Just found your channel. As a ex dairyman and now beef farmer in Derbyshire this is a refreshing change to see genuine feedback and honesty in farming.. Great video. 💯👍💯👍
Are they sold in pens as opposed to rings, because it doesn’t matter quite so much how fit they are? So they won’t need to be inspected as thoroughly, and do not need to be seen running around?
@@oppamaclare The luck penny in Ireland was at the old fair day before marts started. Pedigree sellers at those sales got paid in Guineas back then, no idea today.
This is the first time I have seen sheep being auction by pence per kilo (as opposed to pounds per sheep) Is this standard for lambs destined for the butcher?
Hi Rose this year costs per head are approx £70 as I’ve managed to reduce staff costs , especially mineral bucket use as well as creep and 30 more lambs on last year. Last year it was £95ish per head
Breakfast looked fantastic 😋. I'm going to try peanut butter and jelly pancakes 🥞🤔 this morning. Was that your family's horse in the background? Interesting to see the sales in the pens instead of the ring. Glad you were pleased with your decisions. Liked the hoody at the end. 😉
It's always gambling in farming will. We just have to take what we get and I can't see them getting dearer for a few weeks more cos alot of lambs be ready for slaughter at this time. When the lambs are ready to go your better to sell them.

Thank you so much mark. Great to see someone just down the road tuning in
Your sheep are looking great!
Worth going just for breakfast! nice video, I bet the banter among the farmers was interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, the breakfasts are lush!
Spot on.
Well done - good video
Thank you
Good video Will lamb prices have collapsed here in Ni too we've some ready but think I'll wait and see glad I didn't creep or buy much fertilizer 👍

Hi Andy, i think its to do with buyers been able to handle to sheep to see how fit they are
At 5:59 what were you holding up and why? Was it to identify you as the seller?
So I was holding up luck money. It’s a tradition that sellers will give a small amount of “luck” to buyers
@@CowleyHillFarm Oh OK. You'd see that here in Ireland too, but I've only ever seen it at pedigree cattle sales. I don't ever go to sheep sales.
@@CowleyHillFarm luck money for fat sheep?! There can't be much go wrong between the market and the abbatoir.
Only a pound or 2

Just wondering how much dos it cost to rear a sheep?
The overhead this last year was £73 per head
So do you tend to get more money if a lamb goes at dead weight?
In general yes
This is the first time I have seen sheep being auction by pence per kilo (as opposed to pounds per sheep)
Is this standard for lambs destined for the butcher?
Yep so this is standard for lambs going to the butchers
1st time I’ve seen it sold like that - all our fats and stores in southwest Uk sold live weight per head no matter who’s buying
It must be an area thing as all the markets round by us are like that
Thumbs up !
Thank you
So how much are you making per lamb once you’ve taken your feed costs out ??

Too right they’re costing extra money and they’re only really ready once
Ever thought about trying to sell them as food, not production.
