Yep, it was a perfect example of the intricate types of shots great pool players need to have in their arsenal. Not saying pool is in any way as complex as chess, but it's certainly more complicated than snooker on a shot by shot basis. More risk per shot. More chance the frame is over in a few seconds!
@@carlhartwell7978 Yeah, I'm really not a fan or believer of the phrase "snooker is akin to chess, pool is akin to draughts". As an enjoyer of both snooker and pool, it becomes obvious that when it comes to offensive tactics, 8 ball pool is a much more complex game than snooker. A skilled snooker player comes to the table almost immediately knowing the shot to play, whereas with 8 ball the entire run is considered from start to finish before a single shot is played. You think 3 shots ahead in snooker, you think the whole rack ahead in 8 ball. Snooker is of course considered a harder game simply because it's a lot more mechanically demanding, which of course is an extremely tough thing that requires a lot of work to get right!

The delight on Stephen's face when Gareth missed his last ball in the second frame. Even though it's a friendly chat, that competitiveness is always there. Nice video, thanks guys.
and the genuine annoyance that he'd been talked in to the double on the black. Like all top pro's, even after retirement, the desire to win is always there.
Absolutely brilliant. If Gareth hadn't coached him through it, I reckon Hendry would have come unstuck. Fascinating to see the difference in how they see the table. Love it
Gareth Potts came to Stephen Hendry’s Snooker Club in Preston when I was about 13 years old (around 2011) and I won the Saturday kids tournament to play him in one of the 8 exhibition matches he was playing! I always used to pride myself on my bottle, but when my name got called out to play him I started seeing double! Top guy though I’ve still got the picture my Dad took shaking Gareth’s hand before breaking off - good times! Signed cue and towel still intact too ha! Great to see him in these videos, he’s a natural coach and explains the game so well!
Tell me about it! I never had a problem with potting on a pool table. @carlhartwell7978 I can agree with you there, when I played for the local pub team way back when, if everyone was quiet then I would coast both of my games, it was the whispering in my ear that used to put me off tho as it made me second guess everything, I was also a lot younger too, but if I was faced with the same scenario now I would plainly just ignore it 😂

That was perhaps the most engaging and informative Cue Tips episode yet 👌. Great coaching tips and a whole new appreciation for the game of pool and the strategies involved. You could tell Stephen got a kick out of this as well. Bravo lads 👏🏻
Amazing to hear Stephen one of the best snooker players of all time, learning and having no idea before what's involved. I also just assumed it should be easy for snooker players and it's just about potting easy balls in big pockets. I had no idea about the patterns and ball order and planning.
The thing is, the length of a long range pot on a pool table is a medium range pot for a snooker player on a snooker table, so when the snooker player plays pool, long range pots are easy by comparison and they can usually pot their way out of trouble if running out of position. Yet more often than not, just leaving the cue ball somewhere in the middle of a pool table will see them on something to pot. So they might not always choose the easiest patterns, whereas the pool player might not be as good a potter as the snooker player, but they tend to make each individual pot easier by using the easier patterns to clear the table. I always think of a golf analogy where a short game specialist who excels at chipping, pitching and putting might beat a tour professional on a pitch and putt course, but the tour pro will win on an actual course where driving from the tee on longer holes also becomes a factor.
Great vid! Sometimes you aren't sure if Stephen is taking it all in but after just one experience learning how the white gets thrown wide, the next frame he recalls and plays a similar shot perfectly. Just goes to show how professional players get a feel for things so quickly
@@johndoe-jg7he I don't think he is. I've seen him play 9 ball and Chinese 8 ball but they both use full size cue balls. I think he lost because the smaller cue ball went much wider off the black than he expected. After playing a million cuts like that on snooker tables it must be quite a surprise!
That was excellent. Thanks so much Stephen and Gareth! I'm a die-hard snooker guy but have such an appreciation for pool. It's a very different game, and I find it very difficult to play well (I completely run out of position, the table dimension confuses the hell out of me, and I just can't read the pattern as Gareth describes in this video). Amazing stuff :)
8:53 Steven! LMAO, that 'Oooh, can't be happy about that!' And the grin glued to your face during the next 3 shots!🤣 That was funny. Very entertaining interview/tutorial chaps. Loving it!

Now after watching literally the best of both sports gave me the slight nudge towards pool. Absolutely amazing seeing Garett’s brain shots ahead absolutely amazing
Gareth Potts is awesome, and a really nice chap. Played a county pool game in his club a few years back, and got to watch him play - what a player - but also really friendly and chatted to everyone. Great video. I reckon Stephen may enter ultimate pool!
