    Pepino was a surprise; leaves, flowers, growing form....all look more like eggplant....or anything but cucumber or melon. Thanks

    I'm in Southern California, and the fruits I'm currently growing are stawberries, dwarf trees of lemons, tangerines, and peaches in containers. I have an in ground orange tree. I'm still fairly new at gardening, looking for more varieties of things to grow. I'm trying watermelon and cantaloupe this year.

    Goodness Wendi, the assortment of plants and fruits that you pack into your small space growing area is very impressive! Even more impressive is your enthusiasm for eating such healthy and tasty fruit rewards for all your heard work. Yes the weather seems odd this spring up in these parts, moving into early summer already. Days warming to around 80 and nights dropping back into the 50s. Have been setting plants in the ground and containers. Have a piece of shade cloth to try over the tomatoes this season. Happy Gardening! -Bob...

      You had a long winter then it suddenly get to being really warm. For us it's almost like winter hasn't left. But I do love that we get more sun since the angle shifted. Just loving this weather. My space is all about cramming from all directions. Haha!

    Thanks again for all your awesome and creative ideas. It’s very inspiring how you grow so many things like rare and TCM plants. Coming from 2 generations of herbalists in Australia, I want to try and incorporate TCM plants into my garden to carry on some kind of tradition in the family. I really want to find a black Surinam cherry plant. I have loquat, elderberries, mulberries, kumquat, lychee, ice cream bean, purple heart fig, etc growing in pots at the moment because I have a small backyard and narrow side garden 😉. Love your content! Almost to 100k!! 😯👏🏼💪🏼👍🏼

      Love all the varieties you're growing! I miss ice cream beans...I follow some TCM way of life, and happy that mom's teaching me these old ways. I love some of the TCM plants are also plants that have been grown in western places too. 100K on the way -- thank you for your support, woowhoo! :D

    I'm growing apples in containers "Golden dorsett" and "Anna" varieties are happy in zone10. I'm going to add black Surinam cherry though. I don't like the taste of the red variety but I'll take your word for it if you say the black variety is better.

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  11 місяців тому

      The key to eating surinam is wait for them to drop. They have a funny taste if eaten before they're actually ready. You found apple varieties that do well in our zone? :)

      They are tasty! But slugs kept getting to them previous year since I planted on the shade side. Once I get a sunny spot I will try again.

      It's a great time right now as the sun angle is higher, but the weather isn't too hot to stress the plants. Can't complain. :)

    We re-did our entire garden. My wife 'sifted' the entire dirt this past winter and it made a huge difference. It's a small space garden 12'x40' with a cattle panel trellis for our cucumbers. Flower wise, it's been a hit/miss year. Last year we had some major blooms on our Lily of the Niles/Hydrangeas, but this year, hardly any blooms. Garden plants have been odd. Squash & collard did great, corn is 50/50. We have some flowers on the edges for bees/butterflies, but mixing I'm not sure if the root system would compete too much with the vegetables??

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  11 місяців тому

      Your wife did a great job!! You got a good amount of space to grow. Not sure if the roots are competing, but most vegetable roots stay within the 12 inch depth. Have you added any fresh compost, fertilize lately? Some things you grew are heavy feeders. PS. I love Hydrangeas!

    • @bpsitrep
      @bpsitrep 11 місяців тому

      @@wendiland I bought several bags of a time released fertilizer and she put that in with the soil when she cleaned it up. We have two squash plants remaining which seem to be producing a 'second batch' of squash. Cucumbers are coming in nicely now, regular, Jade, Green and White 'bitter melon' Goya cucumbers. We had cantaloupe growing out of our compost bin. We left four in it just to see how it goes, thinned out some, planted some, they're just starting to produce now. Sweet corn came in early, end of May, going to plant more in the 'sunshin'e next year.

    Hi Wendi! I love your channel! Question for you... I love strawberries and I REALLY want to grow them. But I have seen these horrible videos of worms coming out of them when you soak them in baking soda... I think it's baking soda. Do you know if that is true or is it a myth? Do you worry about things like that? And how do you keep the birds from eating on them? Thank you in advance for your time. :)

    WOW ,dear Wendi,you never fail to amaze us with your oh so BEAUTIFUL and so PRODUCTIVE garden! Love how you munch on the strawberries😋🍓with no need to sweeten them with sugar, honey or coolwhip, because the store bought is so sour!😂Cape Gooseberries are beautiful and they have the same,papery skin covering as tomatillos have. Calamantsi beautiful tiny oranges,which if I heard correctly you eat just like kumquats,the only difference is the skin is thinner than in the kumquat, I have 3 baby kumquats that are aching for transplant to larger pots(currently in those ind-sized yoghurt cups),have 2 beautiful avocados, 1 Booth and the other a Hass, and you know,I began watching a video you share of your recent trip to Vietnam but....cutshort, whatintriguedmewasa shortJackfruit(smaller,probably waistsized,comparingwith your uncle's height)andithavingahugejackfruit!😛Well,sometimein the past months or weeks,aJackfruit seedling I have in a 5" flowerpot,bloomed and just a coupla weeks ago, i noticed it has an olive-sized jackfruit!!!🤣Since we've began getting some good rain, especially recently this past friday and saturday, I think its a good idea to plant it out, taking advantage of the sunshiny days(today sunday)and the rainy days(overcast and beautifully wet)!Thanks for sharing Wendi, 👍and sorry for the long comment but I get carried away by the beauty and abundance to be found on this beautiful channel of yours! 👋😊

      Your jackfruit fruited so soon!?? Where do you live? Beautiful variety you got in your garden too! I am constantly playing catchup with plants. This weather does luckily make it easier for transplanting. Stay tuned for more Vietnam adventurous I haven't post.
      Calamansi is similar to kumquats. In Vietnam they actually call calamansi a kumquat. But, I don't know what they call a kumquat..lol Mine has thinner skin, but it gives a nice crunch when they're fresh. It's way more fragrant than kumquat, but the peel of kumquats are much more enjoyable to eat alone. :D

      @Wendi Phan I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Beautiful weather here, we are able to experience all four seasons. Yes, it is very easy to grow Strawberries, actually most any type, Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, etc. The challenge are the birds, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, etc......they seem to find a way to devor the berries just as they ripen. 🤣

    You are growing a lot of the same things as me in Florida, but I think our rainy high-humidity summers are quite a bit different from the hot dry summers of Southern California. Some other good small container-suitable fruit trees are:
    Pitangatuba (Eugenia neonitida), a small attractive bush and a close relative of Surinam cherry, but bigger fruit and tastier.
    Miracle berry (Synsepalum dulcificum) which for about a half hour after eating makes sour food taste sweet.
    Limequat (Citrus x floridana) which is a hybrid between kumquat and key lime. They can be eaten whole like a kumquat.
    Gogi berry (Lycium barbarum) is a staple of both Chinese cusine and traditional Chinese medicine.
    Jaboticaba (Plinea. spp.) There are several species of this small and strikingly beautiful tree which grows fruits directly on the main stems of the tree.
    Lemondrop mangosteen (Garcinia intermedia) maxes out at about 2m (7') and makes fruits much like the famous purple mangosteen, but about half the size.
    Peanutbutter fruit (Bunchosia glandulifera) a small tree of about 2m that makes date-sized fruits that taste about 80% like peanutbutter.

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  11 місяців тому

      Those are awesome suggestions!! I will eventually circle back to Miracle berry, the plant didn't grow much when I grew it years ago. I was looking into Pitangatuba, the taste sounds amazing!! Peanutbutter fruit sound interesting too! We probably have similar winters, but summer is more dry here. We get winter storms usually.
