most. Because even if you don't use that specific degree directly with your job, there's still knowledge you gain from the college experience itself, as well as the classes related to your major, that will help in a lot of jobs and careers. It's a time to explore and see what interests you and you can change your major if it seems like it's not a good fit after trying for a while. I'm somewhat unique in that I knew way before I got accepted into a school what I wanted to study because I had a direct interest in the subject itself. But I haven't yet had a job that directly relates, yet I've used knowledge from the things I've learned with my work and I feel good knowing I have a background in something that matters a lot to me. And in addition to that, I've thought of a career path I intend to follow that does relate but in a different way than anyone would have expected. So for your own kids, maybe consider sharing similar advice. (?) I personally gained a lot from going about things this way (even though my family often questioned why I chose what I chose - but they absolutely supported me once I committed to it and understood why it was important to me).

    My dad saved some pretty neat things of mine. A drawing of "My Family" I did in Kindergarten, the first story I wrote and illustrated "Bill, The Worm Who Ran Away", and other bits and pieces of my writing and drawing from grade school. Fun stuff. I've saved a fair amount of the same types of things from my kids' school days, too.

    That is some solid college/career advice. I had to figure the same things out on my own so I hope some young adults hear it and it helps save them some heart ache. And I'd like to add that a lot of people never really figure out what they want to do so it's best not to stress over picking the right thing so young.

    I took a lot from this.. I’m a mom of two tweens. I went to nursing school..later in life but decided I didn’t want to be responsible for others like was expected of me, so I never did that. And I am happy for that! I initially went to college before I knew what I wanted to “be when I grew up” so to speak ha... that just cost me a bunch of money. I’ve found a few money making ways along the way, but I’m really still soul searching for that perfect money making opportunity that I’m going to be happy doing. We don’t have a lot of money but I’d rather live kind of lower on the financial end than go to a job I just can’t stand day in and day out. As long as our family has what we need and we do and for the most part we have what we want. Cliche as it is, money doesn’t buy happiness

    Best advice for HS student moving into college is to go into college undeclared and work hard on their first year because that adjustment is going to be very hard. Their first two years are nothing but core classes anyway. Being involved in classes and the college environment they will begin to develop their self identity and what they will lean towards for a career. HS is too ear3to know what you want to do with the rest of your life, your brain isn't even fully developed.

    I've really been enjoying Lost Causes of Bleak Creek on audiobook. Vikas Adam does a really great job with all the different voices. The one thing that irks me is his pronunciation of Candidatus / Candidati. It sounds like "candy-die-doose" and "candy-die-die". I guess that's the southern way? Anyway, I hope this gets adapted into a movie!

    We have the same car seat for our dog. My mom had to get it after her, her husband and the dog were in a car accident. She doesn't even remember or know how the dog got out of the car. He ended up getting car anxiety so he needs his car seat and he calms down

    I love the armchair pseudo psychology that Rhett and link present us. It takes more than seeing a therapist or reading an article to understand psychology. Nonetheless love the biscuits.
