Just like despite Unohana being fairly powerful she never got to fight any enemies and even during the initial Quincy invasion when the shinigami were getting wrecked she was ordered to stay in the barracks and not go out and fight. As her healing was going to be needed far more than her fighting ability. So we’ve seen it with Unohana directly, that the captain of squad 4’s fighting prowess is almost irrelevant in regards to their actual role of healing.

I wish Bleach would never end, it's an excellent plot and script. For example, new captains may come to Gotei. Attractive, tough, some gentle, some very strong female captains may come. New male captains with different types and more interesting stories. And Ichigo can be given the captaincy and his students can reside in the city of Karakura. His place of duty is the city of Karakura. Of course, there may be 15 or 20 shinigami with him who listen to his orders.

I'm pretty sure shunsui was already born when the original blood war took place, so it's definitely possible.The original generation stayed captains for a few decades for those who left or died earlier, and one to two centuries for those who stayed around longer. Shunsui would have been a kid around the time he met Batsu'unsai though.

I like how Squad 6 went from female Zaraki Kenpachi to proud and elegant noblemen. I hope Kubot works and finishes the Hell Arc sometime soon. We learned that captains end up in Hell due to their soul quality so it's pretty likely that we'll see most, if not all, of the 1st generation captains in the Hell Arc.
