dude the ramona cover at the end going into the full sex bob omb style is something i never knew i needed but i now know what has been missing from my life for the last 14 years
Wow it sounds so good when it's clipping. And it honestly a very appropriate decision by Beck and the team. Since Sex Bobomb is supposed to be a shitty band, makes sense that they would make shitty technical "mistakes" like that. Edit: just went back to finish the vid and realized you made the exact same point lol
@@vanillafranco no one’s got fun tone content like you guys these days! It’s always “here’s how to get a vintage sound” and not something driven by passion. Also, I think you’d honestly nail Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s early tones if you are open to suggestions :)
Wajo! Great video. I’ve been avoiding clipping recently way more, because I don’t wanna flop it when the stems go to a mastering or mixing engineer. Now you inspired me to not care anymore, if it’s a choice and it sounds good, then that’s awesome. I also put a limiter or compressor on my mastering bus nowadays, so im not surprised when i put one on in the end, when there is absolutely no headroom left for any dynamics or sounds.
12:51 The monitoring compressor is in fact a thing; one of the most famous examples is the Quad Bus compressor which is found on the SSL 4000 series of recording consoles (and also in plugin form). The studio I work at uses one of these consoles and damn that compressor sounds good
@@l.aerosmusic This is great news! I always compressed to record drums but didn’t know if I was “allowed to” 😂 I feel validated, thanks for commenting !
this.....this is a godsend. ive been trying to get this on my own for like 3 years! man i wish i realized it was that stupid simple, but then again i didnt think like the band wouldve.
As a complete guitar beginner, I will gladly say as someone who has no idea what they're doing half the time they play guitar, even I know that playing the guitar with the amp settings on all high is not a good idea. (My room might explode if i had) but this is clearly well thought out and experimental and the tone is definitely there. Thanks for uploading. First time viewing a video of yours keep it up!
Well Ladybird, my settings weren't too whack but I'd have to admit I wouldn't recommend it either ;) I hear it's bad to do for some reason. Thanks for the kind words, do stick around!👾
I did hear this and forgot to mention it. I think the Rick sounding super accurate was just a nice coincidence! I believe a Rickenbacker was used for the bass battle though but other than that, you are correct. More of a reason not to focus too hard on equipment!
@@vanillafranco yeah, ironically a Rick was used for the bass battle parts that were played by a Mustang in the movie, while all of Scott's Rickenbacker parts were played by JMJ on his Mustang on the recording
Cowboy hat is 10/10 great video, you really got the vibe here. Guitar Wolf do a similar thing recording, super loud clipping! I vaguely remember reading that Beck used a Silvertone with lipstick pickup to record the Sex Bob-Omb stuff, straight into a multitrack tape machine. Exactly the kind of thing a novice band would be doing in a garage with no money :D Beck has the same tone on this track too ua-cam.com/video/kqPaxe2ujIQ/v-deo.html
I love that burnt orange sound ! I’ll definitely have to check out Guitar Wolf🎵 And for your nice words about my cowboy hat I have only to say that you light up the room like a floodlight shining on a fuel fire on the 4th of July, feat. The Sun 🌞

Nice cowboy hat! Also... this video was a delight. Nothing hits quite like the soundtrack songs tho! Great video thanks!

You are officially my favorite music channel now, a little question, is there a way to get this clipping sound directly recording into di, I have no pedals to do that, thanks you sm for this video!
Your vocals sounded really nice and present, did you eq them at all or was it all really just turning up the focus rite all the way? I haven’t been able to get a good vocal sound like every :p
Apparently it will but I have never seen any evidence of this in any case, ever. To play it safe, don't do it! but to not play it safe, do it six thousand times💣
if you use a suboctave pedal and absolutely slam it with a ton of low end information then maybe but in a typical circumstance, especially if you use distortion/drive pedals that remove a lot of low end, no its fine to run a bass through a guitar amp
@@vanillafranco I have a 70's Ibanez Rickenbacker Clone that really needs work and since that bridge is a low-quality copy of the real one. well, you can sorta guess my frustration there.
