Thank you, just found your site and subscribed. I totally agree with the craziness of our society planting these huge lawns and spending hours of their life time hours mowing them. We only have so many life hours in each of our lives and I don't want to waste my life doing that when I could use that time to be more productive no matter what we choose to do with it. How did we become so obsessed with grass in this country????

Why be rude about it? One sign of being educated is being able to preset a different viewpoint with diplomacy. People who sound educated also tend to be more persuasive.
Potatoes actually do provide most of what you need-it’s pretty fascinating when you research it.
I’d be sure to grow beans & peas as well as leafy greens.
In a survival situation, potatoes are one of the top crops and have kept many cultures alive during times of famine.

To anyone reading this a year later, I wouldn't worry too much about exact spacing. "Disperse gardening" is when you kind of let your garden run a little bit wild and overgrow. Just throw some potato sprouts into the soil and let them grow. I have two pepper plants growing right on top of each other right now (I waited too long to separate them) and they're doing just fine.

What I do in the hot summer months with russet potatoes is grow them in a huge 55 gallon trash can.
1, get a large plastic CHEAP trash can and pop drainage holes in the bottom.
2, cut a fist sized square at the base.
3, stick a brick there to block it up.
4, put potatoes in the bottom and cover with dirt.
    5, add water.
Within days you'll notice potato 'eyes' poping out. As the plants grow up cover with more dirt and water about once heavily a week or until soil is dry.
The results are quite astonishing because russet potatoes are not only tough as all hell they're disease resistant and thrive in poor soil! I got potatoes so big I couldn't even pull them out!

    • @GainingDespair
      @GainingDespair 4 місяці тому

Size doesn't matter much as long as there is a good surface area of holes.
If you only have small bits make many, if you have larger spade bits you can get away with fewer. Try to do as many as you can within reason without sacrificing the structural integrity of the bottom. Also consider adding a few holes on the outer edge near the bottom about 1-2 inches off the bottom.
From past experience even with very well draining media the bottom 2 inches tend to be extra wet, I've tried raising them off the ground with 2x4's for better drainage but that didn't help a ton. Either way improving airflow will help that area and reduce the risk of rot.

He's just giving an example. Peat moss is expensive. So if poor you can put a layer of rotting straw or grass at bottom, then light conpost or cheap potting mix, potatoes, and then just put more compost and your favorite fertilizer (I use banana peels and a fish slurry I make from where I went fishing). Depends on kind of potato as to whether you want to let it grow and then add more compost or soil later as he mentions

Coming to you a little late, but shouldn't be a problem. Just add more dirt or dig up and plant a few inches deeper. Anything underground turns into roots, so you will be fine.
In the case of a container like what he says, you actually WANT to start at the bottom, then add soil as the leaves start coming up. This gets a DEEP root system throughout the ENTIRE bucket. Anywhere that roots grow, you will get potatoes, as potatoes, by definition, are part of the root system underground. The idea is to have a bucket full of potatoes from just the few cut sections that he started with.

Can someone confirm if you hill Yukon golds or not? I’ve read that they only grow one set of tubes and will not grow more no matter how much you hill it.

You can, but it depends on the climate, in colder climates there is a difference between determinant/indeterminate but in hot climates like mine zone 9b you can hill all types and they will produce, just not as heavily.
I've had Yukon Golds grow tubers up the stem but they have all been much smaller than those at the base of the plant.

How do you know when the potato is ready to eat. Very new here :)

If you’ve bought seed potatoes then check bag for how long it takes before harvest otherwise it’s typically 80-100 days

Should 45 degree avg nightly temps be aimed for around expected harvest time? Because in Texas, there aren't 60 days straight of 45F weather. Like in the fall for instance, I could START them when the avg nightly temps are 45F-ish (november), but by the time they're to finish, it'd be much colder. If I finish them in November, then I'd have to start them when the avg nightly temps are around 70F. Shame, I want to start now with some potatoes I have but the avg nightly temps are 77F

He just means coming out of winter, wait until the temp is at least 45F at night or they'll freeze. They should be fine in warmer temps as long as they aren't getting completely blasted by heat and sun through the day. If it's pretty hot, just keep an eye on them in case they need some shade or more frequent watering.

I’m in central Calif and some nights during winter get in 40’s. Wondering since they’re in a bucket if I could just put them in the garage at night and then outside in warm sun all day.
