    Wikipedia states:
Dobie Gray (born Lawrence Darrow Brown; July 26, 1940 - December 6, 2011) was an American singer and songwriter, whose musical career spanned soul, country, pop, and musical theater. His hit records included "The 'In' Crowd" in 1965 and "Drift Away", which was one of the biggest hits of 1973, sold over one million copies, and remains a staple of radio airplay.
He was born near Houston, Texas. His family sharecropped. He discovered gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister. In the early 1960s he moved to Los Angeles intending to pursue an acting career while also singing to make money. He recorded for several local labels under the names Leonard Ainsworth, Larry Curtis, and Larry Dennis, before Sonny Bono directed him toward the small independent Stripe Records. They suggested that he record under the name "Dobie Gray", an allusion to the then-popular sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
In 1972, he won a recording contract with Decca Records (shortly before it became part of MCA) to make an album with producer Mentor Williams in Nashville. Among the songs they recorded at the Quadrafonic Sound Studios, co-owned by session musicians Norbert Putnam and David Briggs, was Mentor Williams' "Drift Away", featuring a guitar riff by Reggie Young. Released as a single, the song rose to #5 on the US pop chart and remains Dobie Gray' signature song. It placed at #17 in the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1973, sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA on July 5, 1973. The follow-up, a version of Tom Jans' much-covered song "Loving Arms", hit #61. Gray also released three albums with MCA, Drift Away, Loving Arms, and Hey, Dixie, but later stated that MCA were unsure of how to market the albums -- "They didn't know where to place a black guy in country music."
"Drift Away" is a song by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. In 1973 the song became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified gold by the RIAA. It was the final pop hit for Decca Records in the United States. A new version by Uncle Kracker, with Gray, became a major hit in 2003.

In 1973 , I remember this song being played all night in my neighbourhood....as well as during the day . I would lie awake at night in my hometown , Francistown in Botswana , and listen to this song being belted out from a party . I wonder what ever happened to that DJ who used to play this song on his machine continuously ? That's the beauty of nostalgic memories of my youth . Mr. DJ, wherever you are , thanks for always playing this beautiful song .

Dobie had a few songs that I really liked , one was Drift Away. He never was huge, although he had a very good voice loved his rasp in his voice. Wonder if he was a young man starting today what somebody could’ve done with him because he really did have a good voice. Thank you sir for your time.

Another song that would be played a lot was " Loving Arms " .....yes that's when I discovered Dobie Gray ...in 1973 . A few months later , when I played rhythm guitar in a band and sang vocals , I would belt out ' Loving Arms ' . Thanks to the unknown Mr. DJ , and more thanks to Mr. Dobie Gray !

Are studio albums big or small compared to a chapter book 📕 📖 📚? And in your own opinion It is a cohesive collection of songs used to tell a bigger theme or project an overall vibe. Think of an album as a book. And your songs as chapters.
Every book has chapters. Every album has songs.
Each chapter is different. Each song is different.
But the collection of chapters (the collection of songs) is what tells the full story of the book (of the album) 💿. Usually the songs on an album are the result of an artist's creations during a season of life. This means the songs can all speak to a similar set of themes, ideas and topics. So the aim of an album name is to try and sum up the big story/concept that all the songs pull from when they were written. It's not always like these, especially today. But traditionally, an album is like a "book" with the songs inside being like "chapters." You agreed 👍 chapters in a book yes taking taking the different song sections and compiling them building out a story is like a mini book with different chapters and uh adding in those details to make the song really shine . Chapters of the book are very detailed and some people say instead of track one they say chapter one yeah . so with the different uh uh the analogy to storytelling is is
maybe not even an analogy it might even be like exactly the same because the song lyrics are in essence telling a
story um other people who said the music of the words uh or the music of the words then
the Rhythm then the bass then the basic Baseline Melody then tweak the words then detail of the melody harmonies then
transitions then tweak the harmonies then recycle ♻. Song title plus numbers equals 🟰 chapters lyrics equals 🟰 details. Are studio albums are leaning towards mini which is small book 📕 or full book 📕 📖 📚 both mini and full book 📕 📖 📚 chapter book 📕 📖 📚 which is In my opinion the number is a chapter which means a main division of a book, typically with a number or title while the song title is a song title more of chapter 1 leaning towards book 📕 📖 📚. It dosen’t matter how you say it if an album total 🟰 duration is about 29:25 and it has about 10 chapters it would considered a mini book 📕 📖 📚 but an album that has 8 chapters and the total 🟰 duration is about 49:37 it would consider as a full book 📖 📕 📚 to me it dosen’t matter how long or short the albums are but in my preference albums are books 📖 📚 📕. But what’s your own opinion about it? Are studio albums are leaning towards chapters In my opinion the number is a chapter which means a main division of a book, typically with a number or title while the song title is a song title more of chapter 1 leaning towards book 📕 📖 📚.

"Drift Away" is a song by Mentor Williams written in 1970 and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. Mentor Williams was a country songwriter, and John Henry Kurtz was an actor and swamp rock singer. It was later given to soul-singer Dobie Gray, to which it became a surprise International hit; and the best known version. In 1973 the song became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified gold by the RIAA.[2] It was the final pop hit for Decca Records in the United States.
A new version by Uncle Kracker, with Gray, became a major hit in 2003.

Hi, Tim - GOOD question! Only digital variation of the entire album that's readily available, is as part of a very affordable (at present) 3-record Beat Goes On compilation from 2011 (likely NOT the master tapes, as Dobie's are said to have been destroyed in the Universal Studios fire exactly 3 years before but, have reached out again to them in hopes of getting further clarification as to their source media). Do HIGHLY recommend downloading UMG's Ultimate Collection for $9.49 if so inclined - does have "The Time I Love You The Most" - and BTW, just COULDN'T agree MORE with your assessment; more than a FEW of Dobie's potential singles went unreleased (Capricorn situation MIGHT be somewhat understandable, though) I too am truly BAFFLED as to WHY.....like a LOT of their releases, physical copies are PRICEY - but, have to imagine it's also been made available for streaming.....

    • @ogam5
      @ogam5 4 роки тому +2

UPDATE: just heard back from BGO - their comp actually WAS taken from UMG's British-based COPIES of Dobie's master tapes, and he's going to bring my recommendation to the label's product developer to release all 4 Capricorn albums, the non-album single on another collection.....
