The song is quite short but the director wanted Elvis to do a whole bunch of songs that they could edit together to include into a one hour TV special. The special had parts of the sit down segment, parts of these stand up segments, a full gospel production number, a series of songs to represent Elvis’ musical journey, plus the opening Trouble/Guitar Man number and the If I Can Dream closing number. It was a lot to squeeze into a 45-50 minute show (I hour TV screen time included commercials) so that had to make songs quite short.
Some one correct me if I am wrong but I seem to remember 1/2 American homes watched the show which means they would have to change channels to NBC quite a feat!
Nothing beats him doing it in the 50’s for me. During the 50s, he was eventually censored on tv and shown from the waist because his moves were considered obscene. Elvis got a LOT of hate back when he started out from adults and the press (and ironically, white racists). Honestly, don’t know how he took it, especially since he was so young.
