Agreed! This is a totally underrated and wonderful film - start to finish. This scene - done by Vernal Bagneris is incredible on so many levels - pure joy to watch.
That's an astonishing performance by Vernel Bagneris, BTW. This movie never found its audience but I've remembered it ever since it came out - it really pushed the envelope to surrealism combined with utter realism. It was nominated for 3 Oscars and 3 Golden Globes. Bernadette Peters won a GG for Best Motion Picture Actress - Comedy/Musical.
No puedo decir que esta película me guste demasiado. Me sobrepasa esa mezcla extraña de drama y comedia. Pero los números musicales son todos geniales y éste es uno de los que más me gusta. No me canso de verlo.
@skyangel1965 I think you had it in three words - "this dark film." You're right that American audiences were not prepared - but it's the whole thing: Dennis potter's brilliant and brutal vision. The casting, the timing of the release, or any other factors, were mere details. I think Steve Martin does make the part work; the casting is excellent across the board, it's a great film. The audience just wasn't ready for it.
From the Wiki: "Pennies from Heaven" is a 1936 American popular song with music by Arthur Johnston and words by Johnny Burke. It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1936 film of the same name. Thanks for asking....did not recognize that as Bing.
I think that I found it on Spotify: open.spotify.com/track/1V0TZwjj5CNtDw8s1hTcT5 (it is funny, as it is sufficiently clearer so as to sound different....but I think that this is the source)
This one of the howlin' worst examples of box office miscasting. No one was prepared to see Steve Martin be a meanie. That, and the fact this dark film was released just before Christmas - Christmas, if you can believe it - and it's no wonder it bombed. Now imagine the original - Bob Hoskins - in the part. Hoskins is an actor no one likes at first , but who grows on you. He would have made the part work.

Mil gracias por este clásico y ese hermoso mensaje, desde Venezuela, saludos.
Great scene, beautifully done. Much better than in the original TV series.

Sheer brilliance!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this and have played it over andover.
Wonderful surreal scene - original version by Arthur Tracy - the Street Singer
I'll check on that and get back to you. there are so many versions. Bing Crosby's wasn't too shabby either.

TOTALLY BRILLIANT 10 out of 10
lol, me too!
Maybe it´s because Dennis Potter created both.
Anyone have the full movie or know where to view it? I really wanna see this movie, but can't find it anywhere. =\
You can rent it at pretty much any movie place I'd think. But, be warned. It is kind of a unpleasant movie and pretty depressing.
Who is the singing voice? It does not seem to be the voice of Vernel Bagneris.

It's not Bing. It's Arthur Tracy's version.

Lois Prima sings it better
