    We're fast approaching the extinction of umpires because they've managed to go from "humanly-flawed" to "complete crap but we're untouchable gods."

  • @retiredatforty
    @retiredatforty 5 місяців тому +1

    It’s largely a rule problem, and mostly stems from bad calls at the plate. The idea that you can’t calmly say, “C’mon, that one was a little low, Bob” without being tossed is insane. Especially in an era of computers giving us instant feedback on each call behind the plate.
    They should put up on the Jumbotron every pitch immediately after the call, including the box drawn onscreen, so the umpires get immediate feedback and tighten up their calls themselves. That alone would stop a lot of this. The players see their errors writ large on the Jumbotron, so why not the umps’?

  • @tqnohe

    A couple of weeks ago, Jomboy featured an ejection where the umpire threw someone out. “Who? Who did you throw out?” He had simply pointed at the dugout and tossed someone out. “I don’t know. Someone has to go.”
    “Who?”
    He had no idea.
    These ejections come with fines and sometimes suspensions. Umpires must have a damned good reason or they need to pay the fine. “Looking at me with a smile on his face after I made a questionable call” (aka showing me up) is not a good reason.

    that jt ejection in SPRING TRAINING was the worst one i’ve ever seen in my life so absurdly bad. Umpires have just become toxic and want to control the game these days it’s just so annoying because of the point you made people come to watch in person or on tv to watch their favorite players when they get thrown out then the umpires completely take the fun out the game and people start to lose interest. The stupidest ejection that I have heard about is thatan umpire makes an ejection motion but doesn't know who he ejected. After they realized no one should be ejected they stated that someone "needs" to be ejected from the game and told the manager just to choose someone in the dugout to be ejected.

  • @hammerhiem75
    @hammerhiem75 7 місяців тому +24

    99% of ejections are fully deserved.
    Mostly because Players and managers are utterly ignorant of the rules. In reality MLB have a out of control players/Mangers problem. As an example Torey Lovullo got ejected yesterday arguing a pitch that was literally Middle Middle. The ammount of players that lose their minds over a pitch either correct or within a half inch of being correct is insane.
    That said I agree that the 1% of bad Ejections should have reprecussions.

      That number is way too high. Umps pull the ejection handle far too often. The thing is there is zero menaningful oversight.
      My solution? Make umps stay after the game to hand-write a report justifying ejections to the Commissioner. If its not worth the ump's time to write it up afterward, its not worth the ejection. The reports can even be secret. Just make the umps think "Is this worth 15 minutes and writer's cramp?"

  • @Traestaree
    @Traestaree 7 місяців тому +27

    I'm 43 seconds in and you've already made a key incorrect assertion - there are rules governing ejections, and after watching every single ejection this season on close call sports, all but maybe 2 were the result of one of these rules being violated, with the other two being ejections that were because the umpire thought the player or manager violated a rule and didn't bother checking to see if it was in fact that player or manager.

    • @peskytalk
      @peskytalk  7 місяців тому +3

      Did I say anywhere that most ejections aren’t justified? If I did I didn’t mean to, most of them definitely are, like at least 90% of them, BUT the “rules” stopping ejections can be broken literally whenever the umpire feels like it. There’s no one really governing them. Even if they do after the game A LITTLE BIT, it could still ruin a game because of how they reacted in the moment.

    Umpire get their feelings hurt waaaaaaaay to easy, it’s like they are teenage girls.
    I officiate football and basketball, have done so for the last 20 years. In that time span, In basketball - I have tossed 2 coaches and 3 players. In football, none for conduct but a few for illegal hits to the head.
    Yes, it’s two different sports compared to baseball but as an official - setting the tone by making the correct call sets the tone.
    I actually had a conversation with a former umpire asking me why I didn’t toss a player because he started using colorful metaphors at me, I simply told him I don’t take it personal, he is just upset and warning him before I “T” him up usually helps the situation or telling him I will watch for it next time or admit you missed the call.
    MLB needs to tell their umpires to stop getting their hurt.

    Excellent video. You should do a video on umpires who touch players and managers. If a player or manager cannot make contact with an umpire, wtf gives the umpires the right to touch players? Laz Diaz is the biggest culprit. If a manager argues with an umpire, there is no reason for another umpire to intervene. Let them argue like men. It seems as if the umpire needs his bf or bff to bail him out. The manager has the right to argue, so the umpire should hear him out instead of walking away while the other umpire blocks or holds the manager. Umpires have become soft wussies.

    As a general rule, professional baseball players and managers have never been the brightest bulbs on the planet, and more and more of them have attitudes as well. I'm an umpire that works high school games and down (and some adult leagues, not professional) and in 13 seasons, I'll bet I've ejected less than 6 players/coaches. I don't want to effect the game, and if I handle an objection properly, it rarely escalates. Realizing that, yeah, I might have made a questionable judgement call, I can see the side of the players/coaches involved. As long as I'm approached with a little respect, I can let them vent. Name calling, swearing AT me, and similar action probably won't be tolerated. Be angry, but be respectful. I've had wayyyyyyyy too many partners want to eject people.

    I htink the best solution is to create some clearly defined rules on what offenses constitute and ejection. For example, in the NHL, if a player instigates a fight, is called for a 5 minute major match penalty (attempting to injure an opponent), or a penalty with an automatic game misconduct attached to it, the player's gone, otherwise, the refs have no authority to boot a player from the game. Same goes for Soccer, Football, Basketball, etc, they all have clear rules surrounding ejections that's not just the ref "felt like it".

    • @justinmiller5660
      @justinmiller5660 7 місяців тому

      um, i get what your saying but in hockey if you instigate a fight is a 5 min fighting and a 2 min instigator. you don't get tossed from the game. at most a player will get a 10 min misconduct for yelling at a ref, but the refs have very thick skin in the NHL.

    The umpires have a massive ego problem and MLB needs to step in and fire umpires one by one and clean house until they get the message. I am wondering if minor league umpires have this massive ego? They are off to a good start getting rid of Angel Hernandez. Now CB Buckner and others must go. A manager or player can not even speak to them anymore. As you say in the video, If I pay money to see a game, I would not want to have a star I pay to see be ejected in the first inning.

    First off, this is one of the biggest reasons I don't like baseball! Second, if you want to change it, just sending it to a vote among the other refs will not change anything, due to biases within refs. If a lead and seasoned ref decides to throw out someone, then the rest of the refs will likely vote with them just to keep their job (in most accounts). If you want to change this policy, first be clear in the rule book what would qualify an ejection. Then, set up an unbias committee to look into the circumstances surrounding the ejection, and punish the ref who made the call. And if enough bad calls are made, then a firing of the ump! If a player can get cut for bad play, then the refs should also, and this should be all sports not just baseball!

    I was an umpire for an 8u coach pitch game. Keep in mind, i was 14. This coach that i had thrown out, wasn't even a coach, he was the commissioner of this team. Keep in mind that this coach was one of the rudest and most unintelligent person i have ever met. He started arguing a foul tip call, (him saying it was a foul) and it was clear that the ball was on the ground, as the batter swung above his head. He started going on a rant saying that I have to be at least 18. The rule in my county says that all umpires can be 13 or over. He dropped one F- bomb, i warned him. he said "You're just a kid, you have no authority." and then proceeded to curse me out. At this point the only thing I said was "Sir, You're going to be embarrassed if you do not stop" he says "Try me mother f---er" so I threw him out. Funny how a kid can act more mature than adults.

    Players and coaches know what they're doing when they get tossed 99 percent of the time... Pete Rose was ejected on a day the stadium was handing out posters of him. He was ejected bc he told the umpire he needed to go back to umpire school. After the game, he sent an autographed poster to the umpire with the message, keep up the good work. It was the umpire's first season and Rose was testing him... These are professionals who have spent their lives around the game... They know you can't argue balls and strikes. They know if they walk away while they say something inappropriate it will make the umpire look bad to the crowd when they get tossed. They know you can't showboat (like dragging an on deck circle after being instructed to stand on it) ... these men know what they're doing and when you start bashing the umpires for doing their job, congratulations, you have been successfully manipulated by those players... ...all that being said, mistakes are made and we've seen a couple this year with judge getting tossed for the Fan's words and the catcher getting tossed for moving his glove... But those were legit mistakes that were understandable from the umpire's perspective... I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of mechanic by which to undo an ejection for cases like those, but they are truly outliers... They know what they are doing when they get themselves tossed...
