    Something that is culturally suppressed is the fact that every one of these boondoggles has an army of experts testifying to the project's validity. My home state of West Virginia is giving $300 million (our state budget is less than $5 billion, btw) to a billionaire-backed megaproject that has yet to prove itself. It's a big scandal, but none of the state's press is concerned about the economics expert that gave false numbers in his feasibility report to lawmakers, that were in part provided by the company seeking the funds. I guess that journalists fear the liberal eyerolls they'll receive if they criticize public experts in any way.

      Actually it is a government issue & safety issue. The government has a responsibility to protect we citizens, not just from invaders and sleazy companies putting carcinogens in their products, but from ensuring our privacy is intact. Tik-Tok is an invasion of that privacy.

      Read the bill, it only makes it harder to install Tic Tok.
      Even with the "ban" you can still downloaded the APK and install the app and none of the API hooks are blocked and you will not be sent to jail.
      If this violates the 1st Amendment then you need to learn about the 1st Amendment.

    Sure, you can tell your child not to use Tik Tok. You will have no way to actually enforce that when the child can use someone else's device at school. IMO, free speech should be a right IN the US; i.e. right of free speech when speaking in the US, when any ability of public organizations to publish or moderate that speech is ENTIRELY WITHIN the US. It's a jurisdictional delineation. If the forum for the speech in question isn't entirely within the USA, as in the case of Tik Tok, I don't see any 1A argument if it's nationally banned. Foreign entities should not have a 1A right or interest within the US. I hope SCOTUS comes to this conclusion as well.

    • @Mortiel
      @Mortiel Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, the thing that always bugs me about the "free speech/association" arguments is based on two main flawed presumption:
      1. If the corporation is owned or controlled by a foreign government, it really doesn't get the protections of the US Constitution.
      2. The speech on social media isn't equal... At best, algorithms recommend socially destructive content based on popularity merely for profit; At worst, that socially destructive content is being boosted by a government adversary to destroy the US from within. Even in the best case, it really doesn't make the best case for defending social media.
      That all being said, I don't know the solution... Even the best of intentioned government wouldn't likely handle a ban correctly... And the US government rarely has the best of intentions.

      And no. This is specifically targeted. That’s if you actually read the bill. And it doesn’t BAN the app, it just has to divest from China.
      But regardless, If an app was designed at distribution of children “images”, should that be banned?

      @@Justin_Beaver564nonsensical position. If England can't legally own a newspaper with a circulation of 50 people in the US (which they can't) then why can't we stop hostile foreign governments from owning what 20% of people claim to get their news from. Y'all are unserious. If you cannot fathom the national security issues with bad actors like China owning propaganda tools, there is no saving you from your naivety except how the congress is currently looking like they will.

      There are a ton of answers to that question. First, consider that the distance from LA to SF is about the same distance and drive time as from London to Edinburgh. Existing public transit will make the trip only 2 hours slower than driving. Flying will be cheaper and faster. So first off, the economics don't make sense.
      Other reasons include: CEQA, a California environmental law that makes it easy to file lawsuits that take a lot of time and money to defend. Federal environmental law is similar. Some requirements demand only union labor or consideration of minority, female, or veteran owned businesses and small businesses over cost or expertise. Some funding is subject to "Buy American" rules that further increase costs. Politicians are determining the route instead of economics or practicality. There are mountains, flood plains, and protected lands (as well as large tracts of farm land) along the route, all of which have powerful constituencies that can use the CEQA to stop, delay, or change plans. Finally, the Cali government is infamously bloated creating massive bureaucracies to navigate, even for the government itself. There are many other reasons too! Hope this helps answer your question.

      How many years of allowing a foreign power influencing children and elections is acceptable before that US one “may” take over?

But they aren't the worst - that belongs to the de-platformers, who despite no crime or threats detected on the part of various platform users, kick people into digital oblivion when government agencies whisper in their ear which ultimately becomes a defamation of sorts, fully devoid of due process - fascism in action. People trying to discuss science during covid circus experienced this multi level malfeasance, and... where to go for compensation: government, or the company allowing itself to be absorbed as a proxy for the workings of the executive branch with flagrant disregard for first amendment rights?
