- A "stealth" steam-powered photo freight charter was held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Strasburg Rail Road, in Strasburg, PA. The stars of the show of this private/not-publicly-announced charter were former Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 #475 and former Great Western 2-10-0 #90, pulling a mostly day-long mixed photo freight train along the Strasburg's 4.5 miles of track. About half of the trip (give or take) was run as a double-header, while other parts of the day featured either #90 (while #475 was pulling the day's scheduled passenger trains) or #475 (as #90 was put away for the night) in solo action. Included is footage of a meet at Leaman Place/Paradise, PA between #90 and an Amtrak "Keystone Service" train, as well as shots from early morning, early evening, and everywhere in between. Enjoy this look at Steam from Sunrise to Sunset at Strasburg!
Wow how unusual Strasburg learned how to open the throttle past 5 notches and blow the whistle?? Impressive! Nice to see ole Strasburg get back to it's roots. It sure was fun back in the day even on a regular tourist trip!
always great to see charters like this wish i could have been out there!
It was a good one!!

Fantastic video Jim. Absolutely loved it!
Thank you very much!!
I'm not a major steam fan, but this video is magnificent ! Your shots are beautifully framed and composed. Well Done !
Thank you very much!!
Excellent video Jim 👍😉 These are my two favourite locomotives to see in action at Strasburg and I really like to make a visit to the railroad in the near future. I like to see Southern 2-8-2 No.4501 from Tennessee Valley Railroad to visit Strasburg to join Nos.90 & 475 on a railfan event.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Man I wish I could’ve seen this.
Thanks!
Great vid! Big fan of the SRR, especially #475.
Thank you very much!!
Big Jim out does themselves! The colors, wow.
Thank you very much!!
Why was it private? Being able to shoot this pair without people walking in front of the camera was a huge bonus. I hardly saw anybody around. How did they mange to keep it so private?
The charter organizer/operator made it a condition upon hearing about it/signing up, that all participants could not disclose that this was going on - so to keep it a secret from the public and non-paying people.
Great Job! Stunning to see these two beauties double heading!
Thank you very much! It was indeed fantastic to see it in person!
Good luck with the rebuild #475!
It's a bit of a shame Strasburg only does doubleheaders for photo charters and the occasional revenue freight these days.
Yeah, but if they see no operational/financial benefit...aside from occasionally just having some fun...I can understand why.
@@Bigjimvideo yep, its understandable.
Anyone else notice that the 475 and the 90 are about the same size? Also, who wishes the 90 still had the really long smokebox? Finally, who wishes that the 475 had a N&W long valve?
Yup
90 has the same size smoke box as she did in 1924. If you mean that the smokebox used to be painted white, then yes.
I don’t know how you would increase the valve gear length on 475 without redesigning the frame, boiler, and maybe even the wheel arrangement. Looks fine the way it is IMO.
Awesome, what camera were you using?
My Sony HD Handycam (that I've been using for years).
Wow Awesome video!
Thank you!!
Big Jim Video Productions you’re welcome
Any reason why this was a private photo charter??
The charter organizer/operator wished to keep it quiet and not publish the fact that one was going on, and as a condition of hearing about it/signing up, the participants had to keep it that way as well.
@@Bigjimvideo Ah, makes sense. Thank you!
wait i thought 475 wasn't operational this year?
Nah, it's been out and about this summer.
Fantastic video! RailfanTube approves! Lol
LOL Thank you very much!!
Lol you're welcome!
DOGGO
Most dogs I've ever seen on a photo charter!!
I didn’t even get to pet them ;-;
Instead of reproducing a production failure (T1) they should be rebuilding the three other existing N&W Ms. there’s one more M, a M1 and I think an M2
The4014Gamer ForTheWin The T1 wasn’t a failure. It’s large size and wheel slip were some downsides, but overall, they were fine locomotives.
Nice steam engine
Thanks!
Yeah is a same I love it now bye
