Ted was such an amazing and talented actor. He had a range greater than what many would have given him credit for. I personally think he was one of the best character actors of old school Hollywood.
Where did Kirk find a giant piece of bamboo growing in the middle of the LA desert? And why didn't he just build a spaceship instead and fly away from the planet in the time it took Gorn to chase him down?
And as for why he couldn't just beat it in the first place, that's because the Gorn's skin was too thick. He needed the momentum from the cannon and the concentrated force on the projectile to penetrate.
I think one reason for the popularity of Captain Kirk has to do with always coming up with something spectacular while under desperate situation. I think Search for Spock takes the cake, as he even self-destructed the Enterprise to stay alive and outwit Kruge. I love that countdown scene ... 'Speaking? Let me mear. 6...5...4... Get out! Get out of there! 3...2...' *KABOOM* :D
It was the Gorn beside those elements that they ignored as beyond human understanding. Both sides were underestimating each other despite the absolute fact of warp drives, deep space, etc. Totally dumb plot. Rubber suits similar to Godzilla. 😅😅
Well, the Gorns were rightfully angry because of an illegal attack on one of the outposts that killed many Gorns. But, Kirk promised peace talks with the Gorn colony in a gesture of good will and civility.
He couldn't just escape because the aliens were forcing them to fight. If he tried to run, the Gorn would just keep following him until he eventually ran out of energy. Or the aliens might force their paths to cross. I'm not sure just how much they could manipulate. Not to mention the Gorn doesn't know where he is and has to spend time looking for him.
I think I always loved this one because we finally got a real alien creature battling Kirk to enjoy. I would have loved an episode with the Enterprise crew battling dozens of these things.
Unfortunately for a 1960's TV show budget, they could only afford what obviously is a stuntman in a rubber suit. The suit was probably heavy and hot, and couldn't allow the guy in it much freedom of movement. Which probably explains the slow and limited movements of the "Gorn".
In the short story, "The Red Roller" on which this ep is based, the human protagonist concludes that the utterly alien Roller -- though clumsy and somewhat slow -- will leverage its much greater mass, toughness, and endurance to eventually defeat him. For one thing, the (contrived) environment is very hot and dry and he's tiring fast and almost sun-blind as a result, whereas the Roller seems better-adapted to those conditions. The human feels himself a "dead man walking" -- until he hits upon the game-changer the planet offers. Remember, the Gorn have interstellar capability, so they at least held their own in fights against somebody. Advantage Gorn here.

The Gorn was probably executed upon return to his ship just like Stalin used to do with returned captive soldiers. Kirk probably had a nice evening with Yeoman Rand and any other Enterprise woman he wanted.
The Gorn's big mistake was removing the boulder from Kirk's leg before going in for the kill (not shown here). That allowed Kirk to free himself and move out of the way.
Kirk may have also used the vines (if strong enough) to go around the gorn and tied to a boulder to pull him down and then Kirk could have smashed a nice size rock on his head.
lol Yeah...that would have been inventive :) The Gorn's booby-trap was ingenious...which makes his stupid boulder-removing blunder even more head-scratching.
