      I LOVED Tonya's costumes, and her amazing and gutsy skating!!! She was a massive talent. I believe if she had trained the way she did for the 1991 competitions and had she remained in such peak condition, she would have been absolutely unstoppable. She may very well have come home with TWO Olympic gold medals! 🥇🥇💚💚

      Actually, had she landed at least one triple toe, she would have won the whole thing. Or, tripled her double salchow. She needed 5 triples that day in order to win. But, in those days -- '92 to ''96 -- they really put a premium on artistry over technical difficulty.

    • @valmacclinchy

      @@pueraeternus111 artistry is important. Sometimes people forget it's Figure skating. Not a jump contest. But Tonya was very graceful and artistic. Her Ina Bauers were absolutely gorgeous, and her spins. Her music choices were very different and choreo too.

      @@valmacclinchy Perhaps. But it seems to me that like in a lot of sports judged by comity or panel, if you are not a "Darling" so to speak. Unless you are perfect, they will look for any reason not to give you the win. "Oh see how she sneezed at the 2 minute mark, that is 3 points off." I have seen this happen to other athletes. Some people get wins easier if they are liked and that is one of the hardest facts of life in sports competition.

  • @stevieknees

    It’s so sad to watch because this was her life. This was her. No matter what bad upbringing she had, when she was on that ice, she was just like everyone else, an amazing athlete and she knew she had it. She knew she was amazing. She deserves to have her 1994 National title reinstated. The things that people get away with these days, she did not deserve a lifetime ban. To me it seemed like an easy way to deal with someone that they clearly did not like. I mean, she knew she could do it, why would she need to knock someone out of a competition? Athletes love competition. They pride themselves on it. She knew she could do it and she deserved to be treated better. Regardless of what people think of Nancy, she won a sympathy vote in my eyes. Everyone has their own story, Tonya’s was a lot more relatable than hers. She is the underdog and deserved better.

    It's funny. The Nationals performance had the addition of the Triple Toe-Triple Toe and Salchow ... but something about this performance at Worlds felt better, to me. More exciting, somehow. And her Axel, Lutz, Flip and Loop were outstanding here compared to Nationals (where they were all pretty great, too). And when the crowd roared after her Triple Axel here, combined with Sandra Bezic's yell ... GOOSEBUMPS.

  • @shihlin1
    @shihlin1 3 роки тому +6

    From "Send in the Clowns" to Tone Loc's "Wild Thing", Ha, Ha.... only Tonya !
    Had Tonya landed either one of those triple-triple combination jumps, she woulda taken the gold.
    She lost narrowly to Kristi due to less triple jumps despite landing the triple axel.
    Still, 1991 was Tonya's most consistent year.
    From here on, it was unfortunately downhill.....

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 3 роки тому +2

      Many have always believed that no, Tonya still would have lost because Kristi for the past years was guided and the bias was so evident, even when she was still juniors. But there might have been a chance still for Tonya because it was the international judges who appreciated Tonya more than her own skating federation.

  • @shihlin1
    @shihlin1 6 років тому +22

    The video clip says Kristi was the favorite at this Worlds, but I actually think Tonya was. She beat Kristi in winning the U.S. Nationals. But Tonya's LP left out three triple jumps whereas Kristi missed only one triple. That was the difference. If Tonya didn't pop that triple-triple combo, she would've won.

    • @MAllanDavis1979

      I think the favorites were Midori Ito, Yamaguchi and Harding... Ito won in 1989. This Worlds was the first competition without compulsory figures. Figures used to count for 60% of the total score before 1973. I know because I was there... Midori Ito was the reason they got rid of them and they weren't very excited but they were the greatest foundation. Anyhoo, the three mentioned above were all three able to win. I was there. I used to live in Munich. Live there for 11 years. It was an exciting competition.

      @alexsdb9712 3 роки тому

      Kristi was so lucky figures were abolished by 91 because it's a fact that she was weak in figures. Meanwhile, Tonya not surprisingly was very good in figures. And the only time Kristi did her "best" figures results was at home in the United States, because the judges were American and were really guiding her upwards ever since she was in juniors. And it's known Tonya and her abilities were suppressed and held down by her own federation. But even then, Tonya would always beat Kristi in the figures portion and the U.S. Nationals judges couldn't deny or mask it.

    • @grantgoffin4774
      @grantgoffin4774 3 роки тому

      @@alexsdb9712 Ito was also lucky figures were gone. Tonya ironically would have had a better shot at the 92 Olympics with figures which severely weakens Kristi, Midori, and even Nancy and Surya. With her injuries and already limited jumping I doubt Trenary is a factor in 92 even with figures included, so she isnt too much worry even now.

      That jump was new to women - Midori had been working on it for years, and then Tonya...it wasn't expected of women at that time. In the early 90s, it was a big deal when women would land a triple lutz. The men always seem to be one rotation ahead, about ten years ahead when it comes to jumps, but artistically, you hardly ever see a man try to pull off an Ina Bauer or something like that. It's become a jumping contest (again).

    Why I don't understand and find annoying is what is a champion when they can either do the big show ase jump or the triple triples , but never ever lay down both !! Lol. They do one and its spectacular and fall or pop out the next. .I mean they breath and train skating...it seems they should be able to consistently pull it off once in a while. It's always one or the other.

      Aspen Robinson - if you want to see a champion skate without flaws, falls, etc. then watch Midori Ito's 1989 worlds LP or Midori's 1990 worlds LP. Both flawless. For the 1989 skate, Midori received five 6.0 for technical. In the 1990 skate, she received three 6.0 for technical. Watch them and then give your opinion on them.

    I assume Trenery who could only do a flip had retired at this point.

      +vistaprime I believe she retired because of her injury that prevented her from competing at the '91 US Nationals. If she had been healthy, I think she would have definitely wanted to defend her title here at World's. But I do agree that she was definitely behind in terms of her technical content. 1991 was definitely a turning point in the ladies' field. Skaters were doing triple lutz-triple toes and triple axels. This was probably the most exciting time in all of skating. I don't know what happened afterwards, but 25 years have passed and the women are just barely catching up.

      Trenary tried to make a come back and competed at the 1991 Skate Canada International where she had a rough Free Skate. I think she placed 4th there. Not being able to land her triples consistently anymore at that point led her to retire at the end of 1991.

      @@3Axel1996 I wish she had fared better - she was always a delight to watch. I suppose when you are always competing against Midori there's not much she could do. Jill had great artistry, and Midori's was OK, but technically Midori just blasted everyone out of the water. I enjoyed Jill's pointed toes when she jumped, especially.

    If Tonya cont'd to believe in herself and work/train hard, she could've had the skating career she wanted. Instead she resorted to cheap tactics and dirty tricks, which proved to be her own undoing in the end. So sad, so sad.

      I don't know people says she wanted or she did hurt Nancy, we know the guy who did that. There's the interview of that guy on YT if you want to see.
      She didn't knew, even if she heard them she shouldn't know who was targeted.
      Honestly, they shouldn't have stopped Tonya to do skating, i mean Nancy didn't had a broke bone, just a bruise. Plus Tonya didn't asked for it and they removed her of the skating world because of her weird husband doing. Punishing someone because of what someone else did is totally unfair.
      It's like your brother break a glass and you are being grounded too because of him.

      She DID work and train hard, and believed in herself. Her skating never really suffered much, it was her image.
