  • Summer pruning is a critical time if you are trying to maintain your fruit trees at a manageable size. While Winter Pruning is great for detail pruning (crossing branches, deformed wood, etc), Summer Pruning is ideal for maintaining both the height of the fruit tree, and to induce the growth of more fruiting wood. In many fruit trees, it's this newly grown fruiting wood that your fruit grows on NEXT year.
This video 1 of 2 shows summer pruning examples on my "Santa Rosa" Plum, "Flavor Grenade" and "Emerald Drop" Pluots, "Sweet Treat" and "Candy Heart" Pluerry, "Cot-N-Candy" Aprium, and "Bella Gold" Peacotum.
To safely prune any tree or plant, you want to make clean pruning cuts, and for that you need a quality set of pruning shears or loppers. The Corona shears and loppers I used in this video represent a good value, and can be found here: (Shears) amzn.to/2F4j7ao , (Loppers) amzn.to/3bx0Grc

You should! They mean business, and have been leaving very clean cuts to the pruned wood. These loppers can be found here: amzn.to/3bx0Grc

Can you do a video on how to look for and spot the signs of borer damage? Best time to spray and with what in the southwest.

That's a great idea for a video. I'll add it to my future video idea list!

Eating a Parfianka while watching this video. Mine is out of control too. Most of the branches are bending over to the ground they're so loaded.

We picked a couple, but they weren't quite there yet. TONS this year is madness!

I'm having trouble finding a flavor grenade pluot. If you know where I can find a 15 gallon, please let me know. I'm in the inland empire. Thanks!

You'll want to use DaveWilson.com to find the specific fruit, and click on the "where to buy" button which shows the nurseries that have ordered it. I'd call the individual nurseries to see if any are still in stock

I still haven’t done summer pruning because it makes me nervous 😬 this might be a dumb question, but this is my first year with fruit trees - once the second-year wood fruits, will it fruit again the following year? Or does it just become a structural part of the tree?

Just do it! Best case is your trees will thrive, and worst case is your will recover, lol. With the repeat fruiting, it depends on the tree. Apples repeatedly fruit on the fruiting spurs that develop, while Jujubes and pomegranates fruit on new wood. In general, the older the wood (even if still fruiting), the more of the structure of the tree it becomes.

What month summer can prune , after or before fruit

    • @TheBusyGardener

Hi there Khang! Summer pruning isn't an exact date, but rather, a style of pruning that emphasizes size control, and setting the tree up to grow additional fruiting wood this season. I would personally wait until the fruit is harvested, only because I hate to see fruit go to waste. If you needed to for some reason, you could harvest before or after. It's up to you.

I hate spraying chemicals that is why I started a small orchard. I only get bug ridden fruit. Do you think I should spray a chemical. I wanted to stay organic. This doesn’t seem possible.Nothing really bothers the Quince or cherries, mostly the apples. I bought most of my trees from Trees Of Antiquity.

There are very effective organic pesticides which cover a range of bugs. Some options (depending on your pests) include spinosad, a pest-killing soap, and natural oils.

I would rather have ants than Yellowjackets. No way to get rid of them. Never had this kind before. They are a black and white kind of wasp.
