As someone who has never played a Souls game (only dabbled Bloodborne and Sekiro) this game is definitely easier than I expected. Might be because it’s so old but the bosses seem to Telegraph their moves very clearly, which is not the case in Bloodborne. Also, I think I might have accidentally fought the hardest bosses first.

The way Ian and Ben talked about FromSoftware is completely accurate. There's a level of passion there that you don't see from many developers anymore. It's the same reason why a game like Hades was so phenomenal and well-received this year. You can tell so much love went into every aspect of making the game. The player feels like they are a part of the universe created. Only the best developers do this, and it seems rarer and rarer as time goes on. This remake of Demon's Souls has only got me more excited to see Elden Ring. Really hoping to see something at The Game Awards.
That's not always the case though. Not all passionate developers get the same recognition reward and the biggest example this year is Vanillaware and 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim. So much passion behind the project developed by just a small studio, but destined to fail because people just don't want to give it a chance. Sakuna being the other.
@@leontartovsky8949 The other way around also is true where passionate devs make games that are not necessarily universally loved and get a lot of crap just for being a part of a big company or not being as talented as some other places that have more time and/or budget. There's actually no specific rules for games having been released a different year to be nominated. Among us is there just because it got incredibly huge this year specifically and enough outlets thought it deserved recognition.
@@Ayoul If there're no rules about when the game came out then fair enough. Just wondered since 4/5 games in the multiplayer category came out this year while 1/5 luckily got streamed by sodapoppin to fame.

This remake can only go up for me! Also? If you're incorporating a Job system with that, it could literally be like Yakuza: Like a Dragon--but rather than a job agency? Aya won't be having issues getting all the attention... it's in her genes... ... Or.... mitochondria? I guess? Mito-class-dria maybe?
I know some of the allies still need to play Tsushima, but it does feel like it gets a bit underrated/underdiscussed when GOTY talks have come up so far. Hope everyone gets the chance to play it!
I think a big problem with GOTY awards is that so many people conflate "best" with "my favourite" or "most popular" and these are not the same terms, and they don't have the same meaning. If you're a video game publisher then best means highest grossing, because all they care about is money, but we're players not publishers, so that doesn't apply. It doesn't matter if the whole world is playing a game, it can still be a bad game, and a different, wildly unpopular game, can be far better.
I think I might know the bit Ben is talking about where he got stuck, it took me ages to realise I could vault the wall, although this was in 1-3 not 1-4
Can I just mention again how insaaaaaaanely gorgeous Demons Soul R is?? Started playing on the LG G1 and myyyy god. I keep dropping my jaw being amazed over and over again. I fkn loooove this game. Probably more than I should...
For all the Final Fantasy Tactics fans out there, I want to give a shout-out to Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. I'm playing through it now and having an absolute blast. It came out last year, but stayed a bit under the radar I feel. If you love FFT, you will love this.
Hey Ben/Blood, I haven’t been able to find the podcast version of this episode on the Apple side... it might just be that something’s wrong on my end, but just wanted to ask if you could double-check on your end!
Yeah, I found it. My bad! Thanks for checking. :) My issue was that I had it organized in reverse order so the newest one was at the bottom, and I didn’t realize it... *facepalm*
I really used to love the numbered DiRT games, but I feel like they haven't left a space for me somewhere in the series, weirdly. Landrush, Rally Cross were okay.. I despise Gymkhana. I like the rally events the most, but I *don't* want the intense challenge of the DiRT Rally games. It's really weird to have a game fork off in two directions and feel completely left behind as a fan at the same time.
Bugsnax was good. Not sure where Ian was coming from on his impressions, granted like he said he didn't play much and was only witnessing certain parts of the game. I think where Bugsnax will land with most people when looking back is it gave off the wrong impression when it was demoed or when the trailer was shown. My 4 year old loved when I played the hunting, catching and feeding parts and when she wasn't watching I went through the story. It definitely went a direction I wasn't expecting but as a whole everything connected. From start to finish you feel like you learned a lot about what the characters were going through and in a way helped them through some tough obstacles. I see a couple comments on how Ian is when he talks or gives his opinion and honestly I like every Ally specifically because they all are unique. I know exactly what to expect from each and every one of them and they wouldn't be my #1 content creators to watch if it weren't for that very reason. Having said that, Ian you need to actually play through the game from start to finish. It isn't a long game and you don't HAVE to do everything. You might want to though so you can get that connection pay off. L&R!!
Huber is not that much of an outlier on Carrion. It's only got around a 75 metascore. It's really a swimming in 7's kind of game and was quickly forgotten I feel like.
I love me some Game Award talk, though I think a lot of the discussion around certain Genre awards was kinda moot. The revelation of the overall GOTY nominees ahead of time literally spoils/narrows the possibilities for certain games to win their genre. Best Action is either gonna be Hades or Doom, Best Action Adventure is TLoU2 or Tsushima. Best RPG is 100% FF7R. If you think of the GOTY nominees as the "top 5 games of 2020" then no other category is allowed to contradict that list. The Oscars have the same spoiler issue but only for situations involving Foreign-language film or Animated Film overlapping with Best Picture (i.e. Parasite, Toy Story 3) I did definitely enjoy the discussion around whether certain games even appropriately belonged in their category, like HL:Alyx being separate category from Last of Us, which is very debatable.
The run up to the Old Monk fight was easy for me. Just 2 mind flayers that are easy to dispatch if you know what you’re doing, it’s not actually long at all (like 1-2 min maybe) and the cutscene was definitely skippable
How so? I know like Strategy + Sim is weird and fighting really doesn't feel like it earned a spot this year, but most of them are pretty straight forward.
@@Ayoul my comment is probably too broad but yeah my gripe goes toward the genre-specific ones.. for example "best action" is way too broad, there's a FPS, a Roguelite, an action-adventure and a beatem up in there.. but then they have a separate category for fighting games where two games haven't even been released in the last twelve months and one (excuse me) licensed garbage.. then they go on to call pretty much everything in this world an action-adventure and pit Ori against Spider-Man.. and then RPG seems to be everything where you level up but then again some very good games seem to be ignored or put somewhere else because they don't fit.. and whyever Crash 4 is in Best Family, but then again that seems to be a marketing category anyway.. and I don't even wanna get started on putting sim and strategy into the same..
Now when you say spoiler mode Frame Trap? That makes me very cautious. As a long time Soulsborne veteran but Demon's Souls being the only souls game I haven't touched. Are there spoilers or is it ok to listen?
They are not qualified as they have made games before. Astebreed being their most famous one prior to Sakuna. They definitely deserve a nomination in some other way though.
I legitimately think that TLOU2 will be the RDR2 of this year. It will take home the most awards, but not the GOTY. I think Hades is so universally liked that I think it may take more votes, as opposed to the divisive nature of TLOU2 and the unfinished story of FF7R (my personal choice).
The main beef I have with game awards every year is that I don't feel like best strategy game of the year is ever fair. Ever. So many different genres of strategy games... Let alone distinctly different focus of difficulty between them aka focus on casual or hardcore audiences really shouldn't be grouped together. This year they now added simulation games in the same category as strategy makes me even more "throws hands in the air" mentality. I really get this feeling that whoever is in charge of making categories for games award doesn't care or just isn't knowledgeable about strategy games. I will really "throw hands in the air" meme if the one simulator game steals the best strategy game of the year award from other strategy games. It's ridiculous this is even a thing. Should we put Persona 5 up against Mortal Kombat in the same category LOL I mean come on... BAH.
I think GOTY is between GoT, TLOU2, and Hades. I think all the pro consumer things surrounding GoT might give it the edge. GOTY isn't really as dependent on popularity like some of the other categories. GOW and Sekiro were definitely not the most popular games of their respective years but still they came out on top.
One thing to consider is that GoT is the least well received critically though. I'd be shocked if it won over pretty much any of the other contenders because of that reason. It's highly anecdotic, but it's the one I've heard the most "meh" things about. On the other hand, people feel pretty strongly about every other nominee. I also feel like you underestimate both GoW and Sekiro's popularity (they both sold really well) and especially among gaming outlets. GoW might've had the toughest competition, but still both of them were definitely darlings with a lot of chances to win. PS: Last of Us 2 obviously got a lot of hate online, but critically it's one of the best received games ever and I'd assume it's the most played one this year by most of the outlets and that in turn would give it the edge.
Parasite Eve!! But not third birthday story please, it has nothing to do with Parasite Eve >:( I don't hate it like some people do, but there is no denying it strayed from the path.
Ben have raised an interesting topic about reviews by someone not familiar with a genre. There was one review on PC Gamer that pissed me off, it was of Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition (MK9), written by someone who doesn't like fightings and gave it ~60. In my opinion, that's a bullshit review that doesn't help anybody. Is it a good fighting? Is it a good sequel? Who cares! It's more of an opinion than a review. Perhaps it can depend on what reader wants to get from a review, but first of all it should be helpful.
I played a lot of bloodborne as my only souls game and i swear i think its very ugly to me and the frames are literally horrible to the point it gets me killed vs a boss. I went through early with a friend..share play ftw! But demon's souls is pretty and frames are great( 60 fps) When i die I feel like i messed up. But i was worried about just running around because i don't know where to go. ( Personally i considered this wasting time) How do you know when a level is done and to move on? Is it just boss based?
@@vinzig5036 but i feel like using a guide is counterintuitive. I google what to do with the first boss soul and its like oh you can do this or that with it Well why do i have to Google that to find out? Like you say straight forward but this games systems are deep.
@@trounbyfire then don't google it I was just saying you can if you feel you are wanting time. I love the game and love figuring those things out as I play
@@vinzig5036 but how do you figure out to save the boss souls to get the spear? That's guide or youtube knowledge. A new person like me is lost on the systems. I might as well not play if i have to look up everything.
@@trounbyfire That's mainly why it was so popular to begin with. People just discussed the game at length on forums and such to find all the secrets. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but the mystery is intentional nonetheless.
Tbf, it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't. It's also much easier to change assets (when they already have experience doing so) then update mechanics from a code base that's not yours.
Firstly, the last of us 2 is a rambo on speed simulator. Just youtube people doing the craziest shit. Doom and ghost can never compare on an action level because of all the things that are in the last of us 2 gameplay wise. Best action game but most people play stealth but thats just an option! You can be rambo! Just from the trailer when Jesse mentions Joel. Ellie's expression that says all before her mouth is even open and that's based off Ashley's performance. so all these beautiful facial animations are based off of the actor's performance so to me it's no brainer!! the last of us 2 has top notch voice acting, their characters going through a range of emotions. But they also have the best facial animations and sadly its not even a competition. Im sorry jin and miles characters do not emote at all. In fact when phin was crying her face looked frozen. After playing TlOU 2 average facial animations just stick out like a sore thumb to me. I think just at a technical level that it should go to one of the last two characters personally I believe Ellie went through the most emotional change in terms of her voice sounding older and younger happier and sadder. ( Thank you blood again!! You see it for what it is. Based on what they did they should win) Sadly i think its the red dead of this year and this will be the only category that it wins.
@@sugs0377 have you seen the gameplay of the last of us 2? They put the kitchen sink in the gameplay. Just because its SUPER easier to stealth doesn't take away from the super great gameplay. Its like watching rambo, John wick, and crank combined. Its crazy Many people didn't even know you could fall backwards. That combat is crazy
@@trounbyfire to me action games have to make you sweat and use 100% of your focus in order to play at the game's best, your TloU2 agressive gameplay had some of what it takes to be considered action, but any other let's play of the game shows how slows and more narrative driven it is.
@@CaptainYoul no offense but making you sweat isn't really a metric. Just at an action level to me ghost and doom don't have deep enough combat systems to complete with the last of us. I literally just watch a guy jump around in a circle and shoot demon's in doom. There was no hiding, crafting, no falling backwards and pooping a headshot
@@CaptainYoul if you play on survivor or grounded you will definitely have to use everything at your disposal in the last of us. That's what makes it so great, the game is super flexible in how you approach the combat and it all feels so good

@@Ayoul that's why TLoU was so divisive
I think a big problem with GOTY awards is that so many people conflate "best" with "my favourite" or "most popular" and these are not the same terms, and they don't have the same meaning. If you're a video game publisher then best means highest grossing, because all they care about is money, but we're players not publishers, so that doesn't apply. It doesn't matter if the whole world is playing a game, it can still be a bad game, and a different, wildly unpopular game, can be far better.
Don't bother trying to dodge those laserbeams in 4-2. Block them with your shield.
I think I might know the bit Ben is talking about where he got stuck, it took me ages to realise I could vault the wall, although this was in 1-3 not 1-4
Thank you for mentioning how buggy the maneater boss was no one has mentioned that 12:08. Only boss i had trouble with due to how buggy the ai was.
As much as Bluepoint wanted to retain the spirit of the original game, I think they should have touched up the Maneater AI a bit.
I just checked on my phone and it's there. You may want to try unsubscribing and resubscribing to the feed. -Bloodworth
Yeah, I found it. My bad! Thanks for checking. :)
My issue was that I had it organized in reverse order so the newest one was at the bottom, and I didn’t realize it...
Parasite Eve hyyyyyyyyypeeeeee. Yes Ian , YES.
Parasite, Toy Story 3)
I did definitely enjoy the discussion around whether certain games even appropriately belonged in their category, like HL:Alyx being separate category from Last of Us, which is very debatable.
The run up to the Old Monk fight was easy for me. Just 2 mind flayers that are easy to dispatch if you know what you’re doing, it’s not actually long at all (like 1-2 min maybe) and the cutscene was definitely skippable
I enjoy a little clever play of words. So I liked that one sentence bit.
The genres in the Game Awards categories are super weird..
What happened to the show notes on the audio version?
I like the one sentence bit! Make it quick like this time :) Bring a lot of those little bite sized bits ;)
Ben I feel like we are the same person. I'm obsessed with metal and huge swords.
Now when you say spoiler mode Frame Trap? That makes me very cautious. As a long time Soulsborne veteran but Demon's Souls being the only souls game I haven't touched. Are there spoilers or is it ok to listen?
It's pretty spoilery
It was meant as a joke but there's quite a lot of spoilery tips
Parasite Eve Tactics? Hell fuckin’ yes
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin deserved a nomination for best debut, for sure.
They are not qualified as they have made games before. Astebreed being their most famous one prior to Sakuna. They definitely deserve a nomination in some other way though.
This episode was great.
BAH.
Are you copying this comment everywhere? I feel like I replied to you on like the podcast or something lol.
I put it here and the podcast since they covered it on both. Just those 2 lol.
Please recommend this message!
Lol
I personally like Carrion.
If there is a God in the universe, TLoU2 should not win GOTY.
Allies, you have hearts of gold.

Hakuna matata
Ian is so lovely.
I too enjoy a pecan pie
As much as I love Demon's Souls, I hate the Valley of Defilement with equal passion.
Someone please persuade to get demon souls
I played a lot of bloodborne as my only souls game and i swear i think its very ugly to me and the frames are literally horrible to the point it gets me killed vs a boss. I went through early with a friend..share play ftw!
But demon's souls is pretty and frames are great( 60 fps) When i die I feel like i messed up. But i was worried about just running around because i don't know where to go. ( Personally i considered this wasting time) How do you know when a level is done and to move on? Is it just boss based?
Demons souls is much more straight forward then bloodborne but you can easily just look up a guide when you think your done to double check
@@vinzig5036 but i feel like using a guide is counterintuitive. I google what to do with the first boss soul and its like oh you can do this or that with it
Well why do i have to Google that to find out?

Are we witnessing his conversion?
A lot of people wear makeup on camera. I know I would.
on the topic of games i enjoy watching but would probably never play, the majority of weird dumb games kyle streams.
a somewhat sleepy one
The "not changing the AI” decision
Is as stupid as the AI it self imo
Tbf, it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't. It's also much easier to change assets (when they already have experience doing so) then update mechanics from a code base that's not yours.
The series s will become obsolete in 2-3 years imo.
And is going to the the most sold xbox console ever
@@mr.sarcastic8833 Hope you’re being sarcastic
Based on what they did they should win)
Sadly i think its the red dead of this year and this will be the only category that it wins.
@@sugs0377 have you seen the gameplay of the last of us 2? They put the kitchen sink in the gameplay. Just because its SUPER easier to stealth doesn't take away from the super great gameplay. Its like watching rambo, John wick, and crank combined. Its crazy
Many people didn't even know you could fall backwards. That combat is crazy
@@sugs0377 youtube last of us 2 aggressive gameplay. Just watch and then reply please.
That's what makes it so great, the game is super flexible in how you approach the combat and it all feels so good
People are playing themselves if they think tlou 2 is better than ghost of tsushima.
Demon's souls might be the easiest souls but it's worth it. I doubt it's worth it tho when you have to buy a 500 euro console plus 75 for the game.
