I tell you, Nick McCarthy is one of the most underrated and uber-talented musicians I've ever seen. He is just amazing and I totally favor him over the rest for it.
@uhoh yea I actually agree with you. Some fans defend it with “sounds are supposed to evolve blah blah” but pretty much thing in any category there will always be some asshole who will defend it, sometimes to the point of stupidity somewhere. I honestly didn’t care for that album. From the debut album til Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, I felt it kept a nice progression of sound that had a sort of signature to it. Maybe Nick was the main piece of it I don’t know.
I so love Alex and Nick, they are both brilliant guitarists and they harmonize so well together. It's always a joy to watch them in these acoustic jams. I hope to one day see one live!
i think its mostly because its an acoustic performance. it was a chilled out atmosphere and that session was being recorded for radio play. check out nicks finger work and it could also be that they were concentrating really hard
It's very used in funk and other styles, you strum in all the strings but you tap only the note you want to play. the other strings sound like dead notes, it's used when you want to add some percussive style. Sorry I just had to say that.
That´s not sweep picking. He mutes the high strings and lets the bass strings ring a little while he plays these notes. That way he can strum and focus not to hit the bass strings too much but mainly the the notes he picks but these are played with a lot of hammer on and pull offs.

its just muting. look at stevie ray vaughan. he uses it a lot, for example in pride and joy
maybe he's faded
they look kinda anti-motivated
