Upon her passing nearly forty years ago, my grandmother left me a book published in 1946 by Columbia Records (by then part of the Columbia Broadcasting System, who purchased them in 1938). Essentially, it contained the notes from their classical recordings (then 78 RPM) that were written by leading musicologists of the day.
The entry for the Op. 115 quintet contained this passage: "In this work, Brahms sums-up his life. It is a statement of resignation without bitterness, cloaked in an autumnal mist."
This performance perfectly captures those qualities, and highlights the wistfulness permeating the sun-dappled autumn light that filters through late Brahms.
There is much hidden passion in this work - not least for Clara Schumann - which these gifted players find. Such balance and attention to the harmonics.
Excellent collaboration. Beautiful playing. Simply great music. Bravo!
Sad and sweet. Good performance!
Excellent ! 15:43
I agree, a magnicficent work. Its' a relief tome that Brfahms does not finish with the dutifull allegro Finale.
EXCELENTE ...

Clarinet is always sharp, in most other performances I've heard on UA-cam. Just pull the barrel out very slightly ..done.
Clarinet is very much not sharp. It's spot on.
Nope. Not sharp, like your ear.
I think you guys missed what was being said. The post says “in most other performances”. I believe that implies I’m this recording the clarinet is not sharp :)
Yea?
