Michael Giacchino really cared about this, as a love letter to classic horror movies. He’s composed countless films, but this is unarguably one of his best works. He’s proven he’s as good a director as he is a composer.
This ode to classic horror is a masterpiece.

That was just hilarious because of how absolutely pure and innocent it sounded😂
"Ted" is empathic and is drawn to strong emotions, particularly fear. However, the fear causes him some distress, and his body secretes a chemical that causes whatever he touches to burn, which he uses to eliminate the source of the fear that distresses him. Thus, "Whatever knows fear burns at the touch of... the Man-Thing!"
I thought that was supposed to be the Man-Thing, came here to ask, thanks!

Many don't like the werewolf here, because we have seen 'better' ones, but I appreciate what they did here. The Werewolf by Night comics are based on the 1941 movie 'The Wolf Man' and that's the design they also used for the werewolf in this movie. So for once they used the comic instead of changing it to a more modern design.
The MCU has now given us both a Halloween and a Christmas special. Both excellent. That alone makes it unique out of ANY franchise.

Ted isn’t just a normal name used for comedic effect when describing a big swampy creature, it’s the name he had before turning into a monster. His comic history is pretty crazy, but the basically Ted was a scientist who was trying to recreate the supersoldier serum but, sadly for Ted, drove his car into a swamp and got sucked into the Nexus of All Realities (the crossroads between every multiverse) which turned him into the big flora monster we see in this special.
The “Man Thing” was such a surprise in this show. I loved the way it was crafted.
Not only did they present this in the original Universal Monster's black and white.
The title font is the same one used for the original Wolfman film.
The ending font is the same as the font from The Wizard Of Oz, which makes the closing scenes tranfer to color all the better.
Even the Make up for the Werewolf looks like something out the the original Wolfman film.
Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly killed it! We need more of them in the future and of course Ted!
Ted Sallis a.k.a. the Man-Thing. Marvel's supernatural swamp creature started out life as scientist Ted Sallis. An accident led to his becoming the creature known as Man-Thing. Whoever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch.
Jack Russell a.k.a. Werewolf By Night. Another 70's supernatural creature comic book release. Along with Tomb of Dracula, Ghost Rider as well as appearances of the Frankenstein Monster. This led to the 80's introduction of Moon Knight who originally appeared in Werewolf By Night as a nemesis. 😮
Ted or better Dr. Theodore Sallis aka MAN-THING being in the MCU is actually a pretty big deal! He is connected to what you have seen in WandaVision as the lair of Agatha where she confronted Wanda the first time as her real self and not disguised as the Neighbor. Man-Thing is the guardian of the Nexus in the comics and could fill this role in the MCU as well, as NEXUS events and locations have been mentioned and teased in WandaVision and LOKI.
I'm still not over the fact that the name of the werewolf is Jack Russel!
I would totally watch a Halloween Special focusing on a different monster character every year, this was so fun. Thanks as always, Addie, and have a lovely rest of the week!

What I loved the most about this special is that it pays homage to a lot of monochrome horror/suspense films that many have enjoyed in their youth. Horror isn’t really my genre, but my favorite “horror-themed” movie continues to be Young Frankenstein.
This movie was directed by longtime composer Michael Giacchino. And yes, he composed the score for this movie as well. He previously composed for Doctor Strange 2016, the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Growing up, Michael and his brother Anthony would make Regular 8 and Super 8 home movies together with their family and friends. He even went to film school at one point. So even though this is his big directorial debut for a movie, he already had experience of working behind the camera.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige approached Michael and asked if he’d like to direct a project. Michael responded saying that he liked fringe characters. He liked the ones that were off the beaten path because there are a lot of interesting things to do with them.
He happened to have grown up reading the Werewolf by Night comics as well. So this project was definitely right up his alley.
Next time is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - the close out to phase four. You might wanna have tissues ready.
Hey, Addie! ULYSSES BLOODSTONE was a prehistoric man who came into possession of a fragment of the Bloodstone which embedded itself in his chest. The gem is an alien artifact from another dimension that protectively encased an evil intelligence called the Hellfire Helix capable of creating monstrous guardians. One such guardian destroyed Ulysses' entire tribe. For 10,000 years, he hunted the Bloodstone's guardians to avenge his tribe and psionically vanquished the Helix within the stone in the 20th-century. Having fulfilled his goal, he removed the fragment from his chest and aged instantly to dust. The uninhabited stone still has the power to amplify energy, heal, emit energy and repel monsters. It is now possessed by Ulysses' daughter, ELSA BLOODSTONE.
JACK RUSSELL is the WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, the Wolfman of the Marvel Universe. He fought the vampiric-looking man-bat trophy mounted in the chamber because werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies. MOON KNIGHT started off in the comics as a werewolf hunter and traded blows with Jack more than once!
TED SALLIS is the MAN-THING, a former biochemist who has lost his intelligence after merging with a mystical swamp while injected with a sulfur-based regenerative serum with which he was experimenting. He responds to anger, hate and fear by secreting sulfuric acid that severely burns those he touches. He is gentle with those who have no ill intent and who are not afraid of him. The portion of the Everglades he protects is known as THE NEXUS OF ALL REALITIES and Man-Thing can create portals to alternate realities as well as teleport to locations he has seen.
Man-Thing has been a member of the THUNDERBOLTS and all three characters have been members of the MIDNIGHT SONS along with BLADE, MORBIUS, FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER, GHOST RIDER, DAIMON HELLSTROM, JENNIFER KALE and BROTHER VOODOO!
The special was emulating the black-and-white Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s starring the likes of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains and John Carradine even though it was set in 2025.
GAEL GARCIA BERNAL is part of the 1990s Mexican Renaissance that includes DIEGO LUNA, DEMIAN BICHIR, SALMA HAYEK, ALFONSO CUARON, ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU and GUILLERMO DEL TORO.
LAURA DONNELLY is from "The Nevers" and "Outlander".
The first color film to use three-strip Technicolor for the length of the feature was "Becky Sharp" in 1935!

Honestly one of my fav things Marvel has done. When they take big left field swings in their Disney+ shows they really hit home runs (i.e. Wandavision and Loki). I think you’ll see Jack and Ted again. This is I think going to tie in to the Dark Avengers including Black Knight, Moonknight, Elsa Bloodstone, Jack, Ted (Man-Thing) and of course Blade. Give the whole franchise to Giacchino who directed this and let him be the auteur like the Russos were with the Infinity Saga.
this was amazing and honestly this was the project that made me start to think that marvel should allow their directors more artistic freedom to shoot films in their own styles. in the comic books each writer artist combo has a chance every run to redefine the characters and give a different perspective. like could you imagine a wes anderson fantastic four or a quenten tarantino luke cage(pretty sure i remember him saying he liked that comic).
The Dark Avengers aren't a supernatural team, they are villains pretending to be heroes, Marvel's supernatural teams are the Midnight Sons and the Legion of Monsters
Glad you liked it. Fyi, the main character's name is (stg) "Jack Russell" & I would expect to see him & Ted (aka "Man-Thing") again in the upcoming Blade reboot. Fun fact: this was actually shot in black & white then colourized using old school techniques to give it that "glorious technicolor" feel.
This special didn’t get promoted enough. I didn’t even know about it until the trailer came out only a month or so before it released.
This badass Marvel Studios special was also excellent, brutal, and creepy. I liked King Kong (1933), The Wolf Man (1941), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Poltergeist (1982), and the Twilight Zone influences in Werewolf By Night. I also admired Jack Russell and Ted" Sallis` friendship. Michael Giacchino brilliantly directed and composed this special. Jack and Elsa have fantastic chemistry. Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing are all unique characters. The deaths in this special were fantastic. The transition from black and white to color was breathtaking.
This was such a fun Special Presentation! (Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is another utterly delightful one... and tear-jerking.)
I love this special so much, part of me wish it was longer but a the same time I think short and sweet it’s perfect. I hope we see more of Jack, Ted and Elsa in future projects.
"Ted" is Man-Thing. He was mentioned in an episode of Agents of SHIELD after SHIELD's records were made public in Captain America: Winter Soldier and his bust was seen carved into a tower in Thor: Ragnarok (possibly related to two of the situations that Jack said he got himself into that he had to rescue him from).
I did saw the statue of Man-Thing in Thor Ragnarok as a cameo. Heck, even there's also Beta Ray Bill.
Yes werewolves vampires all exist in the Marvel universe... Dracula is a pretty big character in marvel he is done pretty good in the few animated series .. It was great seeing man thing But yeah if you're really interested just read the comics there's lots of them with these characters there's even a subscription service that you don't need to buy comics you justread them on your pc Still amazing artwork As you're reading them.. Yeah for sure we'll see them again maybe even with Frankenstein and the howling commandos... They're a fighting group Werewolf is part of it... But it was great seeing these characters brought to live action
I've always preferred the old school look of werewolves over the modern. The last few decades most films just show the final transformation as a normal to large wolf but in the classic Hollywood films they retained a much more human appearance. I think Lon Chaney Jr. would approve.
This is one of the best things the MCU has done. It was an absolute surprise to many. I wasn't even aware of the production of this until it was released and I was blown away. I've always enjoyed classic horror movies (The Mummy, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, etc) and this is basically MCU's love letter to that sort of era. It was fantastic and I hope they continue on this since some classic monsters did appear in Marvel comics (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc). I've probably watched this a dozen times, at least, and I still just love it.
the director of this basically said "im not making a marvel thing, im making a horror thing that has marvel characters in it." and that's probably why it's so good.
also if it wasn't in black and white this definitely woulda been rated TV-MA with all the blood. it was like an unintended censorship.
There are more animalistic werewolf but the reason that Jack looks so humanoid is because he can stay in werewolf form and speak similar to smart hulk.

Ted is The Man-Thing.
Dr. Theodore Salis
He's one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.
He was a scientist who used to work with Dr. Barbara "Bobbi" Morse, AKA Laura Barton AKA Mockingbird AKA SHIELD Agent 19(Hawkeye's wife).
I would attempt to explain what the Man-Thing is, but it is immensely confusing and complicated.
I'm a living encyclopedia of the Marvel Universe, and I still don't really fully understand it.
He is a Nexus being.
Like he IS the Nexus of all realities.
Or he's the guardian of the Nexus of all realities.
Unclear.
The focal point of not just the Marvel Multiverse, but the entire Omniverse going beyond Marvel and including DC and My Little Pony and the real world and everything else you can think of.
Ted was working on researching the super soldier serum in a hidden research base in the swamp. He was teamed up with Dr Curt Connors, who was developing the serum that would eventually turn him into the Spider-Man villain The Lizard, and Dr. Bobbi Morse.
If I remember correctly, Dr Connor's had already left for some reason, when suddenly the base was raided by AIM, who were seemingly there looking for Dr Connors' Lizard formula.
To protect both the Super Soldier Serum and the Lizard formula, and to give himself a better chance of surviving the raid, Ted injected himself with both of them.
His car then crashed into the swamp, where the magical energies inherent to the swamp and the combined serums took him over and transformed him into the Man-Thing.
Anytime somebody is screaming in terror and he grabs them and like melts them into flaming goo, that's his most iconic power.
All those who know fear burn at the Man-Thing's touch.
But he has basically the same powers as Groot.
Like he can turn into vines and slither into places and grow to immense sizes.
He has massive super strength - supposedly nearly unlimited, since he is the living embodiment of Earth's life force.
He can manipulate plant matter and make like plants grow and bloom and stuff.
He can sense emotions. Sensing fear causes him to automatically start generating ultra-powerful caustic acid - hence "all those who know fear burn at the Man-Thing's touch".
He can swap things from one universe to another.
Not just like people or items, but entire locations. Like he could swap the forest of one universe with the forest of another. He could swap an airport from one universe to another.
He can also casually just travel to other universes.
He can use his dimensional traveling power to teleport around.
He can regenerate himself.
When he regains the power of speech, he speaks the universal language that all beings can understand automatically as if it were the language they were most comfortable with.
Very good, for such a short film.
Michael Giacchino did a fantastic job, especially for someone better known for his music.

I'm so glad you liked this, Addie! It's one of my favorite things Marvel has done. Just fantastic!! A few things:
1) Man-Thing is my favorite Marvel monster, and they did him right! I see that others have provided background on him, so I won't go into much detail. His name is Ted Sallis, and he was trying to recreate the super soldier serum before an accident in the swamp turned him into Man-Thing. He is drawn to human emotions, but the one that causes him extreme discomfort is fear, which is why his tag line is: "Whatever knows fear, burns at the touch of (the) Man-Thing!"
2) A fun little easter egg during the opening narration is when he says "where monsters dwell," which was the title of a long-running Marvel comic book in the 60's and 70's.
3) The production values are fantastic! The black-and-white is perfect.
4) There is an incredible feature on Disney+ about Michael Giacchino and his brother making home movies in their younger years. Definitely worth watching!
5) Moon Knight was introduced in a Werewolf by Night comic book, so I'm really hoping that they meet at some point.

This introduced the supernatural of the MCU in more detail than Doctor Strange alone. The Howling Commandos are slowly getting together.

Am I the only one when in Addie's intro when she says hi it's Addie and waves, I wave back and introduce myself? Just asking Addie has the cutest and sweetest intro, i feel that I need to introduce myself as well in each video.

Everybody knows the superheroes from Marvel and DC, but both companies had successful lines of horror comics, as well.
Amusingly, both of the most famous swamp-monsters -- Man-Thing and Swamp Thing -- had stories from guys who had been roommates, early in their careers.
Gerry Conway, at Marvel, wrote one of the first stories, and Len Wein wrote the second, for Man-Thing.
Then, Wein moved over to DC, and came up with Swamp Thing.
The characters started out so similarly that Stan Lee and some of the other leaders at Marvel briefly discussed legal action, but decided not to follow through.
Moreover, as Conway noted, the two characters quickly went in vastly different directions, so everybody was satisfied and let the matter drop.
But, yeah, Marvel's horror titles introduced characters who went on to become iconic.
Blade was introduced in a horror title, and the trilogy of Blade films starring Wesley Snipes proved so successful that Marvel realized that films based on their titles could actually be a good idea.
Moonknight was also introduced as an antagonist in the title, "Werewolf by Night," and Michael Morbius (the less said about *that* film, the better...) also started out in a horror title.
The introduction of Man-Thing into the MCU at this point in time is also pretty auspicious, given the nature of the swamp he normally inhabits -- but that drifts into spoiler territory.
And, his name when he was human really was Ted -- Dr. Theodore Sallis, who tried to reproduce the Super Soldier Serum, but then got targeted by Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM, from the Iron Man films).
Things went pretty badly pear-shaped, and Sallis fled into the swamp.
Man-Thing is what came out.
It'll be interesting to see what the MCU does with the character.
This one is definitely a gem!!!! Hope they keep it going!!!! There were some great Marvel monster comics that they could bring into this world!!!!

I love this version so much I will forgive the liberties they took with two of my favorite characters. I bought both Man-Thing (Ted) and Werewolf by Night (Jack) at my local convenience store as they were coming out.
Since marvel has introduced Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Blade, The Darkhold and many more I am hoping they will also keep up with more of the supernatural side of things. Heck WWbN fought Iron Man in the comics so who knows.

"werewolf by night" was one of marvel's horror titles from the 70s. moon knight made his debut there as a contract killer-slash-villain-of-the-month. moon knight ended up letting the werewolf go free after learning his employers' plans to force jack to kill others for them.
I hope we see Werewolf by Night in Moon Knight Season 2 after Avengers Secret Wars movie.
This film was done in the classic Universal Monsters franchise style, from those genre-creating films of the 1930's 40's and 50's. The 1941 film "The Wolfman" is one of my favorites from the Universal Pictures franchise. It's a very well done monster/horror film, staring Lon Chaney Jr, Bela Lugosi, and Claude Rains. It's really cool and creepy and has a lot of pathos. I recommend you watch the original, perhaps as a "gateway" film into some of the other great films, such as "Dracula" (1931), "Frankenstein" (1931), "The Mummy" (1932) and "The Bride of Frankenstein" ((1935)! These are the foundations of the whole Horror genre and they are great films! Check them out this Halloween season!

As a boy back in 1980 I bought a comic called Marvel Team Up Spider Man and Warewolf By Night. So I've been aware of the Character. So when I became aware of the special I was
happy. And for good reason because it was great! This actors portrayal was just how that kid back in 80 imagined it. Your reactions are wonderful. You're someone I could watch movies with.
Thought it be interesting to point out that Jack Russell actor Gael Garcia Bernal also did the voice of Hector Rivera in Coco, along with Jonathan Pangborn actor Benjamin Bratt in Doctor Strange doing the voice of Ernesto de la Cruz.
I do remember Ted or Man Thing in the comics they were a bit left field I loved them.
This is the MCU special that I didn't know I wanted. I absolutely loved the old-school B&W monster flick feel it had to it, and it left me wanting to see more of Jack, Ted, and Elsa.

In the wildly varying quality of Phase 4 projects, who knew the small-scale Halloween special would be one of the best Marvel things ever produced?? Michael Giacchino did amazing work on this, especially considering this was his first time directing and not (just) composing music!
It was his third time directing, actually. But the previous two were shorts.

Heyyy, it's Bill-E and this monster movie took me way back to when I watched the old B n W monster movies when I was a kid. All of the classics... Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, of course the Werewolf too. They got even better when they met up with Abbott and Costello!

This is so good. Gloriously captures the feel of the old Universal classic monster movies, and introduces us to some great but underappreciated Marvel characters. Ted, AKA Man-Thing, actually had a movie in the early 2000s, but it was just kind of a generic, low-budget, straight-to-video monster movie, with a "thing" in the swamp killing people. This was SO much better.
There is actually a Marvel film from 2005 (three years before the MCU) called 'Man-Thing' that tells the story of 'Ted'.

Addie perfectly described why I love Phase 4. It wasn't for everyone, but as a life long comic fan it was so fun just seeing them tackle this world from so many angles. Marvel isn't just Stark or Steve Rogers, it's decades of unique characters and genres and I loved seeing them get a chance to shine.
It's really weird that they decided to make Elsa so stoic. She's almost as quipy as Spider-Man in the comics.
Hey Addie, I discovered you over your great Reacts to John Wick, Deadpool and Ready Player One (2 of my fav movies). At the end Ready Player One they recommended Edge of Tomorrow (another one of my fav movies). "He who knows fear burns at the ManThing's touch." The comics are wishy-washy about who knows fear and who doesn't. Hulk didn't burn, but Professor Hulk does. The manthing is walking goop, and splashes when someone powerful hits him. Manthing has also defeated the Hulk before by drowning him inside himself, but later iterations of Hulk don't require air.
It's been 40 years since I read Manthing. He was friendly and dangerous when I first read him, but couldn't understand as much as Ted does here. I think he's a product of a super soldier serum. There are many outcomes to it... Red Skull, Captain America, Sentry, etc.

This is actually my favorite thing that Marvel has put out through Disney+. It's super unique, a ton of fun, and a nice nod to old horror films of the 30s and 40s. Not a bad directorial debut for Michael Giacchino. He's composed the scores for several Marvel films and others beyond that (my favorite work of his is actually The Batman score). He also composed the music for this special which makes him the first (or at least one of the very few in history) to both direct and compose the same project.
This was the third project he directed, but the first two were shorts.

This film was great. I always liked Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing aka Ted in the comics so it was great seeing them both here. Lol, if I had to even nitpick anything about Elsa, it's just that she didn't get to curse enough (in the comics she swears like a drunken sailor! 😄)
So yeah, if they ever do a sequel with more of Elsa or Ted in particular I'm all in.

I play an online game called “Marvel Strike Force” and Elsa Bloodstone TOTAL BADASS in the that game. I love her so much that she’s part of my second best team behind the Avengers!
Since you liked this, if you need a Halloween theme you can watch classic Universal monster movies to which this movie was an homage. One of the recurring characters that Jack either teams up with or faces against is Moon Knight but I don't think we're going to see much of either from the MCU in the foreseeable future

I honestly wasn't sure about this one. But I love your reactions so, I'd thought I give it a go. You are right it was fun. I'm also glad it wasn't a stupid love story. For a while I thought that's where they were going. Anyway, great reaction.

Fun reaction, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Werewolf By Night (2022). I enjoyed watching it with my girlfriend in October last year. BTW, watching this now makes it a perfect fun, not-so-scary mid-summer Halloween treat. Another not-so-scary Halloween movie that I would love to suggest to you is Disney's Haunted Mansion (2023). My girlfriend & I just saw it in Dolby Cinema last night and we both enjoyed it.
Jack Russell is absolutely one of my newest favorites in the MCU. Just the most adorable guy ever.

We need a show or movie of Ted and the werewolf dude, Just them traveling the world together running from monster hunters, running into other monsters and marvel characters like strange sense he deals with the magic and monsters. Just we need more films like this to come from marvel. If they keep doing this then I would enjoy the MCU again.
