Dominion is my shit. I used to play every day online, back when the free site was still up (with no pictures!). And I have most of the physical sets, all in a big custom case. The expansions really make the game. It's kinda like Magic, in that it was the granddaddy of its genre, and has grown even better over the years via constant updates. I teach new players all the time, but this game is not easy on the newcomers. I usually have to try oddball strategies for them to have any chance of winning. Thankfully I've gotten good at easing people into the more advanced tactics, like when to "green", and whether an engine deck is even optimal on a given board. It's always fun showing people "big money" or aggressive trashing for the first time. This game is a great example of "easy to learn, hard to master." If you're looking at expansions, I HIGHLY recommend Prosperity, followed by Intrigue (2nd Edition), and finally Seaside. Complex sets like Adventures, Empires, and Dark Ages are more polarizing, but I personally enjoy them. The other sets are just alright. Except Alchemy. Alchemy is hot garbage.
Prosperity and Intrigue are reaaaally hard for me to get a definitive recommendation over the other, just because both are very good sets. I'd recommend for newcomers who are figuring out their first expansion to also figure out what cards and playstyles they like, and if they want more of that. While they both cater to all playstyles to an extent, Intrigue tends to have more of a focus on combos, attacks, and versatile cards, Prosperity has a heavier focus on engines and big money.
@@boopyy Alchemy has the potion mechanic. You can buy a potion for 4 coins which can then be used to buy other cards that have the potion as a cost. Where this gets awkward is these cards often cost coin as well, so frequently you will draw your potion with not enough coin and not be able to use it (or with a lot of coin and be forced to make an awkward choice). Draw luck is a factor of the game but it's crushing in Alchemy, one player is often left fumbling while another cruises ahead and in some cases can lock them out of the game.
This is one of the few games where I think getting an expansion or two is a better deal than just adding another game to your collection. The expansions add so much customisability and replay-ability to this game. They work flawlessly with all of the established rulesets and add so much to the experience. Plus, due to the nature of Dominion, you can easily scale "how much" of an expansion you want to play just by choosing to use more or less of the expansion cards with the base game cards.
Same. I remember recommending it on his first boardgame video, when he asked for suggestions. So glad he got a copy. My favourite expansion is Intrigue.
Thank you for explaining the game succinctly at the beginning! I always have to explain the game to the newcomers. Now all I need is for somebody to help me set up and clean up...
Just a strategical tip with the Cellar card. In rough, general terms, an important strategy to playing Cellar is to fill up your hand with as many useless/bad cards as possible before playing Cellar. This way there are more cards in your hand that you're willing to discard, therefore Cellar gives you more draw. Therefore, in your example at 3:00, it would be better to play Market first, as you would have drawn into one of your Estates, then play Cellar to discard it along with however many Coppers that you're willing to riskily give away, essentially giving you an extra draw (I say 'riskily' because the cards you draw may or may not be as useful as the Copper cards, such as Victory Cards, which is why it can be important to try and keep track of what's still in your draw pile, although this is quite advanced). The order in which you play your cards in your Action Phase can make all the difference. Another benefit of digging into your draw pile for bad cards like this is that it eliminates those cards from being dead draws for you next turn. And even if the card you draw into is a good card, like another Action Card, it doesn't matter because both Market and Cellar give you more Actions so you can still potentially play it if you want to. Obviously, you generally run a risk by digging into your deck like this with a card that DOESN'T give you more Actions, like Smithy. However with cards that DO give you more Actions, there's generally no risk at all.
Something that I want to expand upon, since he only briefly touched up on it at the end; At time of writing, this game has *fifteen* expansion packs. Most of them are excellent, and are all self-contained, meaning they're each non-reliant on having anything other than the base game. Most of them introduce a mechanic (Seaside with Duration cards, Dark ages with Ruins, Nocturne with Night cards, Adventures with Tavern cards), and reiterate and improve on previous ones (Intrigue with attack and secondary effects, Dark Ages with trashing, Hinterlands with....everything pre-dark ages). If you like the base game, get a couple with mechanics that seem interesting to you!
Also, a good first expansion to get is prosperity. It’s not too confusing but it’s adds a lot to the game. All of the other expansions are like mini versions of original dominion, but prosperity is more of building on to the original game. Prosperity adds platinum, which is a higher treasure than gold, colony, which is a higher victory card than provinces, and a lot of treasure cards that have a lot of abilities you’d expect from an action card. Overall, a simple but fun expansion

I've probably played Dominion more than any other game, especially since they released an online client that I use to play with friends from college. I think the 2nd edition of the base game (shown here), but the real magic comes with the expansions. While there's a ton of them, I'd say Dark Ages and Adventures are among my favorites (the first for the variety of trashing effects, one of the most powerful effects in the game, and the second for having interesting card interactions). As for my favorite deckbuilder overall (no expansions required), I'd probably say Puzzle Strike. That game has probably the coolest win state of any game I've played, and has a good amount of depth. That said, it does have a little bit more of a learning curve, and some people find the use of "chips" (basically cardboard poker chips) instead of cards a bit fiddly. my favorite deck builder game type game is Machi Koro. I highly recommend it, its almost like monopoly but fairly different. Another game you might like is Last Night on Earth, it like a zombie rpg almost where someone controls the zombies and everyone else controls a hero. I find both highly enjoyable and would suggest them in a heartbeat.
Have you ever played Cthulhu the deck building game? The rules can be a bit vague in certain situations but get past that (and keep the faq open) and it’s the best co op deck builder I’ve ever played.
Those looking at expansions, you don't (mostly) need to buy them in any real order, so long as you have the base set or intrigue's first edition, so here are my recommendations: -*Prosperity* is my favorite. It extends the game's length by adding bigger and stronger cards, which are desirable enough to sometimes actually sell out, without being too strong. -*Alchemy* is criminally underrated. The potion mechanic adds money cards to your hand that are only useful in really specific conditions, but the small size of this set limits the number of cards you can actually use it on. One of the only sets where I've seen decks get made that play every single card they have almost every turn. -*Base set.* Not sure why I put it on the list, but it's third place. -*Hinterlands* is really weird. A few cards are way too strong, (Crossroads, Haggler,) but overall, a really solid and enjoyable set, that creates some bizarre games, while still being the easiest in the series to follow, adding no real new mechanics. -*Seaside* is more on the confusing side when it comes to sets, but the duration cards add a really neat amount of depth to the game, and much of the time the confusing cards are that way because someone had something cool in mind, not just to annoy you. Roughly as good as Hinterlands. -*Intrigue* is just like the base set but more geared towards shorter turns and attacking other players, while less so towards impressive turns and varied strategies. A very good set, but not a personal favorite. -*Empires* has some interesting mechanics, but is also where the power creep becomes a real problem. Debt is an awesome balancing measure, and the cards here are really interesting, not to mention landmarks being a cool mechanic, but the event cards are not that cool, and it's just not that fun to have one expansion dominate the game by having objectively stronger cards. -*Dark Ages* has a lot of cool ideas, which are not actually all that fun to play. By no means an awful expansion, but just never quite exciting enough to play. Roughly as good as Empires. -*Adventures* is a real mess. The power creep is staggering, and I often play as though the cards from it cost Alchemy's potions in addition to their base cost just to be able to use even the weakest ones, not to mention it's home to some of the most confusing cards in the series. Hireling in particular cannot exist without completely ending the game the instant a player reaches 6 coins on a turn, and even that's before getting into the gross, gross, reserve cards. Not a fan. I have not tried Cornucopia, Nocturne, Guilds, Renaissance, or the second editions of the original and Intrigue, but Nocturne seems fascinating. Also, Black Market, a card which is sold on its own, is not fun enough to make up for the 10 years of cleanup it adds when you're done playing.
you MUST try Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Mayhem if you haven't already! It's a nice short game for whenever some pen & paper mate arrives late (so every pnp session)
I want a really complicated card game, I think I might try magic the gathering, but I genuinely want to play a game like sungwons complicated card game skits.
Looks awesome!!! Thanks for the video! Where did you get the game?? I for sure want to play it!! I'll post it with my friends on my channel after work :) Thanks a lot!!
4:29 you could have "bought" another Copper that round. They cost 0 and in early game it's useful to have even more Copper in your deck so you don't draw a useless Estate that turn.
It's the catan of deck building games. somewhat bland and basic without much immersion but super strong gameplay that makes it approachable but also very re playable
@Artemiy Solopov: Technically, yes, but in my experience, you generally don't need more Copper than the seven you start with. They get in the way of your better Treasure cards like Silvers and Golds. Buying lots of Silver and Gold early, then buying a good trasher (like Chapel from basic, or Doctor from Guilds) to get rid of your Coppers is generally the way to go so you can draw your good Treasures. I prefer Big Money strategies, if you can't tell.

Pretty cool game!
Today I learned you were a voice actor
you MUST try Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Mayhem if you haven't already! It's a nice short game for whenever some pen & paper mate arrives late (so every pnp session)
Didn't watch the video, but came to comment that Dominion is GOAT
I fucking love this game
Have you tried spirit island?? Fantastic thematic co-op :) cheers
This game is my second favorite behind a game called Machi Koro. You should review it!
You should review ascension. It’s another deck builder that is loads of fun.
I want a really complicated card game, I think I might try magic the gathering, but I genuinely want to play a game like sungwons complicated card game skits.
Those videos are based off Magic the Gathering, so you're going in the right direction
Looks awesome!!! Thanks for the video! Where did you get the game?? I for sure want to play it!! I'll post it with my friends on my channel after work :) Thanks a lot!!
I wanna play too let me know when you get it
@@crossxmagusful I will for sure!! When are you free?
@@F4AFREE4ALL For sure!! lets play this Sunday. I'm down!
Also you should do a review on this game on your channel also! From 1 to 10 if it's worth it
@@crossxmagusful Sunday sounds perfect!!
I FUCKING LOVE DOMINION I HAVE ALL 13 EXPANSIONS
oh hey. it's my favorite game!
4:29 you could have "bought" another Copper that round. They cost 0 and in early game it's useful to have even more Copper in your deck so you don't draw a useless Estate that turn.
that's true, i mainly just wanted to focus on explaining some of the cards in the main market
Y'know... this would be just the game to have a dairy farm expansion set...
aw yes, i love dominion! :D
Yay! Dominion
Great game!
It's the catan of deck building games. somewhat bland and basic without much immersion but super strong gameplay that makes it approachable but also very re playable
Witch, village, throne room chaining was fucking busted.
great vid! looking forward to buy this game :D
Question: when you said you had +1 Buy but no treasure cards to spend, couldn't you have picked a Copper card for 0? Or am I missing something here?
@Artemiy Solopov: Technically, yes, but in my experience, you generally don't need more Copper than the seven you start with. They get in the way of your better Treasure cards like Silvers and Golds. Buying lots of Silver and Gold early, then buying a good trasher (like Chapel from basic, or Doctor from Guilds) to get rid of your Coppers is generally the way to go so you can draw your good Treasures. I prefer Big Money strategies, if you can't tell.
This is the best game of all time.
