Outstanding tutorial! I will follow the same steps to replace the U-Joints on my Astro Van...Thank you both!!
Once again Norm you did an awesome job. And taught Richard something he can use through out his life.
Funny thing - I learned the old way when my 68 Firebird dropped a u-joint in traffic. It’s a helpless feeling when the engine runs great but the car won’t go. It was a rear u joint and the drive shaft fell out on the ground
the narration was perfect 😂
Thank you , the hours I spend and hundreds of clips I record , to choose the best ones , are noticed. I appreciate the feedback.
Wow great job on this video. You definitely gained another subscriber
I definitely appreciate it ! I spontaneously did that job to help my young cousin see he had the talents to fix up his dads hand me down truck, and it worked , he’s been fixing it ever since ( sometimes with pointers ) on his own.
Thanks for the great video!
@@ChandlerBlandt thank you ! It’s an easy fix that can save money and severe damage, I lost a driveshaft when I was young in a 68 Firebird
Your the best. Thank you 🙏
@@ralphpomm4943 that’s one hell of a compliment!!!! You’re welcome , remember, if you have questions feel free to leave a message
Job well done, very informative
Thank you . My young cousin had those U joints in his truck glove compartment for quite a while and didn’t realize he could change them with simple tools
Hey Norman. Love ur channel. Perhaps you can suggest something 4 my wife's Daihatsu. It clunks when she shifts into reverse from park. The car is less than 2 or 3 years old. She does not drive very often and she is not a hard driver at all. The car was bought new from the dealer. She does set the parking brake and does step on the brake as she shifts the car into reverse. Plz help. Thank u in advance. David from Ishikawa, Japan
First, question. Is it front wheel drive ? I need to know if it has a drive shaft ( in Mazda manual called propeller shaft). I would consider checking for worn CV ( constant velocity) joints . Also check transmission fluid, for proper level, even color if it’s an automatic transmission.
@@normanpaulife Hey thank u 4 the reply. It is a Tanto and yes it is FWD. I understand what parts you suggest could be broken but since the car has very low miles should those parts have a longer lifespan? Or is it not uncommon for those parts to break so soon. Plz let me know if I may provide more 411. Thanks again my friend.
@@normanpaulife it should be under warranties. My wife is Japanese and she does not believe in fixing the car ourselves. I would if it was my car but I am not going to touch her car but I do offer.
I just would like to have a better understanding so I can let the tech know my thoughts so he does not have to waste time guessing and troubleshooting.
Why can’t every video be this informative
Thanks , I try my best to not repeat the video techniques I dislike. I treat my audience the way I want to be treated. I like to give you useful information verbally and visually for the duration of the video, in other words you could watch the video in silence and still do the job! I want a video to get to point (fast) , get the job done ( properly) and safely, and learn ( share) things that are important ( needed), and remove and dead air. And thank the audience without selling them my channel.
I continuously improve my content, my methods, no detail is too small. My narration is recorded later to reduce noise and clutter ( worthless chatter). I strive to speak clearly and concisely. It has really helped. I even watch my earlier videos to see how I can improve my next ones. I spend a great of time to make each as good as I can and next even better. I respect my audience and appreciate their opinions!!!! Thanks again
I have an issue where when I go from park to reverse, neutral and drive it has a slight jerk but it drives very smooth. Just did a drain and fill trans fluid. What can it be? I done some research and may be an engine mount but can it be a ujoint?
It’s fairly easy to test a u joint , rotate it ( the shaft) slightly in one direction to remove the slack, then slowly, carefully, rotate it the opposite direction, here you can feel how play (slop) in the joint it has. If you feel slop, if it rotates slightly before the opposite shaft turns , it’s too much. You are turning it by hand with no load , when it’s under load the difference will cause a snapping action ! This can cause it to snap and the drive shaft to come loose and whip around under the vehicle and cause severe damage. If the forward u joint breaks the shaft with plow into the road and possibly strike a man hole or sewer cover and damage the rear end.
The parts are inexpensive and the auto parts stores loan the tools ( I believe) for the job.
BY the way, I have experienced a failed U joint with drive shaft drop in my 68 Firebird !
@@normanpaulife thank you for responding but I want to know what would you diagnose my issue? Is it a bad mount? That is causing the jerk when shifting?
I have no noise when putting truck in reverse but it will not drive backwards, acts like it’s in reverse. Put truck into drive and loud clunk noise push the gas pedal about halfway barely moves 5mph…..any ideas?
Unfortunately, yes . There are a couple couple potential causes, but what you describing does not sound like U Joints . Check your brakes ! Are your emergency brakes stuck ? Does it roll in neutral? Jack the vehicle an try to rotate the wheels. Rear brakes be sure the transmission is in neutral, front brakes don’t matter UNLESS it’s a 4WD then it too needs to be neutral. If the wheels rotate , you need to check the transmission, standard or automatic? Check fluid levels, worn clutch etc
As I thought about it for a moment that sounds like classic LOW Transmission Fluid level, check the dipstick with the transmission in neutral and warmed up for the most accurate reading , but if it’s low start with half quart and add slowly. Overfilling the transmission causing foaming and that too leads to problems. I would use Lucas transmission additive it helps improve shifting if the transmission ( truck) has high mileage. Best of luck. Any further questions feel free
@@normanpaulife went to check on truck 8 hrs later and it shifted into reverse easy and drive backwards no problems, put truck in drive and shifted easy drive normal. Like there wasn’t anything wrong with. Only check engine light is on. Going to get it checked out today. Truck only has 130k miles on it. It’s a 2013 gmc dually. It has been deleted so it’s not the def situation. But I do appreciate all your advice. Also when coming back to truck, I put truck in 4wd and everything worked perfectly reverse and drive, shifted in and out easily as well. I’m wondering if it’s the “tcm”?
You are describing a more in depth problem. With a check engine light , that’s certainly the best place to start. I have seen shifter linkage become loose under the steering column cause transmission irregularities.
Thats true if you want the best job start fixing your own Stuff..
others will not put much f care. 👊👊
#hot dog muscles ! Lol. Brute force and ignorance lol omggg yup. Sounds about right
I have several other videos on Vimeo ( school assignments ) you’ll find LADY KILLERS there
This is BY FAR the ABSOLUTE BEST VIDEO that I have seen so far regarding this particular fix!!👍😁
Thanks ! My first blown U joint was a 68 Firebird, and the mechanic changed it with a bench vise and big hammer
