  • Since the beginning of this year, fires have ravaged the Amazon rainforest, engulfing parts of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and others. Millions of acres of forest are currently burning across South America.
    Why is this happening?
Wildfire season: South America experiences peak wildfires between August and October due to intentional burning by farmers, often spreading into forests.
Severe drought: The region is facing one of its worst droughts, especially in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, exacerbating the wildfire situation.
El Niño: The recent El Niño event worsened the dry conditions, fueling the spread of fires.
Deforestation: High levels of deforestation in the Amazon have made the forest more vulnerable to wildfires.
Climate change: Global warming has increased temperatures and reduced rainfall, making droughts and wildfires more intense.
