not that i'm not proud of her and i think she's amazing. I've been supporting her from day 1, but this was the first song for me to learn on the guitar too, and knew how to play it within a week as well, together with some other songs that had the same chords. the chords are pretty basic

You notice that she is not just singing the song or pretending to be like someone else. She incorporates her emotions and her personality along with physical movement that adds Dynamics and depth. Beginners often look stiff and robotic as they appear to struggle to achieve perfection, causing their performance to disconnect from the Listener. Grace, on the other hand, has no trouble expressing herself, having no problem or concern adding her own flare. She looks totally at ease at what she's doing, giving the impression that she wrote this song. She wasn't taught to do this, she's a Natural. That is what people see in her, she connects with the listener.
I notice she changed the melody and rhythm a bit from the original. I've been listening to a lot of other excellent covers of A Team - they all copy the original beautiful melody and steady rhythm. Grace's version is unique and has a haunting feel.

You nailed it ED. I and my family have been obsessed, in a good way, ever since hearing her audition on AGT. Over the next three performances, it became evident that she is honing her songwriting skills way beyond her years.
When she hits "it's too cold to go outside" you can really hear how special her voice is. I am amazed at her ability to capture that dusky cocktail lounge singer sound and soul. Incredible.

The thing I like is that she actually looks like a 13 year old without the heavy makeup and revealing clothes and pure talent.
She has a beautiful, classic look. When I saw her, I thought of Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Ear Ring." She would be the classic model I would look for if I was making an oil portrait. She is young, but she has this old soul look, like she stepped out of Europe from 300 years ago.

Just listened to Birdy's version. Prefer Grace's. Grace seems to hit it better emotionally. Plus, there's something about Birdy's version that's not as straight foward as Grace's. There's a weird vibrato going on with Birdy or some sort of goofy electronic enhancement with her vocals. Whatever it is, it's irritating.
Just listened to Birdy's live version. It's really nice but really different :). Obviously much more complex and perhaps more typically played like a ballad. Birdy has a very particular voice as does Grace. I like both.
Im 44 and a musician . Heavy metal /rock mainly. When i watched this young lady perform , she had me in tears. She definantly has an impact on people. Im glad too have seen her and i like her music very much. WAY TO GO KIDO !!!

I'm probably going to sound like a total dickhead saying this, but if this had you in tears, then I think you've probably got some emotional instability due to depression or psychosis or some other issue. The song and the performance is ok, but it shouldn't be enough to make someone cry, unless they're just waiting to cry because of some sort of traumatic issue.

I've been following Grace since AGT. I still don't quite understand it. She affects me in a way no other artist ever has. I'm 45 and sometimes I feel silly for following every little thing she does. I've never been the hardcore fan kind of person.
And this cover. I don't get it either. I mean I love so many of her covers, but this one just has me coming back to listen over and over. I was glad to see in the comments that I'm not the only one.
I feel nearly the same and I'm a lot older than you. This cover in particular shows how she accents her delivery in a way that says, "You really ought to listen to this." She keeps the listener on the edge of his seat, wanting more. But she has many other strengths besides this.

Her voice actually sounds like she's got a tumour on her vocal cords, and yet despite that she hits all the notes. It's a very unusual voice, but she knows how to use it. I love Grace. ♥

When they first put it up I came back every day. Put it on loop once I learned how. I come less often now, but at least every other week I have another listen. I'll never tire of it. I had never heard the song before she covered it, and I've tried to listen to the original a couple of times since, but I have no interest in it. Just this.
Anyone else still watching this video and loving it in 2020? There are still no words to adequately describe how amazing Grace is. She emotionally connects with this song so deeply, despite certainly never having experienced anything even remotely like what the lyrics describe. She doesn’t show off, doesn’t inject herself into her performance, but instead lets the pain of the song’s subject provide the message. Just watch her face, her eyes, the little sad look at the end, she is an emotional empath on a scale not seen in music in a very long time, if ever. She’s come a long way since this performance and has written and performed a lot of incredibly good music, but to me this video captures what makes Grace so uniquely special. Thank you Paste for having this session and for allowing Grace to record something that will forever be a part of Grace’s musical legacy. Grace is an absolute goddess.

I lost my daughter almost a year ago to addiction - I was clicking through grace's videos and came upon this - so beautiful - kept listening - working to understand - no way she was singing about overdose - - then I read some comments and went to the other video - - my poor little heart - addition is so mean - I'm sorry for all it touches - and relieved my daughter no longer suffers

Mystery is right. Can't say how many other covers of The A Team I've listened to just so I can compare, but there's just no comparison to this performance. Good voices all, well sung, nice guitar work or piano -- but did absolutely nothing for me. Didn't want to listen again, while I've listened to this at least once a day since it was first put up. Of all the covers Grace has done -- all of which are fantastic -- it's this one more than any other that's just pure magic.

It's interesting if you listen to some of her coffee house songs like "Missing You" on her youtube page, you can tell just how much her voice has deepened and become more raspy over this last year. On one hand, I think I'll miss her higher-pitched, more childlike voice, but I can't deny how much more texture she's already developing as her voice matures. I'm still concerned with her vocal chords long term, and I don't think she can quite hit the high notes she used to be able to, but in return she's gained such a crooner voice that is pretty rare in female singers, especially to this degree. I actually wonder if it will get any deeper as she continues into adulthood? Once she goes through puberty and her voice changes smooth out, if she manages to get back some of the range she had just a year ago, then she could write songs with incredible pitch and range changes quite unlike anything else out there right now. That's pretty exciting!
I think with her amount of vocal control, she will gradually adjust and only expand her range.

And you're right, I hope she regains and maintains her full vocal range as well. However, unlike most teen singers these days, she could write to whatever her range is at the time and make it work, I imagine.

I don't believe the FB views to be accurate or how they count views? UA-cam views to me are accurate and are more valid. I think you can buy FB hits cheaply!
Shaun Schipper That is correct, FB views are not the same as youtube views. You have to view a video longer than 30 seconds for youtube and 3 seconds for facebook. But, it's not that simple, other factors come into play. FB views are raw data, YT views are filtered data. But you can come to a conclusion whether someone likes the video by looking at the thumbs-up or thumbs-down and comments. Grace's FB comments are extremely positive and in the thousands.

Are you kidding me? She does covers beautifully and writes compelling unique songs of her own - at thirteen. Grace is genius.
Grace continues to sing with songs that can be found on youtube, she also has started an acting career, appearing in two Disney movies, Stargirl and Hollywood Stargirl, she is now filming her next movie, Megalopolis directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
People criticizing her for singing in cursive on agt should listen to this and others. But this is a perfect example of Grace's talent and the way she feels the music. It's clear here she feels the music, every single word and delivers it to us with emotion. It's not easy for a teen of her age at the time to sing such an adult themed song and yet deliver it to us with feeling and compassion so much so that we can feel the despair and struggle of the protagonist and be mesmerized with Grace's rendition of this song. Imo much better than the original, Grace, as she does in most of the songs she has covered, made this one her own and gave her a new life and a soul...that's that with her...she sings with her soul and has the music in her. My go to cover of her since i first heared it, this one and "River"

Absolutely loving her confidence and the way her voice is maturing. She just has this way of making a song speak to you, whether it is her own composition or someone else's. This is a beautiful song that just really fits her well. Loved the interview that went with this performance too, and how she lets us know that she understands the song's meaning, but chooses to perform it anyway knowing what a "deep" message it has. This young lady is way beyond her years and we can all learn a lot from her.

It's just not possible to really WATCH Grace's face as she sings this and LISTEN very closely to what she is doing with her voice and not understand that Grace's incredible ability to feel a song and and to powerfully convey the emotion she is feeling is unrivaled in our time! What I have discovered listening to Grace, is that my ears have been deprived of the magic her voice and talent carry with it for too long! Seems I come back to this about once a week. I put it on loop and listen over and over while reading comments. I don't usually listen to the same song over and over. Sometimes I don't even listen to a full song even though I like it. But I can listen to this over and over and over. I love all of her music (also rare for me) but this cover is just, I don't know, there's just something extra special about it.
