Whenever I play this game I have to make a real effort to not cry when I face the Colossi, they're such magnificent creatures and in the end their sacrifice was for such a misguided purpose.
Wander seems to me like he might be a hunter, not of monsters but of rabbits and deer. Those should go down to a single well-aimed arrow, and while his skills with the bow and Agro are the only thing really exceptional about him, they are by leaps and bounds more than other people. I doubt he does a ton of actual running since he would mostly be ambushing his prey and riding his horse to wherever he needs to go.
1:16 Her name is Agro. 7:05 You might have figured it out already, but you can pray near the corpses of the colossi for something special. There are several places not on the way to any colossus in particular but just off the beaten path with some beautiful scenery. You can jump off Agro to reach some higher ledges that would otherwise be impossible to reach (try tapping or holding different combinations of buttons while on Agro for interesting results).
@@KnightedSilverWolf #1 I was being deliberately vague because it's nice to not have every bit of discovery in a game be explicitly told to you in a comment section, especially when the whole video is about the joy of discovering the little things in games. #2 Almost every button on the controller (and many combinations of buttons) has a unique action while on Agro, and there are enough advanced techniques that they made an entire achievement out of it in the remaster that many players miss even across multiple playthroughs. I don't really want to get into it here out of respect for Pretzel and leaving some things for him to uncover on his own, but there is a decades-long history of players using techniques with Agro to discover interesting out-of-bounds areas in the game, among other things.
I used to explore the map of this game for hours after school shortly after it came out, there wasn't anything else at the time that really captured the same feeling of realistic freedom. I've always explored this world in the same way you did, just taking it all in
I always assumed the colossi just hang around doing nothing before you encounter, seeing as they're seemingly not actually animals but rather some type of animated earth. They fall apart into rocks and dirt when they die, and their blood doesn't really seem to be blood at all, so I just figured they don't really need food or water or anything like that.
I'm really glad that you're covering SotC, such a perfect game for your world tour series. Every video I've watched about the game until now has mentioned that the Forbidden Land, while beautiful, wants nothing to do with you. It takes ages to get from one point of interest to another, and the only outright living things are you, the rare white tailed lizards, and the plantlife. Not to mention how much abandoned architecture is around, how the land is littered with enormus structures that have history you'll never know. But contrary to all that, you manage to show the coziness and tranquility of the Forbidden Land, how peaceful and simple it is despite everything. That's what I love about this channel.
You know you can dive to move around water faster. Right? Also, at 16:24 I think the word you're looking for is Colosseum. Regardless, great video! Thank you so much for keeping this game alive. As a fan of it, I greatly appreciate it.
You'd be surprised that the "pail" can be many things... It looks more like The Initiation Well in Portugal than a the Colosseum. But in reality it's just what Dormin calls it, a Pail.
I tried it years later to see what the hubub was and really don't like this game, but it did teach me that I just don't like big empty open world games very much. I can see why people can appreciate the isolation and loneliness though and I do love the actual boss battle mechanics.
When "Could You Survive SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS" ? The eighth arena is a point of attrition among true fans, there's a very interesting video called "exploring the pail in shadow of the colossus " that goes really deep about the architectural influences of it. This video was a joy to watch, I did it two times in a row! Great presentation and narration, love the comical moment at the waterfall :)
I loved finding and climbing each tree and using the bow to collect the fruit, and eating all the lizard tails to increase his stamina and health bars.
I think my summer car is another game that does this well, lots and lots of roads but it really feels like a country town in 1995, the atmosphere might seem like it's a jank game but I'm telling you it's the most immersive thing I've played in some time.
My god man....I can build most of the engine by memory....doesn't mean I'll have the car running, BUT the tires and the shit box car with no keys will be mine in EVERY playthrough
Love your videos, man. There really is something magical about games from the PS2 era. Maybe it's just the nostalgia speaking, but I love how many of these games look. The graphics were just advanced enough to have character models that looked human, with 3d faces and hands that weren't cubes with fused fingers. Yet not advanced enough to have that much detail on these faces, and the environments were either incredibly detailed small rooms or big empty areas so the console wouldn't explode (And some stuff in between of course). I wish we would get more games inspired by the aesthetics of PS2 instead of PS1.
this feels like a game that could only exist in that generation. the empty space isn't just an artistic choice, it is a necessity to portray such a big world in that hardware. and the way environments can look immersive without the need for intrusive clues
tbh i wish elden ring's world was more like this. big empty space with the occasional point of interest. at times it feels too cluttered and jam-packed with overused enemies. the emptiness really does a good job at creating the feel of a post-apocalyptic world and maybe fast travel should only be available at points of grace, and torrent should be more limited. i want to feel stranded in the world at times - something that elden ring never made me feel because i could just ride my horse away from any open-world problem.
