This reminds me of the old game Happy Wars, I’d always play the Engineer class and stay behind to max out defenses at the base (castle) and when I was done slowly move up and build defenses on the way to the front line. Either we would get pushed back and have a huge amount of barricades and turrets to hold ground or, if I made it to the enemy castle, build ladders and a battering ram to charge through the gate and capture the enemy base. That game was a huge amount of fun but sadly the servers are basically dead.
Kind of makes me sad that by the time a lot of fortifications have been built the match is basically already over. Doesn't seem like the defenses get used much.

Back when I played bf 1 and V I’d always be engineer because I’m a huge sucker for fortifications

It does help during situations when the other team is pushing an objective hard, the tall sandbags do
The sandbags helped mitigate damages done by bombs and explosives.
You take time making and building fornications throughout the game, for them to be destroyed by opponents who get points for destroying them.
You get points for building and rebuilding them too. Also, the fortifications help mitigate any splash damages done by bombs and explosives.
"fornications" and "fortifications"... a world of difference.
