About the binding, the easiest way to see if it s sewn is to try to find the center of a folded page set. Those sets are called signatures, an in their middle you can clearly see the thread, if it's there
Love your channel, keep it going please. It educated me on all paper quality, font size, illustrations, etc etc. It guided me to purchase an entire collection of deluxe and all the box sets.
As a bookseller and book collector, I love your videos so dearly. This one was so beautiful to watch, as I too enjoy every little bit of a book, from the paper quality to the binding. But even moreso, because this is Tolkien. 💙💚
I have these editions at home, if they are the ones bound in Italy, they are sewn-binding. If they are the ones bound in China, they are glued. So your editions are sewn. But the paper quality looks great to me too.
I'm still working my way through The History of Middle-Earth series-- I just finished vol. 5 of 12 (The Lost Road and other Tales)-- and reading these have definitely made me even more appreciative of Tolkien's skill at verse. I fell in love with his poem "Kortirion Amid the Trees", of which several versions are included in The Lost Tales-- just a lovely piece of poetry about nostalgia and longing for a distant past (which is quite a central theme in throughout the Professor's writings). Anyway, I think HC did a really beautiful job with the design of these volumes-- and I appreciate the lack of dust jackets, especially!
Very nice set, just got the 2024 lotr blue leather set...it's the best set yet!! I really like the look and feel and art, probably better than the big red with gold edging deluxe edition from a few years ago...I'm very impressed with the high end Tolkien deluxe books, and sets.
Great review. I love the books and the level of work by the authors is incredible. But wish they had dustwrappers so I can protect them during use as I do with all my other Tolkien collection of trade hardbacks. They are beautiful though, it is just that I want them to stay that way as I read them regularly, possibly a bit each day. Keep up the good work!
I get what you meaning about the omission of dust jackets. But honestly I don’t really mind. The covers have a nice glossy feel to them which makes them great just the way they are.
I am planning to get my set as soon as I am able to. Also I fully agree with you on not wanting to pick up another new set of lotr. If I do in the near future, it would be for my son so he can have his own set. 💚
That’s shocking to be honest. In 5 years’ time we’ll be getting the 75th anniversary edition for sure. I’m all for collecting these lovely books, but this 70th edition, while it looks absolutely wonderful, feels unnecessary.
Could also be perfect binding like he said (which ironically means glued bindning, which is less than perfect). I get so sad when something gets a pseudo-deluxe treatment, and then they skip out on the two most important things: paper quality and binding.
Hey James! Do you have 2024 edition of 'The Maps of Middle-earth: From Númenor and Beleriand to Wilderland and Middle-earth' by HarperCollins. It'd be quite interesting to see what's inside. Thank you!
Great video James. I will say as an avid reader and collector. I would love to get this. But unless I unload one of my many Middle Earth collections. I have like 4 different runs. But I love all of them. Lol. I Don t see me getting this. If I only did Novels sure. This would be in my basket right now but I also do Graphic Novel and Manga. Again great video and yes they look magnificent.
I have to say this. No one will care, but it's been killing me. You look exactly like my brother. Like a spitting image, 1:1. It's so uncanny. It's like stumbling upon a channel where my brother is putting on an accent and is obsessed with Tolkien's legendarium. But, I do want to add that I appreciate your channel.
Which edition of the History of Middle Earth by Christopher Tolkien do you recommend, considering the recent onslaught by Harper which messed up the font size?
I have at heart the 90s paperback editions with John Howe’s artwork on the cover. They’re easy to read and keep around 🙂 as far as collecting goes, I haven’t yet seen upclose the new hardback box set releases but they look quite something. They maintain the look of the John Howe paperback ones, but are hardback 😅
Thanks for the informative video, yet regarding the poetry box set I'm on the fence and as of now can't make up my mind whether to buy it or not. I also agree with you that the price of the forthcoming new LOTR box set is ludicrously high. So I'll definitely pass on it.
I hope this message finds you well! I'm on the lookout for a nice hardback edition of The Silmarillion and would greatly appreciate your recommendations. Ideally, I’m looking for an illustrated edition with superior page quality that features maps and additional enhancements. Do you have any suggestions? Additionally, I’m curious about your thoughts on the Alan Lee illustrated box set of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I’ve heard great things about this collection; in your opinion, how does it compare to other editions on the market? Have you had any sort of problems with it? Would you consider it the best three-volume set of The Lord of the Rings? I would love to hear your insights! Thank you for your help!
Hi there! For The Silmarillion I would go with the 2022 deluxe hardback edition. It’s got all the content and illustrations (by Tolkien though, and some of which are just sketches). But other than that it’s absolutely wonderful (even appearance-wise) As for the Alan Lee box set, to me it’s one of the best editions out there. Absolutely top notch 👍
@@brewingbooks Oh that's a shame. It is on sale for Amazon US. It seems that people have said that the paper quality is a substantial amount better than the Red Deluxe Edition, I am considering ordering it as 325 is a steep price. But 245 is a lot more manageable.
I just got my copy of this. A tad disappointed by the production quality. The boxcover was oversized (like at least a sixteenth of an inch on all sides too large, so the books just fall out and do not snugly fit in the case). The work itself is amazing, as usual, but it seems as of late that these deluxe and collectible edition sets have been much lower in production quality overall, with a ton more mistakes than usual.
@@brewingbooks I appreciate the tight fits mostly because I have butter fingers and am playing a constant game with myself on whether I end up dropping one of these books while getting it out lmfao
Waiting for my box to arrive tomorrow.... Hope the box will arrive intact. As for the another new edition of The Lord of the Rings, I decided against buying it.
I see … well, unless you’re either a keen poetry reader or a Tolkien completist, I would skip on this for the time being. It’s primarily a scholarly work with all the commentary and notes after each poem.
Hi I am your subscriber from Türkiye I want buy the Lord of the Rings Grey cover edition (The flexible one). It is cheap I know but nowadays we can't buy anything from abroad over the 30 euros because of a new law. Can you help me for this problem ? Maybe you can share a website or anything . I would be very happy if you help me
Hi there! Most of my books were purchased via online retailers such as Amazon, Blackwell’s or book depository - but perhaps you could consider second hand books such eBay? You could get good prices for a decent edition that way🙂
I am a simple guy, my man uploads a video of Tolkien books, I press like before watching.
Same here 😅😊
You’re the best mate 👏

Hey there, thanks! That’s exactly what I looked for but couldn’t find. Assuming then it is glued
Bro you are the best Tolkien bookshelf UA-camr❤ thank you
Please review the 70th anniversary edition!! I will watch your video a million times to cover the cost 😩
Thanks! Perhaps someday I will 😅

Love that you're posting more regularly! You got me into Tolkien collecting almost 2 years ago, and I'm still hooked. Love to see your content!
Oh cheers! Thank you so much 🙂 I try to post as often as real life always one to do so 😅

Thanks so much James for the excellent review of this 3 volume set. What a treasure!
Thank you for your kind words 🙂
Great to see you again! Been waiting for a review of this set. 😊🎉
Thank you! 😃
I watched this through twice for the sheer pleasure of it. Thanks
Wow! Thank you sir 🙂

I hope so too!
Such a beautiful set. Great video as always.
Many thanks 😃
Love your Tolkien book videos 👌 You got me in to deluxe book appreciation 👍
Thank you so much!
I can't unsee the mismatched colors on the spines which is holding me back buying this set 😭
It’s not as bad as it looks. There’s an extremely faint difference with the third volume (and only when it catches the light at a particular angle)
I am planning to get my set as soon as I am able to. Also I fully agree with you on not wanting to pick up another new set of lotr. If I do in the near future, it would be for my son so he can have his own set. 💚
Right on! I wish you a swift acquisition of this set then 😃

Thank you! Cheers!
I just discovered your channel. It’s amazing.
Thanks so much! And you’re amazing for your lovely comment 🙂
You can get the 70th LOTR from Harper Collin’s right now for $260. Still expensive but cheaper than anywhere else I can find.
That’s shocking to be honest. In 5 years’ time we’ll be getting the 75th anniversary edition for sure. I’m all for collecting these lovely books, but this 70th edition, while it looks absolutely wonderful, feels unnecessary.

@@roxroe6731 the binding is sewn and then glued in addition to the sewn signatures for added strength/stability

I understand your dilemma! It can be hard to let go of cherished sets, but sometimes - to make room for new ones - that’s what you have to do 🙂
I'm surprised you didn't mention The Complaint of Mim the Dwarf.
Mîm is straight spitting bars in that complaint, easily top 5 complaints in history of Beleriand
You’re right 😅 I guess I was so excited to go through the unboxing and try to take it all in, that I missed that completely! Thanks for the heads up 👍
Mîm is someone you feel honored how poetically he hates you.
Another great video. Thanks James!
Any plans on doing a review on the newly released HoME box sets??
Many thanks 🙂 I haven’t purchased the new HoME editions yet - still on the fence about them.
Finally something worth publishing. And yeah totally agree about the 70th edition
It is essentially three deluxe editions in one shot
Well said!
That’s true! 👍
Beautiful set. Will you be reviewing the upcoming 70th Anniversary LOTR set with new artwork from Alan Lee?
Not at this stage … to pricey! 😭
I just got mine and man I love them
That’s fantastic! 😃
Are there any differences (particularly in terms of size) between the HarperCollins and William Morrow editions?
Hi there, I’m afraid I don’t have a definitive answer as I don’t own the Morrow editions. But I can do some digging on that 👍

Question, is Bilbo’s Last Song included in this?
Yes it is 🙂 Poem 127 on Volume 2

Does it contain the first draft of Tom Bombadil’s song, written with crayon on a napkin when Tolkien was 0,5 years old?
Yes it does! And comes with a replica feather that inspired Bombadil’s hat too! 😂
Finally! 😂
Speaking of Tolkien! Do you prefer the standard edition of Hobbit or the deluxe edition one (1/3 leather bound)?
I’d say the deluxe edition holds a preference in my mind 😄
With regards to what I think about it? We’ll see what Father Christmas brings for Christmas 🤩
😁😁
The price is killing me. I’ll save it for my birthday maybe.
It’s quite steep, but for the amount of new content and the genuine value of a new Tolkien set, it’s actually quite worth it.
