- I am very excited this week as we have another youtube review exclusive!
The new Mecatecno Dragonfly e-bike will be released shortly and this video may shock you! It's forward-thinking and entirely out of the box! I couldn't help but be surprised and shocked at the weight and power. One step closer to the future maybe?
Let's find out!
This is TRIALTUBE!
My husband just bought one and loves it! At 65, he is still riding expert lines!
Amazing!! That’s what we like to hear!!
Nice vid, thanks Danny! I'm on my second EM and this looks like an interesting alternative. In theory manufacturers can keep releasing new power maps/updates as they develop experience and receive feedback (like Tesla does) - the hardware doesn't change much. EM have really pushed you into buying new bikes to benefit from annual development - when a few plug in parts and a software update would really improve the older models. The electric bikes are already expensive, it would be nice if they stayed current a bit longer! Hope Mecatecno take this on board.
I agree, but this is the capitalist dream after all..
I really like the look of that bike, they have actually taken advantage of the difference in electric power instead of just trying to make a normal bike with the motor swapped out for electric.
Correct! A completely new approach!
Respect to the owner of Mecatechno appearing on your channel. Not an easy time to develop an electric bike I reckon. We’re at the peak of combustion technology and the infancy of electric.
Yeah he is a good guy and they are great people!
As an engineer what you put is exactly correct , we still goto a lot do to refine electric further. Look how TT zero developed in a few years and we still learning .
@@pauldean8638 this makes me very happy to know! Rated by a engineer!
@@TrialTube am in undated by Sur Ron's and other Motocross type as not a lot repair them by me . Am an electrical/ mech engineer who understands the advances in technology , things are moving forward fast . 30 years ago we think electric milk float or forklift and 5mph , 20 years ago we went from 5 mph to 180 mph in the TT zero . I think we advancing if frame materials and production also . 30 years ago me and mates had a bike taken out of production because we where able to stress magnesium frames with ease and they snapped with ease as soon as you put weight on the front end . How they ever passed testing was shocking ha ha . Love the video , good to get a insight of torsion for people who don't really know about it
@@pauldean8638 what an awesome reply and thank you!!
Mecatecno was smart to have you review this. I will be forced to go electric here in a year or two. And, I would have never considered this bike before watching this. Now, I would. Good on you, Danny!!
That’s an incredible compliment and thank you!!
I have to say it’s the first electric bike I would be interested in !
It’s a head turner
Brilliant video as always 👌 Looks like decent new competition to EM. Competition is always good as it helps with innovation and progression. We love our 2022 EM pure race but we would love to compare with this on a video. Think it looks amazing and the innovation sounds spot on for first e trial bike. 👌
Best part was the interview. The passion for his product is apparent.
Bike is pretty trick!
Thanks for sharing DB!
You are welcome and he is a super genuine guy! The best kind of Trialist!
Good thing #1.69 is the ability to ride trials in town! I have been waiting for this type of "Q"uiet bike for years. Now the building of a personal trials course in town begins!
That’s the way!
Are you mine? 😜 as a bicycle trials rider this is the most appealing Moto I've seen.
Of course!
Received well ! I'd have one , that looks like the future really well thought out. Enjoyed this review Danny
Cheers bud!
Thanks Danny.. looks like a very interesting alternative. I like the idea of the lighter weight, and I think if you owned one you would get used to the power delivery. The factory could probably bring out firmware options that modified the power delivery anyway.
They have, watch the later video…also on the channel
This is a much nicer looking bike than the other electric one.
Well if you think so 👍
I like your comentary style. You should do well in this field and recomend you branch out with other items for review if possible. The way you clarified Jordi's expensive comment was right on. you know that would get people going and got in front of it. You seem to give an honest yet fair assesment. all anyone can ask.
Thank you! I really appreciate it! Unlike the main trials industry. They don’t seem to like honesty…or professionalism lol
Hmm, I was really excited to see this review as I had thought the dragonfly was supposed to have a gearbox but…..no. That’s the number 1 problem for me with the EM. Cool to see another actual electric trials bike. However I won’t be buying another one without a gearbox. Just kills the skill development and techniques like loading the flywheel and riding on the clutch to get lift too much.
I totally agree
Slowly, the market for electric motorcycles is on the way to being the next present, and I am not saying this because its means of propulsion is electric, it is the only way to evolve the present of dynamic Trial, 60 kilos is a great breath of fresh air to the current Trial , it is clear that there are still many details to resolve until they are as optimal as the current petrol ones in some respects in others they are surpassed by the electric ones I applaud Jordi Mila for his dedication and for the wonderful project with the Mecatecno dragon fly, it is precisely what the trial currently needs at a technological level, now is the moment that (Honda Montesa) (Ktm GasGas) Trrs beta and vertigo to show their electric trials motorcycles, we must look ahead and not stand still
I'm waiting to see if Yamaha will release their latest bike. Probably more when than if but the tech is moving really fast.
We all wish they would
Thanks for a great review of an exciting new addition to the trials world. I watched the em bikes at the ssdt. They are impressive but this looks more exciting as it captures the conventional trials look, low slung with c of g where it should be. I remember the original dragonfly and sky walker with Louis Gallach. Again a trend setter. Great stuff and entertaining
Cheers Chris and that’s the bikes I remember too so a nice nod to the past!
Great bike!!!! love it, as an old montesa cota 348 owner, this one moves me, cheers
Heard that GAS is coming with theirs … that’s just only the beginning of a new area … as well as 20 years ago, the bikes weight were high, now the new styles are coming. In 10 years, the trial discipline won’t be the same, great for public, great for style, but always the same feedback from some: « this is not trial anymore, it’s freestyle » ! Things are evolving, it requires new generations to take benefit of it ! Thanks DB to illuminate some challengers, hope the price tag won’t be the brake to this evolution.
I'm really looking forward for Gas Gas to releasing a brand new TXT electric! Did you hear about a specific date? 2023? ♻🔋👏💪🔝❤
Really nice video and test as always thanks. One comment though, about not getting on with the power delivery, it would have been great to let everyone know what the different power levels are like, and which one you were not getting on with. I imagine it was the Oh my god setting you were using 😂
That could of been the case but I always rode it in a comparative setting to my 300.
But it just felt a little delayed in delivery! But I am sure there are to be even more updates! Maybe a mapping issue.
My boy has a mecatecno good to see them making some adult stuff. Bikes that is!
They are cool!
Most beautiful Trial ever!
It’s mega
Seems like they have the chassis and suspension well sorted but the mapping/power delivery needs work. Not a bad start though and maybe it will push em into some more drastic chassis mods going forward.
Nowt wrong with a bit of competition!
Nice bike, it looks like the the rear brake master cylinder protrudes a bit to much, perhaps
Yeah we felt that a little too but it didn’t seem to hinder!
Nice review!
I have been one of the first (maybe the first) in Italy to trust electric Trial bike (Electric Motion brand) few years ago from my friends that is Italian importer of the brand.
I used that model for 2 years exploring all patterns I did before with Montesa and many others more.
In 2019 I have also bought the first E-Pure and I liked it... UNTIL the engine SWITCHED OFF at the top of a 1.5mt rock !
It was 24 of December and I think I had no injuries because of a miracle !
Indeed I fall back dragged down by the bike and with my back slammend on the ground and for 30 minutes I had no idea of where I was... completely confused!
I thought many times to that problem: ELECTRIC BIKES ARE REALLY DANGEROUS!!
When a combustion bike switch off... you have some few seconds earing the engine working bad.
Moreover the rear wheel stops a bit gradually and is braked by the engine stop.
These make the difference between a dramatic fall or a simple jump away from the obstacle.
In my experience it has happened to me with my Montesa and so I can assure the danger is really less !
The matter with rear wheel free as the motor is stopped generate problems and danger also in many other situations:
- engine brake lack (almost totally)
- standing the bike on a mountain pattern in pendency
- stopping in the middle of any obstacle for errors
Once again I assert TODAY ELECTRIC TRIAL BIKES ARE REALLY DANGEROUS!!
That the reason I come back to my first love Montesa.
Unfortunately the brands has performance and marketing on their mind... and security will become important only after someone will have a serious injury in the world.
I hope Mecatecno owner in this video can read this post to take in account what I have said and I'm really opened to be contacted to help understanding these matters.
Moreover as I find a bike solving these matters I will be glad to by it !
Glad you're ok and I fully sympathise, having crashed a car with the latest techno wizadry when it did completely the opposite of what was needed.
You are a lucky person. I had an experience very similar to the one you had when the electric motor turned off. The same thing happened to me, but with a petrol motorcycle it went out of gear. I did not have time to react or to pray and At a height of approximately 1.75m knocking me out, I couldn't go to work for a week. how you can see are Incidents that occur in this sport that is not why I am going to stop riding whether it is petrol or electric
@@robertoweinberg It happens to me in latest '80 with Fantic 125 and recently to my son with an old Beta Rev3 125.
One reason I'm still follower of Montesa is for the gear box affordability!
In 23 years with 300 h/year of usage (controlled by engine time counter) it has NEVER happened... till now😅!
Yes You are right also with endothermic bike there are 2 bad events comaparable with Electric switch off:
- gear out
- chain breaking
I have thought about these matters in the weeks after my injury... but these events are really more rare than Electric engine switch off OR LACK OF TORQUE caused by the partial consumption of the battery!
Moreover chain breaking usually happens at the BOTTOM of the obstacle as you impact with him (it happens in the same obstacle I mentioned few years before, but with no injuries at all).
The Electric Bike performance changes continuously during battery usage and this is another evaluation risk... as 5 minutes after you have made an obstacle you have a different TORQUE available... and sometimes you can't reach the top of the obstacle (it happens to me too!).
At some poit this translate in engine SWITCHED OFF because of ESC battery saving (LiPo cannot be completely discharged).
All these problems are daily matters you can experiment... and you have no clear symptoms to prevent them.
A friend of mine has recently bought an Electric bike, even if I had advised him, and has daily switch off and consequently falls, mainly if you use bike for hard mountain pattern trips.
@@montesamapping Last year I have a spark plug who fouled on top of a 1,5 m steep obstacle and I fall on my back too !! 20 minutes seat for recovery and nothing more but I can tell you that the PETROL BIKES ARE DANGEROUS !!!!!! An accident will be always an accident !!Working actually in an electric trial bike prototype with renown make (can't say more !!)
@@fredericchastro4263 yes you are true!
As usual "no pain no gain", BUT the probability of a bad event in my experience is 10 to 1 in favour of petrol engine.
It's 40 years I practise Trial on mountain and training on obstacles with totally 1 year of electric bike.
Because of some bike failure I had 1 report with my old Fantic 30 years ago, 2 reports of chain break (one with a Future Trial 325cc prototype, a beast!), 1 fuel finish: 4 cases in 40 years, only 1 (old Fantic) really dangerous.
With Electric Motion I had 3 switch off in 3 months (old model was less powerful, but in my opinion less dangerous, in fact I still own it), 1 of them really dangerous.
The rate is dramatically different!
And my friend in 2 months had a plethora of switch off and many falls (maybe he uses the bike in a really summer hot season but the situation is dramatic).
Spiffy music and editing Danny 💯
Thank I am alway available for peoples work projects too 😜
You say the bike is different looking but it's not so different to not look familiar. Still recognisable as a trials bike, still loads of space around the frame to move about. Looks good
Aye that’s true!!!
@@TrialTube great review by the way and good on you to keep an open mind on it. Enjoyed watching you wrap your head around using the clutch less.
Good to see more options coming to market.
Few details missing from the review, but I guess its still a work in progress ?
What’s missing and will try and find them out for ya!
@@TrialTube Does it have linkages? No other bike without them at the moment. What's the quality of the finish? I think when bikes are this weird putting the datasheet in the vid description would be nice.
@@TrialTube Actual weight, battery duration, cost.
Good review , enjoyed that ! .
The weight will be a massive plus for kids .wanting to move up .
For me the one massive plus is being able to go past dog walkers and local worthies without getting grief .
11 grand did you say ? You could get two brand new Betas for that money .
That’s very true! Thanks for the support
yep I have to lean way further back on the EM over the Vertigo - I live just across the road from the American developer Dale - super nice chap and knows his stuff - I am sure that bike will be a hit

@@edmtb1603 really appreciate it man and the goal is 10K which is a big deal. (As a trials only channel).
The look definitely grows on you. I was looking forward to you doing this review. Definitely would like to see it up close when it makes it here to the US. First thing I noticed was how noisy and clanky it was versus the EM. I didn’t think you looked as comfortable on it over the EM.
It is a lot lighter and therefore a little twitchy. Sometimes weight give stability!
I noticed the same. Lot's of rattling sounds, like loose parts. Love my EM, so hoping Mecatecno makes for some good, price lowering, competition. All that ground clearance sure looks nice, compared to the EM though!
@@DarrellShannon the ground clearance is the key feature for sure!
Damn. I want one. Would become a content reviewer just for one. Worked for a bike bike company. But P bikes n such. Super nice human powered bikes. These look fantastic!
They are a great little machine!
@@TrialTube Im honestly afraid to look at the price. I could look for. Just dont want to know lol Thanks for the
Good review. I'd be keen to know how this bike handles the mud.
Me too, but Spain doesn’t have a lot of that lol
Danny the Dragonfly is very alluring!
I have been riding and racing (mostly Motocross)for over 50 yrs now.
After watching some of you EM reviews and now watching this Dragonfly review
I am hooked on giving trials a go!!
The Dragonfly has captured my curiosity and I am pursuing the accusation of one!
Here in the USA the first bunch of Dragonflys are scheduled to hit our shores in April of this year
2023. I am on the list. I will obviously be a total beginner at this discipline. However the pricing is very similar to the EM epure race. My question is for a new old guy (63 and still racing motocross) to this discipline at 6’4” and 208 lbs which might be the better choice the Dragonfly or the EM epure race?
Most of my riding will be about 400 meters from my house at a park with a seasonal creekbed
What an incredible comment and great to hear I have been able to inspire you to join the trials community!! This is the real purpose of TrialTube to inspire new people to join the sport!! I am very happy to hear this indeed!
When it comes down to a bike to ride from a power to weight ratio requirement of the pilot. The Dragonfly has a higher power output (feels like). Whereas the EM is a little more tried and tested (from a sale perspective). Both bike will do you right. So go with what you want in this case. If you fancy the Dragonfly, then go for it!
i suppose with the digital mapping and stuff, it can facilitate factory re -maps over the tinternet ??, if it doesn't, that would be cool (as Bevis and Butthead used to say)
I think there is still so much to come from these guys!
excellent review what a cool bike, if l had to give it a negitive comment it would be the sound it makes and that's it, the rest is so cool different but right.
I am not sure how the could change it?
When I first saw this I thought it looked very much like a push bike! I think something like this would definitely appeal to push bike trials riders
Maybe it would help them cross the threshold a little more often?
Any idea when they may become available in the UK and who's likely to import them? Great review thanks.
Jury’s out yet mate!
Beautiful. A dream!
It’s a bit of a beast!
Good review, it looks a difficult bike to ride. Does it have the 'tick over' like the EM, I couldn't hear it on the video, it seemed to be a worthy update for the EM. Maybe the light weight and space age design might swing it for sales
There is a tick-over function and the bike has vastly improved since I rode this one! We have some awesome content coming up for this very soon!!!
Digs you in the leg ? Maybe because that is the Jotagas rear guard.
the base plate is not flat... It is directed upwards
Why does it need to be flat?
@@TrialTube flat one is more stable in case plate touches the rock, would think.
It would be great a comparison with E.M.! ♻🔋👏💪🔝❤
Wouldn’t that be nice!
With that big gap you can add more power!
Cool the owner cared enough about his company to see how another rider rates his bike. And after the review find a way to redo the rear fender because it's too sharp. The tester rides gas powered bikes and it's normal that he will have to get use to how the power is used compared to a gas powered bike.
Exactly they really care!!
I've got a '74 rl 250 and I like having a seat. Not nearly on same level as new bikes
It’s true, having a seat is a lovely feeling!
When it should be available to order? Any price leak? I'm owner of 2022 EM Epure ,I love it,but want this one also!!!Thanks
Jury’s out there bud contact them direct and keep up in their socials
Not sure as yet!
Hey Danny , while I'm not convinced as of now electric is the clean future it is promised to be... I can see the usefulness for bikes like this for people in urban area.
My question is how does the bike do when holding pressure and then trying to set the front down gently. Undoubtedly some of this may be poor technique on my part, but I found the 2021? ( non idle model) EM Race to be a bit hard to predict when the front was up high and you rolled the power back on. I'd either not get enough power and the bike would essential" bog" down or I'd get past that early low rpm weakness and the bike would snap to life and want to loop out. I am sure better clutch control and throttle management would of made a huge difference. But it was a quick test ride and I am so used to my Vertigo it just felt weird and hard to control in that scenario. Otherwise it wasn't a bad bike except for the "not a reiger" R16V shock that bike had.
Honestly all the electric bikes need to be ridden separately from the combustion versions. They are a completely different animal for sure. I think if you only rode the electric then after time it would be a natural feeling. But right now I won’t be swapping.
Oh also on this bike that rear brake mc has me a bit concerned. Looks like it's hanging out there in a place a inconvenient rock could smack in the event of a unfortunately timed 5.
Well I thought that as well but the bike is already a lot slimmer than a normal trials bike and the cylinder is more tucked away due to this but I agree!
I feel having ev trials that will do 60klmh , trying to get bottom end torque without over reving and spitting you off , would be achievable with more rpm reduction at front sprocket output then a larger rear sprocket to lower the gearing , In theory ev is going from 3rd gear on take-off back to 1st in a flash need to smoove out so more controllable, 2 speed gearbox would fix that low an high and not sure on throttle feel but I always say a stiffer throttle feel helps too on ev bikes..
Cool vid love it
Great episode loved it keep them coming lol sweating me balls off lmao
I was! Bloody roasting!
Well Danny I like it! A little disconcerting that power delivery is not to your liking. Does that mean its for the masses or the elites? Am I to understand that the clutch is more about disengaging the motor than engaging?
It’s just a weird feeling that you have to get used too.
@@TrialTube - "Weird" compared to gas bike presumably. However, "weird" compared to the Electric Motion, as well? Can you elaborate? Power delivery too fast, or aggressive?
@@DarrellShannon it’s “kind of a delayed power” but then it come in strong so maybe a mapping thing?
Looks cool. Now if I can get it for $8500 US.....😂😂😂
Good luck you can do it!
Jorge Gongalez saying 'let's party' surely steals the show in this vid.
Never know who is next!
Great review Danny, how does it compare to Electric Motion?
There is the question, I am not sure if the brands go head to head
@@TrialTube - Well, that is the question that current EM owners, or potential electric buyers, want to know the answer to! 😀 You have ridden them both, and are our goto honest review source. Come on, and spill the beans!!!
@@DarrellShannon they are like chalk and cheese. What one is missing the other one has and vice versa. It’s to soon to make the verdict honestly!
@@TrialTube - Going to presume that my current EM is cheese then, as it tastes a bit better than chalk. I like the unique look of the Mecatecno. Hopefully it is a hit.
Lovely looking bike but not sure about all the mechanical banging and clunking sounds, a bit off putting making you think something is always about to fall off. These sounds are probably there in an an internal combustion engine bike but the exhaust sound probably drowns them out.
You are 100% right both the electric bikes have these noises regardless of brand. It on a combustion machine the noises go un-noticed!
@@TrialTube I think on a long trial over the moors you'd be constantly looking behind you to see if anything has fallen of 😂😂
@@Only-a-Guess we did a huge excursion on the morning of this shoot all the way in the mountains outside Barca and it was a lot tougher than “the moors” it was like a World Cup Downhill in some sections and it smashed it! Awesome work tbh
Without combustion there is no moving in my ❤️😢
I know the feeling but it went well over the mountains and I stay neutral!
Lots of pluses on the bike although there's a reason why manufacturers keep their bike around the same weight, what's the minimum weight to ride in a FIM competition? For serious Trials riding though how do you sump on a log without sliding backwards?
I know what you mean and you can sump but it is a little weird…
not a big market for such Ebike..good luck to the company
Exactly but what a machine!
How’s it compare to the PURE? Looks more like a standard Trials bike for sure. Pricing estimate?
I never actually found out about the pricing as may change per country
Does it run on Windows, Linux or OSX? (great review as always - mate!)
I hope it gets an update!
What's the range like? I've got a epure race 2022, is it similar?
It had a huge range we rode a massive excursion in the morning!
The EM looks more professional i think
👍👍
So they dropped the gearbox that the earlier model had? Why didn't you mentioned the rear suspension doesn't has linkage? That looks like a big change over other brands. I think that will bring more load to the shock? Did I hear you saying less than 60kg? That IS light! But I don't think it has a flywheel? Hence no tickover. The mapping switch (and controller) appears to be the same like 'that comparative brand'. Since it's very easy to flip over an electric trial, I'm wonder how flexible the rear mudguard is?
Ok,
Rear mudguard - very flexible
No gearbox - not sure why they didn’t go with that.
No flywheel - the others don’t have either and run off the clutch. Essentially wearing it all the time.
Mapping switch is a purchasable part I imagine.
👍
@@TrialTube A powerfull electricmotor doesn't need a gearbox, less parts to break, no false neutrals ;-).
EM race does has a flywheel, and together ith the clutch you use the inertia to launch the bike. Also with the tickover I found it more stable.
@@tv175s3 well next time I will fact check 🤣
But thanks for the comments and honestly with people without the flywheel the power delivery of the EM is still sub par to the combustion bikes
@@TrialTube Interesting bike. I'm a beginner with an EM and would consider the Dragonfly purely on ground clearance alone, it catches on everything! Can't wait to see what the Gas Gas is like. Also interesting what you say about the power delivery, I use my clutch a lot
@@bexupnorth the electric bikes a lot more responsive (in a smooth capacity) when you “don’t” use the clutch

This is just a trials bike. What's special about it. It's like every electric trials bike.
It’s completely different to the others..
Interesting. In what way are you thinking it's like all the other electric trials bikes? Weight, power, design, innovation, looks? And, which manufacturers' machines do you think it's so alike? @@NPMTrialsVideo great comment! The one above is truly Mis-guided
You make lots of efforts to hide that the fork and rear suspensions are junk....
The suspension was fine, and light. Have you ridden one? The m4 fork is pretty good to be honest. The rear shock is an ohlins. (They have a long industry of being terrible right?) 😂
@@TrialTube It do not change the fact that the fork you struggle with and that the rear suspension is not set properly. The rear look to hard and impulse poorly and the fork is too soft and impulse poorly. You just make it look good with your skils.

I agree entirely. Sounds like a rattley box of parts jangling around.
Trust me, I own a montesa 301 300cc, I absolutely love it, for its power and its sound.
With a programmable control unit I tutned it into a roket!
