- Cristina Deutekom (Elvira) sings "Qui la voce sua soave - Vien diletto" from Bellinis I puritani
Cond.: Charles Vanderzand
1969, live, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
What does not come across was the size of her voice. It was huge in volume even though it was light in timbre. When I heard her live the articulation sounded completely natural and was miraculous to hear. She was a gem. Thanks for this.
Yes.... size had nothing to do with volume! You can actually have a big voice with low carrying power and a small light voice that is loud penetrating and overpowering! Its the width of the resonance that designates size. A thinner voice can actually be louder!

Now you’re confusing people again.
Small voices can carry well and bigger voices not so well.
It’s about focus, squillo and overtones.
HUGE ringing soprano instrument! She overpowers everybody and anything WITH beauty as well. Amazing!
what kind of sopranos wold you say she was?
@@FranzBlumVan1890 lyric soprano with a great range.
@@FranzBlumVan1890
Dramatic coloratura of course
she doesn't overpower Callas...
She's perfectly amazing.
A me è sempre piaciuta ho sentito nel 76 all'Arena di Verona una magnifica Lucia con Pavarotti e Bruson, indimenticabile
She was phenomenal.....una absoluta with a sprecial twist...brava Stinje!
Wow!!! Real Great Tenor .....
I personally find that when bigger voices sing these light lyric coloratura roles it adds more tension and excitement. I love love love this woman’s instrument. She really is a soprano assoluta.
I am so happy and proud to hear this. I was only able to see her live in two productions in 1980 and 1986 so I only knew this from the old records and cd's. AMAZING. ♥
And that is called singing.❤
Phénoménal. Quelle classe ! Quel chant ! Quelle force ! Quelle beauté !
MERCI eelco67.

She was the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Fantastica!!!!!
Amazing Elvira, Amazing Cristina.
Absolutely wonderful!!!!
A soprano assoluta!
HOW did she do it? I've heard singers sing hahahaha when they sing the coloratura, or glide sloppily along approximate notes, but I have never heard anyone go Ghaghaghagha. It's so fascinating. She was phenomenal.
Shardad, in the sixties I used to watch all Deutekoms performances behind the scenes. Even though she was singing more and more in the great Operahouses she never acted the great Diva, Always being friendly with everybody, talking and laughing with the chorus. She knew no stagefright, I remember her first Norma, during the intermissions she was puting a little recording machine behind a piece of decor, joking with some chorus members, even picking her nose. She made me quitte angry, I expected more dignified behaviour from her. The orchestre started, she opened her mouth and that sound came pouring out like a waterfall, so amazing ! She always stayed like that; a typical Amsterdam lady, without kapsones like we say. The only thing I hated about her singing was this yodling, I don't know why she did not change that, it put me quitte off ! Now I realise how special she was, I am discovering her all over again. Greetings Shahrdad.
She certainly always came across as a really fun lady, but that gargling, yodeling, clucking coloratura was so fascinatingly disconcerting.
Those are her phenomenal glottal stops you are hearing. No one does it like her.
@@Shahrdad Fascinatingly disconcerting... That is exactly how I'd put it. I can't even decide if I like it or not. I know it is not 'musical' per se, but it seems to be so absurdly difficult to do with her precision that I value it very much. And she was able to sing legato, or at least with a more traditional approach to coloratura. She just chose not to. She is probably my favourite singer who belongs to that group of sort of forgotten great voices of the past, though who will ever be able to forget her yodel-esque thing. Fascinatingly disconcerting indeed :)
@@j.j.schlachtfeld9325 There are recordings of her singing the coloratura legato instead of gargling it. She was apparently quite capable of that. I first discovered her singing the Queen of the Night on the LP with Pilar Lorengar as Pamina (I think Solti was the conductor, but not sure). The last part of O, zittre nicht really fascinated me. Her coloratura sounded just like a violin being played without any vibrato or portamento, and in the passages just before the high F, she sounded just like a chicken. I kept going back again and again and wondering how she did it.
Fantastic! Veel dank!
meravigliosa !
Hermosa aria en su voz!!!
Fantastica!
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡LA TOTAL TRANSMISIÓN DEL SENTIMIENTO ARTÍSTICO !!!!!!!!!!
Bravissima
Brawississimo !
Diva maravillosa!
Pure io l'ho sentita in Arena di Verona magnifics
❤❤❤
Molto brava, delicata, grande interprete...Elvira.
PRACHTIG!!!!!!!!

Here we can see that she was able to vocalize "normally", not using her weird staccato legato technique that sound like yodeling
Although I like her technique, it doesn't work for every aria. So yes I too like it very much to hear her a bit more "soft" here🤗
I love her and of course she is great here but she keeps forcing the normalized scales instead of doing it her own way. It sounds sluggish and imprecise whereas if she sang her usual scales she would have been faster and more precise. Her voice alone, though, is reason to listen to anything she does - pure beauty and ALWAYS with the core of the voice.
I even prefer her to Maria Callas in this aria... amazing
So do I, and that while Callas is my favourite soprano.
Bella voce ...coloratura pure. Incapace di parlare bene l'italiano.
She attacks the high notes as if it was walking children on nature
