    This reminds me of 40 years ago and my first pond and building the in pond gravel filter. I remember we used a form of irrigation pipe purchased from our local irrigation company. It was about 2 inch pipe and full of small holes and then we'd connect it to a central heating pump outside the pond but bellow water level in a specially dug hole. I remember when it had matured it did a fantastic job.
    Love the video's.
    Terry.

    Eric,
    We had garden snakes one year during a drought and they we kept finding the Koi outside of the pond. We did not know at that time that there was a snake issue. One day we were out having coffee and we saw what was happening. The snakes were in the water fall area and was amazed to see that the snakes were almost acting like vipers, striking the fish as they swam by. We were in the process of building our 1000 gal pond on the other side of our pool, and had to hurry up and put in the liner, to get the fish out of there. Had this happen on the larger pond....they also may have wound up in the pool. I too am amazed that the fish survived.
    Have a wonderful day and thank you for all of your time and efforts to help us all!

    Hello ponddigger, congrats on your wonderful videos. I have a question that never gets discussed. How do we calculate the correct amount of water that should travel through a bog filter per hour? I am planning to build my pond with a surface area of about 600 sqft and depth of around 6 feet. I want to have a very large bog of about the same size of the pond approx 500sqft. I will have about 5-10 koi fish. Also the bottom of the pond will have gravel and water will pumped through the gravel up flow. I would like to know how how much water per hour I should pump through the pond and how much through the up flow system on bottom of the pond. I never found anybody that discussed this topic....glad to hear your input.

    Hi...I love the videos, by the way. When it comes to instruction, I think they are some of the clearest and as a complete novice that is about to build their own pond, they have been invaluable. I've inherited a pond that has been poorly constructed so I'm in the process of clearing it out and re-digging it and sorting out the filtration. I would like to add an under gravel suction grid to the pond. I would also like to build an active bog filter but I don't think I'll be able to. My question is you mentioned that the water should pass through the gravel once an hour so how do you calculate that? I have an existing Blagdon 3600 air pump that has a max flow rate of 3600 ltr/h (792 gal /hr), and the pond will be about 15,000 ltrs (3300 gals), so will I need to buy a new air pump or is this sufficient? Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Take care.

    I have a large natural pond that is 25x35x5' and a waterfall.The submersible pump is stirring up the black sand and muck and the small filtration pressurized filter is not doing a good job. My rocks are dirty. What filtration should I install.? I am thinking of driving a well and let that feed the pond and waterfall for the filtration.Please let me know what you think.

    I have a problem with string algae every spring in my 700 gallon fish pond and have to use chemicals like algae fix to kill it so the filter can remove it . Is there a better solution than chemicals for this type of algae?? I use a large filter with mechanical and bio filtering. My setting is full sun, with both koi and goldfish and water plants like water iris and Lilly pads. Also has a 2500 gph pump for a waterfall. Any help would be appreciated.

    The Koi more than likely jumped from the pond and, considering that they are closely descended from Carp, either landed directly into the pool or landed in the grass near the path and flopped into the pool. How it survived the pools WATER, however, will remain a mystery to me!

      enanoaL That would be my guess too. If so, the little bit of chlorine in the pool probably disinfected any cuts/micro-cuts and helped save the fish's life. I'm hoping the owner had some of the electrolight/slimy* stuff to put on the gills.
      *Technical term for the stuff that I can't remember what it's really called! :D

    What Eric, T.P.D., fail to tell everyone is the KOI was an Olympic diving champion. So, I will tell you my theory on how the KOI ended up in the pool. The pond had a diving board and ladder installed for the #SHOWKOI to practice for the 2016 Olympic diving competition. When the KOI was on the diving board he noticed the dog was watching. The #SHOWKOI knew the distance was 6 feet between the pond and pool so without hesitation, with the dog between the pond and pool, the KOI leaped into the air, off the diving board, in a pike position, over the dog, and executed the perfect 3 ½ pike dive into the pool. The dog was so amazed he applauded (barked) with excitement which alerted the lady inside the home. The lady exited the house to find the #SHOWKOI inside the pool. The End!(LOL)

  • @dskoi7358
    @dskoi7358 9 років тому +3

    My theory...... I think the koi was aided (assume it wasn't the family dog but by some other land creature or bird) out of the pond or it was fleeing the land creature or bird and jumped out of the pond. The dog came just in time to chase the land creature or bird away. Then the dog helped the koi to the nearest water (pool). Then the dog barked to get help for its koi friend since he knew the pool wasn't where koi should be.

  • @sarirbolah
    @sarirbolah 9 років тому

    I think that this is simple matter, the fish in question had made a big leap luckily into the direction of the pool (if not, it just leap along longest side of the pond) and so the Koi made it into the pool in that one big leap.
    I have never witness it but I assume that a koi can leap higher and over a man head and can cover a long distance.
    Also you didn't give much info on the length or depth of the pond or size of the koi.
    I think that if the koi was wounded, you would have already told us, as in the end the KOI HAVE SURVIVE such adventure.
    Or in more story-wise, this may have happen a bit like what 'D S Koi' said.
    Hope that you will give us your theory about it too.

    How would you tie a suction grid system to the pump? Thru the liner near the bottom? What kind of fitting would you use if so? Into a helix skimmer? Very interested in a low maintenance pond in the near future.

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  8 років тому

      My favorite way is airlift suction grid or external pump connection but it can be connected to the Helix Pond Skimmer with a penetration at 33" deep. Airlift or submersible pump on stand pipes requires NO liner penetration. External pumps can be plumbed over the top of the liner without a penetration in the liner or down below water level if you don't mind going through the liner.

    • @jeffn7939
      @jeffn7939 8 років тому

      Can you guide me on where I can get more detailed information on these systems. I would like to keep all the plumbing from being visible if possible. Also wondering what kind of fitting I would use to go through the liner below water level.

    So is your under gravel system just a grid of pvc with holes drilled into it. covered with gravel and hooked to a pump? Just like a aquarium. I think I like this idea... I would have never thought of that. Being a DIYer this sounds easy. Maybe hooked to a 55g floating media container. (fluidized filter K1) Someday I will have my African pond. Before we try and guess as to how the koi found itself in the family swimming pool, we should first understand if there are other koi jumping back in the pond. When you see your Koi jump, it most likely means that something is bothering them and it is usually a water quality issue or a parasite. In most cases, fish jump for all of the same reasons they might flash. So please… the owner should first check for other fish jumping and flashing and if this is the case… look for parasites or some other water quality issues.
    Once the fish jumped out of the pond… I should think it was only dumb luck he ended up alive and well in the swimming pool. However, people should also realize that if this happens, especially on a day that isn’t really hot outside, koi have been known to survive for up to an hour out of the water. They’re not like human beings where we would die without air after just five minutes. Sometimes I’ll have to sedate a fish with oil of clove to work on an ulcer or repair an open wound… and it’s not uncommon to have the fish out of the water under sedation for 10 minutes. Under the right conditions… a koi can live much longer than you think out of the water (but please… don’t test us on this fact… just take our word for it.)
    As an aside… there are studies that have found that some fish can “sense” larger bodies of water if they’re very close by. And some species have been known to try and move from a smaller body of water to the larger one. Who knows… maybe koi can do the same.

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  9 років тому

      ***** On a side note when a koi is sedated and out of water for a prolonged period of time, a small airline sized tube should be flowing water over the gills of the koi while the vet performs any necessary procedures. I assisted Dr. Eric Johnson with this back in 2006. It was an amazing experience!

    • @DaveOonUTube
      @DaveOonUTube 9 років тому

      ThePondDigger That's a fantastic idea, Eric. I've had to work on dozens of sedated koi from the Hanover Koi Farm in Hanover PA. I've always been concerned about my taking too long to apply a patch on ulcers or doing detailed inspections and scrapings. I'll give it a try.

  • @toreandersson3852
    @toreandersson3852 9 років тому

    Probably a bird. I doubt it jumped since there is no reason for it to jump.
    I have a story around this so I tell it to you !
    When I reconstructed my pond and filled it up with water again I had all my fishes jumping from the new pond to the old. There is a level distance between the two (connected) ponds and I had to stop filling water since it was really late at night. At the time I stopped filling water the water was streaming from the old pond to the new pond much like a waterfall. The water between the ponds was much to shallow to be able to swim in it. The filtration pump pumped water from the new pond and through the filtration system and a build waterfall the water was put back in the old pond. Therefore the level distance between the ponds became a new natural waterfall.
    Since the new pond is much deeper all the fishes was placed in the new pond wile filling up. Anyways when I woke up in the morning the day after, all the fishes had jumped through the naturally created waterfall into the old pond (approx 1 meter). My first thought was - "lucky them it was enough water in the old pond" because there could have been no way for them to know that.

    I'm so sad!!! I accidentally killed our only koi fish yesterday, or at least I think so! So anyway, yesterday, I realized that the water level in our pond was really low! So low that it was only a little puddle. So then, only being 12 years old, I told my mom that I would fill the pond up. I told my dad that I was going to fill up the pond, and he thought I was responsible enough. So anyways, this morning, my dad woke me up and told me that I had KILLED the koi fish, and that I had left the water running, and it supposedly overflowed onto the wires for the waterfall and ELECTROCUTED THE FISH!!!! I'm still quite curious if the fish was killed from electrocution, or if it was killed from the shock of running water for about 12 hours! THE POND LOOKS LIKE A LAKE NOW! I was so embarrassed!
