- Every time I get into a new relationship, my partner winds up asking me the question “what is your love language?” My answers have varied over the years when answering off the top of my head, so for Valentine’s Day I decided to sit down and take the test to find out exactly what my heart is really looking for. I’ve actually found it’s pretty common to have people have 2 different love languages - their giving one and receiving one. For example, I show love through Acts of Service, but prefer to receive Quality Time. My husband shows love through Gifts, but prefers receiving Physical Touch. And even though none of those match up, understanding that about each other is the key to our success.

I'm not surprised that Words of Affirmation is the highest or that Physical Touch is the lowest (I don't react well to physical affection, in all honesty)

About hugging a patient: I had a physical therapist once, he tried very hard to take away the issues I had in my neck. After 6 weeks, 2 treatments a week, he finally succeeded. He jumped, screamed "YES!!!" And gave me a big hug! Absolutely nothing wrong with that, and a very genuine emotion from someone who doubted that it would work, but tried anyway because he wanted to help. From that treatment on I was his patient for 10 years until his retirement.
As long as the patient is ok with it then it is definitely great! As long as he can read people right. Congratulations!!

Yeah I work with elderly and I hug them often. Some want a good morning hug and others want a godnight hug. Some want a hug when they are sad and others want a hug when they are happy. There are alot of situations during a day when someone is in need of a hug. Im glad to hear dr. Mike say he can hug a patient. Most of doctors i seen just stare at a screen, and usually avoid something basic as a eyecontact.

I love getting to know to love languages. In my relationship it helped a lot because we had completely different love languages. We actively try to do more of what the other one loves. We also made a list of activities and rated them on how important they are for us to do. That gave us a lot of insight 😊
I love that! That would create so many fun date ideas. You could switch who gets to choose the activity every week. Sounds super fun, definitely stealing that for the future 🤗

Seeing that a lot of people don't understand the love language of gifts and things of that nature, just thought I shed some personal light on that. An old boyfriend of mine loved to buy me things, flowers, food, gifts, you name it. When I asked him why he tries to buy me, he got so heartbroken that I thought that. He explained that he spends his time working very hard for very little money, so the way he sees it his money is his time and hardwork. He's wanting to give me hours of his hardwork, labor, and putting up with job stress just to show me he's thinking of me. I think it's beautiful when you see it that way. Anyways
if i think about this the other way where im the giver, it def makes sense.
Giving good gifts also means putting thought into it and rembering details about the person.

10:19 it's not really confusing. Gary Chapman, who wrote the five love languages book, says that some people learn to love in the way their parent/parents showed love to them while growing up. So in some cases you learn to live in the love language of your parent or parents even though it may not be your primary love language.

I always called it "showing love" and "recieving love" because there is a disconnect. One of my missionary companions would give me gifts all the time to show that she cared, and she did best when I gave her words of affirmation. Of course, if you're like me and it's physical contact, that's just the best way to show me affection period.

I love the whole go out of your way to relieve pressure. I did that for my husband when he got his job as a mailman. I quit my job to stay at home with the kids so he didn’t have extra stuff to do on top of crazy work hours. ❤❤❤
I’m a psychologist and I’ve looked into this for couples therapy.
Love languages are mostly so you understand how you like being showed love and your partner knows what to do.
That’s why your partner should do it too so you know how they like being showed love.
It is important for both to understand each other what they prefer to show and receive affection or love.
True. I like giving gifts to the people I love because I like to see them happy when they're opening them. I like getting gifts to an extent, but I like those kinds of gifts that make you emotional lol.. I've been with a couple of men who are the complete opposite and yet didn't seem to understand me, obviously it didn't work out.
Shots fired indeed. I started doing yarn crafts, including crochet, as a child. I went on to become a professional artist, an art teacher, and heavily educated in cultural anthropology. Guess what? I still crochet.
I just took the test myself. Here was what I got in order from most to least:

I tried that quiz and yeah, came out at 30% Physical touch, 27% quality time and 20% words of affirmation. I always knew I like being touchy and need attention :D I'm not the person to receive gifts, although I'd enjoy simple ones like flowers, but I love to give gifts.

Life struggles: Valentine’s Day by myself cause my boyfriend has a medicine exam tomorrow… I did the test and had similar results, except the results were 32% quality time, 29% physical touch, 23% acts of service, 13% words of affirmation and 3% receiving gifts. I’ve had a doctor-boyfriend for three years and I still work out his comfort in being open without being scared. Every second is worth it. I hope you all get the lucky chance to have that someone, even Dr.Mike deserves it too. I wonder if he should have my boyfriend in a woman version 😂❤️🔥.
My husband and I have completely different love languages, I express my love by gift giving. But I think in my mind it’s not necessarily about the gift more about the thought that the person was thinking about me. It could be something as simple of picking up my favorite drink or snack from the store and surprising me with it.
I like seeing people's love languages, and then doing what they do for others: so giving gifts - I'll find the ones your little inner nerd would lose its mind over. Cause sometimes we have to learn to be loved and accept that it's okay to receive in certain ways. If you give physical touch but are sensitive physically yourself, your partner can learn your body and touch you the right ways that it doesn't rub the wrong way. etc. That's love to me, bringing in a dimension that you didn't expect, for someone to show you that you can accept love in many ways and enjoy it but also to give you love in the way your brain normally perceives love to present itself.

I have one of the love-languages books (got at a yard sale). Your "giving" love language CAN be different than your "receiving" love language. I enjoy giving gifts as well, but have gotten some real "duds" as gifts. While gifts from my students are rare, and therefore precious, I don't think receiving gifts is my top love language.

Being a highly emotionally sensitive and physically communicative person that statement makes sense to me. Many people use physical touch with a clear agenda. Such as seeking sex without being aware that is what they are doing. This statement I understand to be clearifying that the person is aware of their motivations and is intentional about the actions and what it means. Or to put it another way touch is a form of communication. In any communication misunderstanding is undesirable, touch without awareness of one's own intent can create misunderstanding. A tangible example of innocent touch communication that is consistent with one's intent, such as giving a child a hug to show love for them.
