    thanks - would have also loved to see how the octabox compares to a reflective umbrella :-) any views on that?

    I can see to that you placed the umbrella center close to the light. I always extend the umbrella rod as far out as possible. The closer, the softer, that's correct for subject and light but looks like it is true for light and modifier too

      Good idea. Although my old umbrella is flimsy and might fall off if not placed too tightly again the strobe.

    That's not a "white umbrella". It's a "shoot through" umbrella. The real lesson in light here is that your shoot through is also throwing light all over the place. Nearby walls, ceilings, even the floor. So of course it will create a softer light. Use it in a studio or room that has darker walls or walls further away and you will not get the same result. However your Octa will since it's contains the light more.
