I read the books as an adult, and Laura had her teaching certification, they studied more then now, and became a renowned writer. The ideas they had back then still work today! Laura had to be her fathers helper for shevwas the only healthy one. She worked like a little french work horse. Some of the stories depict wild indians,a fear carried on by her mother. The books were written at a different time,all the better for historic accuracy. It's her life, we need to remember that before removing them from libraries. Or taking any awards away. Only distant cousins still remain let us not dishonor the family
We do have to remember the context of her writings. I am completely against removing any books from libraries. Other people don’t get to decide for me what I should or should not read. Same goes for my grandchildren. It’s not a stranger’s job to dictate their reading list.
It's written in their agendas that they want to erase our heritage. I hope people stand up to it all.
@ConwayTwitter And they don't take into consideration the reasons WHY those people had different beliefs. Laura's mother was scared of Indians... well, multiple times Indians entered the cabin when Laura's father was away, and demanded food. Maybe the Indians felt justified to take from the people who were invading their land, but you can certainly see how someone would be scared of that type of behavior anyway. It's like some people refuse to believe that there can exist true irreconcilable conflict between people. And they also hate the idea of differences between cultures, when those differences aren't just aesthetic.
@ConwayTwitter Also, since the Indians were demanding food from them, it's important to remember that Laure and her family were often starving. So much so, that her little sister Carrie was adversely affected from malnutrition for the rest of her life.
So asking for food from people in that situation is very different from asking for it from people who have plenty to give.

There are SO many untruths in this narrative
These books were read to me when I was a child and I’ve reread them as an adult. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Laura’s attitude toward Native Americans or African Americans. She is obviously ahead of her time and certainly more open-minded than her mother. Laura’s dialog accurately depicts her mother’s prejudice against Native Americans and that of some of the settlers. Why giving an accurate depiction of some of the prevalent attitudes of the time is considered prejudice I will never understand. It’s history. It’s important that we understand what attitudes led to stealing the Native American’s land and wiping out the wolf population, etc.
This narrator's voice is supposed to be cute, but is very annoying. The story is all over the place, and some of the photos have nothing to do with LIW.
If the photographs are real, her economically depressed parents had quite a few formal photos taken, which was not something everyone could do back then. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote very well considering her lack of formal education. She was obviously intelligent and her daughter even more so. I enjoyed the books growing up but acknowledge their shortcomings today.
The photos are real, but are not in sync with the facts.
And some of the photos are of Almanzo's family, who were more well-off than the Ingalls were, and may have helped pay for photos of Laura and Almanzo after their marriage. Of the Ingalls' photos, they weren't all taken the same year, and each may have been taken after painstakingly saving up for them. What _did_ a photography session cost in the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, and beyond, in today's money/buying power?
@ConwayTwitter exactly. Photos weren’t expensive, and quite frankly -I don’t know why everybody is under the impression that the Ingalls were “economically depressed?”
They weren’t. They certainly weren’t wealthy, but they were basically today’s version of middle class.

Absolutely agree! This was very poorly researched. Especially giving people the impression that the Ingalls family was a breath away from being destitute, lol! Now we all know the Ingalls family were not wealthy, but they certainly weren’t poor either! They were basically what we consider today a middle-class family. Charles provided for his family as best as he could and he did a good job. Never once did Laura say she went hungry, nor did her sisters.
And Charles did not walk 300 miles due to them being at the poverty line. A plague of locusts wiped out his entire crop. That’s why he had to walk and find work as did many other farmers.

There were 5 OF THEM..NOT 4. Mary, Laura, Grace, Carrie and Charles Frederick. It's Al -MAN-zo..not Al-MAHN-zo..that's how the TV show pronounced it. Boy the true facts that were glossed over and the pics were not in sync.
I watched all 12 minutes and 43 seconds of this video, and I'm still waiting to hear the "chilling" part. Well, no, I'm not _really_ waiting; I expected none, as I've read a few Laura Ingalls Wilder biographies. Her life had difficulties throughout, and a few "chilling" or frightening things _did_ happen, but nothing that made most of her life "chilling."
Please put people's names and the year the photo was taken with the photos, or the group name of group photos. When you mentioned that Charles Ingalls walked a long distance to find work, the photo was of the Wilder family from when Amanzo was a boy. Give viewers accurate context, please.
The narrative was all over the place, jumping from one part of Laura's life to another, and back again; half way through the video you mentioned her death, then backtracked to her earlier life??? Make it make sense!! Please follow a coherent, chronological narrative, regardless of subject matter, which would be an improvement. But I have a feeling that AI is in charge of the channel, did the narration, and maybe the putting the pictures up, as well, which do not entirely match the narrative. A more accurate narrative and pictorial display can be done.

Chilling? I hate how often the word chilling or phrase “blood ran cold” is used in place of something more like surprised or astonished. Unless something scares the crap out of you, please stop using chilling.

I am not saying that Charles did not love his daughters, because of course he did. But back in those days, sons were almost…..imperative-? (not sure if that’s the right word), but basically sons not only carried on the family name but they were a huge help on the farm.
So when Charles and Caroline lost their only son, apart from the devastation ANY parent would feel, losing a baby 😢… It was probably a double whammy, because now there is nobody to carry-on the Ingalls’ name.
If you read between the lines - the books were written for children - it's amazing the family survived
Poorly researched. The picture of the baby is Laura’s baby sister Grace, not her daughter Rose. Also Pa walked to get work due to a locust plague that hit that part of the country not due to poverty.

Charles Ingalls provided for his family quite well.

I love those books. Her language maybe archaic but it reflects a DIFFERENT time and todays’ expectations should not be applied. In the past people thought and believed differently.
This should be removed from UA-cam. I found it offensive, in the narrator's tone and the poor research.
Hate the narration. It almost comes off as mocking her. I could make a better composed and more accurate narration myself. That pic at around 7 minutes looks like when Laura and Almonzo lived in FLORIDA, something that gets glossed over like it never even happened in most accounts. In truth, the Wilders and the Ingalls probably had lives that were no worse than millions of their peers of the time. Life was hard back then but people were remarkedly resilient.
