To be honest, your plug-in is the one that invited me transition from other PKM to Obsidian. I am sticking with Obsidian thanks 80% to your efforts and contributions to this community.
I've only recently discovered Excalidraw in Obsidian, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorite plugins. Thanks for putting so much work and time into it. ❤❤
The man.. the legend, back at it again the man that keeps on giving.. he is like No mans Sky but he never had a low point, just gold update after gold update.
For an year I thought Excalidraw was just for drawing tool until I started using for the past 2 weeks and now I am hooked. Thank you Zsolt for the update, I have been binge watching your video for the past one week. Even though the drag and drop link to using ctrl + shift is not working for now but web embed is a great alternative.
Edit: Zsolt's dedication for the community is unbelievable. He addressed random feedback from the comment and released a new update within 24 hours.
re. drag and drop... what OS are you using? I tested on windows and macOS, plus android and iOS
@@VisualPKM Sorry I forgot to mention. Windows 11. If I drag and drop any link--say a youtube video like you showed in the video, holding ctrl+shift just put the thumbnail of the video on a frame in excalidraw(while ctrl or shift alone just put text on the board) . It's ok anyway, web embed is a alternative workaround. Thanks again for the update.

Jaw dropping! You are incrementally bringing the Fediverse to Obsidian! So much diverse media in one place at a time, regardless of its origins. And one can interact with it seamlessly
Simply no words can express how amazing this update is! My use case of your plugin is to visualize CS/SWE concepts, as well as learning in-and-outs of a framework that I'm working with. To be honest, back in the day I was never big on taking notes and would usually just half-ass them and more often than not never revisit, even so with the abundance of note taking software out there. I've been using Obsidian for about couple of months and was lucky enough to discover your plugin from the get go. Never have I thought to catch myself thinking how excited I am to visualize some concept I don't yet understand and for the first time in a long while I find myself actually getting back to my notes.
Zsolt you are THE MAN! This is such an unbelievable feature set! I have a crappy old laptop (wich I love), and everytime someone sees me taking notes, they are perplexed by how my computer can do all this magic. And it makes me smile every time. That is how good your work is

And your nudge to e.g. also embed ChatGPT conversation is gold. This way I can connect now really different traces that created the path to a final note. Really exceptional great work!!

I have been studying many weeks to choose my pkm system (I am actually using Notion that I love to gather things but I think it's not "my" system because I don't use databases and need something more visual). In these mouths many tools are bringing to birth right to bring more visual skill to pkm systems (Heptabase, Scrintal, Affine, Anytype...) which I find amazing, but then you come in and bring steoroids to Obsidian keeping this ("old") consistent and robust tool to compete with newborn stuff. Amazing. YOU are probably what will make me choose and stick with Obsidian.

I love ExcaliDraw. Thanks to this tool, I can think visually while comfortably and pleasantly making changes as I wish. A piece of paper doesn't offer such possibilities, and I prefer ExcaliDraw
100% This is exactly my design principle, and why I didn't find other "illustration tools" helpful. They become static like paper, but Excalidraw drawings in Obsidian are ever changing, just as my thoughts.

Hey Zolt is there a way to render text in excalidraw like it would be displayed in a normal note without embedding notes as iFrames?
I want to use bold, italics and highlighting and i dont want to use a lot of time to make more text fields than i need and changing the color of each.
Thank you very much! I would like to quickly import a block from a local Markdown document using mode. Currently, the can import the entire document and select headings, but it cannot select specific blocks, especially those within tips. Additionally, dragging blocks directly from the editor page still results in a text format.
since the most recent release you can zoom in the document to a block or header section. The other I don't think I plan to change. Dragging text outside the markdown document will create an Excalidraw text element, that is intentional.
If I drop 1 drawing into another drawing. Is there a way to edit the link of that drawing to point to another drawing.
My use case is that I create "base" drawings and I have drawings that point to other drawings. I want to be able to copy a drawing and then edit those pointers to point to the other copys. I like to edit these copies without ruining the "base" drawings. These "pointers" are s.
Can I use the Publish feature in Obsidian to publish Excalidraw?

I don't think vendor specific pens will have special support. These usually require special SDK packages which underline platform independence. As for the pen lag, I also don't see significant improvement. Excalidraw is first and foremost a desktop illustration tool, handwriting and mobile use are secondary
I really want to use excalidraw but the danwirintg on the iPad with the Apple Pencil lags way too much..
maybe If I can insert apple notes into excalidraw and have them sync when I change them.
Also having lag issues with galaxy S8, where every other sentence it skips couple of letters when handwriting. I have made a donation to zsolt bevause he is delivery so much value. Hoping that they will address the handwriting issue because that will tie everything together nicely and makes me stay off paper! :)

Are the keyboard modifiers configurable? Usually all the ctrl+... combinations on Windows/Linux transfer to cmd+... in Mac, but I think the drag feature is using ctrl+shift in both environments (Windows and Mac)
They are not configurable at this time. Also the Mac has lots of limitations as to which keys can be custom configured in which situation. I try to help with the tooltip so you can experiment with key combinations until you find the one you are looking for. That is what I do as I use both Mac and Windows, which makes things really confusing as an end user (not just in Excalidraw, but in general)
@@VisualPKM Exactly! I also think about the confusing part when I comment about the modifiers (I think I'm the only one here 😆). Me, personally, I'm forced to use a Mac now and I've modified the keys to not break my flow (cmd is ctrl for me)
One tricky thing is to modify keys when interacting with the mouse
Now I am confused, when should I use canvas, and when should I use excalidraw. Can you please share in what scenario do you use canvas?

I am not the right person to talk about Canvas. Apart from a few test drives I haven't used it much as I missed the drawing features available in Excalidraw. That said I can imagine canvas may have a performance advantage over Excalidraw. This is because it is more tightly integrated with Obsidian being a native app, and because there is a very professional team developing Obsidian including Canvas, vs. the one man show I provide as a hobby to work on the Excalidraw plugin...
Amazing! Does OCR work on s and pdf?
If you import PDFs using the PDF button, not the iFrame button pages will be imported as images.
If the PDF has normal (selectable text) you can use the PDF Page Text to Clipboard script from the script library (github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/blob/master/ea-scripts/PDF%20Page%20Text%20to%20Clipboard.md).
If the PDF is a scanned image, then you can select the imported page of the PDF and run the command palette "Excalidraw: OCR: Grab text from freedraw scribble and pictures to clipboard".
In both cases the text will be added to your clipboard which you can paste where ever...
Dude you are awesome! What a great product and list of new features. BTW, the way you say 'video' (three syllables) sounds like you are saying something more like 'viddoe' [two syllables]. I feel like you maybe able to get that "eee" sound to come out of your mouth if you work at it because your English is great. You do as you like though!

drag and drop from the frame to the canvas would be nice. Will check if that is security wise possible. There are many security limitations around frames - understandably.
Does this work if you place an to include a set of s?
Best way to find out is to try... I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work, but also I don't fully understand the use case.

This can be easily implemented with a custom script. You could modify this script changing `await ea.addImage(0,0,file);` to `await ea.ea.addEmbeddable(0,0,400,600,null,file);`

When inserting a file from the vault, is there a way to prevent scrolling _beyond_ the chosen Heading level? For example, I have a "Dashboard" file in my vault that contains various snippets of data that I use to populate a canvas. I've not played with Excalidraw before, so I thought that replicating my Dashboard might be a good way to test the functionality. It seems that "endless scroll" thru the inserted markdown file is the default/only option? Can this be disabled or limited to chosen heading only somehow?
That was my purpose as well, but I haven't found a technical solution to this yet. to the best of my knowledge Canvas also does not support this... I was checking canvas to see if I can "steel" their solution approach.
@@VisualPKM canvas definitely does it, because that's how I've got my dashboard setup. I add a card to the canvas, then right click and select "Restrict to Heading" or something similar

@@PaulSnedden I can't find the "restric to heading" command on canvas. All I can do is create a new note and reference the ![[note#section]]. But that you cannot edit in place
@@PaulSnedden :) that is one way of looking at it. The other, is if I don't find it, you'll not going to get the feature you are after 😉
How can I share this with people out of obsidian (...). I'm thinking in an education environment. regards.
- You can export your drawing as image and share the image with your students (note embedded websites and markdown pages will not e visible in the generated image).
- You can copy all the elements to Excalidarw.com and share that drawing as a link (some of the embeds e.g. youtube will work on Excalidraw.com, others will not)
- You can collaborate with your students as explained here: ua-cam.com/video/QKnQgSjJVuc/v-deo.htmlsi=Rdtd-vIEk-8DyTZt (This is similar to the previous approach)
- You could store your Obsidian Vault on GitHub and have your students install Obsidian and install the Vault from GitHub (This will give your students full features, but requires more setup time)
- A feature I am working on currently is to support Obsidian Publish, then you can publish your website
Dear Zsolt, I copy and paste a file or url into "Excalidraw" but it always auto play. May I know any method to stop all the current and future auto play for the media files that I pasted
Yes, this is a known issue if you embed media from outside your Vault, but from your local device. I can't figure out how to prevent webview from playing. Will try to pick this issue up again, to see if I can find a solution on the next attempt.

I remember wrong, the url paste is ok. Hoppping to solve to prevent the auto play of the local media files.
Would be cool to save the current frame view as an image/md to use as reference later and anotate in it.
There are all sort of security blockers that stand in the way. I couldn't find a technical solution to make this happen. If someone shows me how this can be done with s and Electron webviews, I'd be happy to implement it.

Hi, Uncle, I love it! And I have a problem when I open excalidraw file. It is spend a long time to open. It shows "Loading scene...".
this is with all your files, or just a specific file. There was an error earlier when Excalidraw got stuck on loading scene, but I thought I fixed it.
Does the loading scene ever stop for the impacted file? did you try restarting Obsidian to see if the problem persists?
@@VisualPKM I'm just complaining that it takes some time to open files every time I startup. Currently, it takes about 4 seconds to open the template, but it only takes 2 seconds to open other Excellidraw files.
@@VisualPKM I performed a test using a new file library with the same configuration and number of scripts. However, when opening the template file, it only took 1 second in the new library. Could it be that there are too many files in the file library that I am using? I repeated the test and found that the faster the number of scripts I use, the slower the opening speed of the files.
A Feature Recommendation:
I wish there was a feature where I can import a contents of an Obsidian Canvas to a new Excalidraw canvas.
I want to port some important canvases I have to Excalidraw entirely!
This seems relatively easy to do... I'll look at the data structure to see how it can be done

That depends on your needs. Excalidraw with all the features takes a bit of time to learn. Canvas is very simple to use, but limited in functionality.
@@VisualPKM my need was just about using à whiteboard with notes inside, links to youtube or video if needed, to put pdf, to put images, like a mind map with note. I discovered Malinote for this but obsidian seems really huge.
Does back links and connection works?
You mean connecting two links with an arrow in the scene? That does not work. But adding links to exvalidraw will show up in outgoing and back links.

This is an Obsidian.md plugin. You cannot host this on a server.
