The Seattle Mariners build a death star | Dorktown

  • The late-‘90s Seattle Mariners were like nothing we’ve seen before or since. This was a team that had featured four Hall of Fame-caliber players - Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, and Alex Rodriguez - in their primes. What could go wrong? Absolutely nothing. Everything went fine. In fact, uh, don’t watch this episode.
    Corrections:
    • 11:45 - I didn’t properly establish this in the narration, but as the chart indicates, this only assesses the greatest center fielders as of 1997. Were the sample extended to the present day, Mike Trout would be No. 1 on this list. This is egregious cherry-picking and I deserve to be yelled at.
    • 24:58 - There’s a copy-paste goof on the Y-axis here. The top gridline marks a 4.00 ERA, not 5.00.

It's an _awfully_ good line in this context, but I have to say you don't get out much. Take just _The Sopranos,_ for starters.
      HARSH LANGUAGE ALERT
      ---
Making small-talk in bed after dull, unimaginative oral sex.
Tony's young Russian mistress: I've been reading _Chicken Soup for the Soul._
Tony: You should try tomato sauce for your ass - it's the Italian version.
      ---
On learning that his son A.J. is facing an ADD diagnosis at school.
      Tony: What constitutes a fidget?
      ---
When Big Pussy goes on the lam, without leaving a forwarding address:
Tony [to Dr Melfi]: I can't find Pussy anywhere.
      ---
Dr Melfi: When's the last time you had a prostate exam?
Tony: Hey, I don't even let anyone wag their finger in my _face._
      ---
The following all from just one immortal episode:
Tony: [over the phone] It's a bad connection so I'm gonna talk fast! The guy you're looking for is an ex-commando! He killed sixteen Chechen rebels single-handed!
Paulie Walnuts: You're not gonna believe this. The guy killed 16 Czechoslovakians. He was an interior decorator.
Christopher: Captain or not right now we're just two assholes lost in the woods.
      ---
Tony Blundetto: To think. When I got out of the joint, I thought an airbag was Paulie Walnuts.
      ---
Tony in therapy after smoking a big one in his SUV while Furio beats the living crap out a sad, middle-aged punk and his stubborn, iron-spined Asian wife, for not kicking enough upstairs from their brothel operation.
Melfi: How'd that make you feel?
Tony: I wished it was me in there.
Melfi: Giving the beating or taking it?
Tony thinks he has just shocked Melfi by confessing to a Jones for beating women. Game, set, and match to the unblinking, iron-spined Dr Melfi. Tony momentarily reels in speechlessness as a new respect gains a secure perch within his teflon hubris.
      ---
Tony: [to Carmela, musing on basically having incited a war with Uncle June by teasing him about his sex life on the golf course in front of his underlings] Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this.
      ---
When Adriana not-so-subtly harasses Christopher to pop the question already as a side-line to a discussion someone else's wedding preparations, during the appetizer course of a dinner for four.
Carmela: Has Anna chosen her caterer yet?
Adriana: She booked Villa de Roma.
Carmela: Good, 'cuz if you ask me, Caravaggio's is slipping.
Adriana: I heard they fired their produce guy.
Christopher: Enough! I'm so sick and tired of hearing you people talk about food, food, food. That's all anybody ever talks about is prosciutto, cheese and fucking fava beans - I'm drowning here!
Tony: [making a menacing gesture toward Christopher with knife and fork] Jesus Christ, take it easy!
Christopher: We're not even engaged yet.
Tony: When you're married, you'll understand the importance of fresh produce.
      ---
And finally, perhaps the best two-word summary of another character's eerie facial vibe in recorded history:
Tony: [to Richie Aprile] Don't give me your fucking Manson lamps. Just fucking stop it. Understand?
      ---
So there's that, from _The Sopranos_ alone. Don't even get me started on Mel Brooks or Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin.
      ---
      Bart: Are we awake?
Jim: We’re not sure. Are we…black?
      Bart: Yes we are.
Jim: Then we’re awake, but we’re very puzzled.
      ---
Jules: Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charmin' motherfuckin' pig. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm sayin'?
      ---
      - Why is America the greatest...
      - It's not the greatest country in the world, Professor. That's my answer.
      - You're saying...
      - Yes.
      - Let's talk about that ...
      - Fine. Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paycheck, but he [motioning toward right-wing climate denier] gets to hit you with it any time he wants. It doesn't cost money, it costs votes. It costs airtime and column inches. You know why people don't like liberals? Because they lose. If liberals are so fuckin' smart, how come they lose so goddamn always?
      - Hey!
      - And with a straight face you're gonna tell students that America is so star-spangled awesome that we're the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom. Japan has freedom. The U.K., France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia. Belgium has freedom! 207 sovereign states in the world, like 180 of them have freedom.
      - All right...
      - And, yeah, you, sorority girl. Just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there are some things you should know, and one of them is there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number four in labor force, and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: Number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies. Now, none of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you nonetheless are without a doubt a member of the WORST. GENERATION. EVER. So when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Yosemite?
The problem with Sorkin, however, is that his protagonists always have a quick-oat Rain Man tucked into their back pocket. This guy, for example (as played by Jeff Daniels), is a walking CIA World Fact Book.
Or maybe he's just invoking the law of 43.
I once told a beer buddy that I had just read a new study the previous day reporting that 43% of all statistics exchanged over beer are made up in the spur of the moment. He started to nod agreeably, before finally spewing his beer about 3 s later.

Jon, I want to say this, as someone from the UK, who generally doesn't care for our own sports all that much let alone yours: You orchestrate this production beautifully. God damn.
The comparisons and arguments you make, the details you go into, it's all so very well presented to even allow someone like me to follow the events, to understand the challenges and feats involved, but beyond that, the stories you tell and how you tell them are sublime. The things you focus on, the way you drive these ideas forward, the elements that you place along the way so you can keep going back to them to further build the connections you talk about, it's all masterful narrative work to tie together all the information, the incidents, the possibilties, and make it all as compelling as possible. And the music, you're so good at building suspense, anticipation and energy through when and how you use the music you've chosen for these videos. You really bring to life the highs and lows of this story.
You build up to the end of this video, having told the tales of all these great players, and reach a point where it seems we've faltered, where it seems we're destined to return to the historical mediocrity and misfortune that has plagued us, and with this all hope is lost. Then you plant the seeds of a new hope, the music swells like the darkest clouds are suddenly parting to reveal a shining light, we get a few brief glimpses and then pan over to see a new name and a new face. A hero who we can be assured will lead this team to glory, a name and a face I know I can have faith in... and I don't know why I have this creeping sensation of awe and suspense because I DON'T KNOW WHO THAT IS. As far as I'm concerned, that guy is Luke Skywalker. But because of how well you've sold this throughout this series, I'm assured that great things are to come. I absolutely can't wait to see what comes next in the story of this team I've never heard of playing a sport that I've never watched.

One of the best attributes of the juice, and what allows players to turn themselves into Soviet artillery pieces, is the fact that it helps the body heal much faster than normal. Considering the injuries that plagued Jr. all throughout his time in Cincy, and how many games he missed due to them, I find it highly, highly unlikely that he ever took a drop of the juice.

The thing that gets me about the Ichiro reveal is how it shows the iconography of baseball. You couldn't do this with football, no player has one particular stance or movement that you could identify just by one iconic part of his body. You couldn't do it with hockey, and you might be able to do it with a few players in basketball.
But baseball? You show me that arm and I know exactly who you're talking about, and there are many other players whose batting stances are so iconic, that you could just show me a part of it and I could identify them immediately.

Then again, while I've would've loved to have seen Randy Johnson go into the Hall of Fame with the Mariner's cap, there's no denying what he did in Arizona could be argued is what pretty much guaranteed he was going to the elected into the Hall after starting his career looking like he would fizzle out quickly due to a reputation of control issues.

I've seen people online suggest more than a few times, jokingly or not, that the Super Smash Bros. fighting game series should include real people as playable characters, although usually just limited to Nintendo executives; but if they were to ever do this, the *only* person I would be okay with including is Ken Griffey Jr.
He was a Nintendo mascot in the 90s with their line of in-house SNES/N64 baseball games; he's still a tremendously popular personality; he's done nothing that a squeaky-clean company like Nintendo would disapprove of; and in a series that celebrates gaming history he'd be a nice representation of the sports game genre.

I've sat at my laptop for the last 2 hours and change completely spellbound, my attention only being broken by 3 work messages which I quickly responded to, with the retelling of the backdrop of my childhood in the suburbs of Seattle out near Lake Sammamish. I remember watching Griffey's first game when I wasn't even 10 yet. I remember starting to play baseball in large part because of Griffey. I remember replicating his swing my first time swinging a bat up through when I was 18 in the late 90's when I was still playing. I remember the father & son back to back home runs. I remember the Kingdome and all the wonderful memories with my dad made there. I've watched sports for over 30 years across a number of leagues from the traditional big 4 in the US, to F1, Golf, MMA, and a host of others. Ken Griffey Jr arriving in Seattle started that journey for me, and countless other kids in the Seattle area. This series has been some of the most fantastic, descriptive, and thorough storytelling I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, let alone within the sports genre. You've far exceeded what I look for in sports journalism, and have pushed me to not just subscribe, but enable alerts which I only have for 2 other channels of my near 260 subscriptions on UA-cam. Thank you for this kind of investigative storytelling. And the bittersweet trip down memory lane of my life from the beginning of my becoming a sports fan and up through my teens and early 20's. Your effort and painstaking attention to detail is greatly appreciated.

@Harry Engel The Orioles that year were actually the better team. They had won 98 games and the their lineup was possibly even more stacked (Ripken, Alomar, Palmeiro, Baines, Anderson). While it is sad the Mariners didn't play well, it wasn't really an upset.
The Mariners with all their talent only won 90 games that year, though sadly, that would have been good for the #2 seed with modern rules but pre-set divisonal matchups existed from 1995-97 where no matter what, the AL East champ would have home field vs. the AL West champ in that year's divisional.

How can you say the 2001 Mariners are the greatest team of all time when they didn't win the World Series? The greatest team in the modern era is almost unquestionably the 1998 New York Yankees, who had 114 wins, won the World Series, then won 2 more in the next couple years, and almost won a 4th title after beating those 116 win Mariners in 2001.

To be fair, the Ken Griffey Jr. trade resulted in Mike Cameron. The Randy Johnson trade resulted in Freddy Garcia and John Halama (2 of the pitchers on the 01 team), and Carlos Guillen. The Ortiz trade was dreadful, though I'm not sure where he or Edgar would've played. But the point is that we can't just add another 14 wins because many of the key contributors to the 2001 Mariners came from those trades, though an argument could be made that the team could've been better had everyone stayed and kept production (A-Rod over Guillen, Johnson over Garcia, Griffey over Cameron).
Also, as a Mariners fan, I don't think the 2001 team is the best of all time BECAUSE winning the World Series is that important to me, because supporting a team that has never won a pennant (and also hasn't been to the playoffs since I was 4, before I even watched baseball) is really sad, and a fantastic regular season doesn't numb the pain the way a title would. That being said, if it pisses off insecure Yankees fans that have been given everything and spoiled, I'll repeat "The 2001 Mariners are the best team of all time" ad infinitum until their heads explode, because the sight would be glorious.
