Just to be clear, the Lancaster nicknamed "Vera" that is flown by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and is seen in this video, is NOT the same Lancaster that was on the pedestal by Lake Ontario. The CWHM Lancaster is Lancaster number FM213. It was purchased by the CWHM in 1979, was restored to flight status by 1988 and has been flying regularly ever since. The Lancaster that was on the pedestal is Lancaster number FM104. It sat on the pedestal until 1999. In 2018, after several years in storage, it was transferred to the British Columbia Aviation Museum where they are apparently hoping to restore it to airworthy status as well. If they do manage to get it flying again, then with any luck it will mean that in a few years, there might be as many as 4 flying Lancsters in the world. The two seen in this video, PA474 nicknamed "Thumper" and FM213 nicknamed "Vera" as well as Lancaster number NX611 nicknamed "Just Jane", which has been undergoing restoration in the UK for the last several years and will hopefully be flight worthy in 2020. And FM104 if it can be restored to airworthy status. I've got my fingers crossed that at some point in the future I'll be able to see a 4 plane Lancaster formation flying overhead.
Sorry no that Lancaster is in British Columbia now. The Canadian Lanc is out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I was part of a group that was trying to have the Toronto Lanc restored and put back on display.
Barry simply has his lakes muddled up. FM213 was displayed on a pylon in Ontario until 1979 (at Goderich which is adjacent to Lake Huron) prior to re-build by Canadian Warplane Heritage.
My God , these is once in a lifetime to see and hear two of the last air worthy Lancaster bombers flying in the sky .A lovely tribute to the men that did not make it back home .
Makes the hair on my neck stand up . Thanks Canada 🇨🇦 for lending your Lancaster to us hope we can do the same so you get to see and hear them together 🇨🇦🇬🇧
Amazing still brings a lump to my throat, my grandad flew during WW2, mum could never remember if fighters or bombers as she was only little herself, well before i was born, but he was only of the lucky ones that came home she said, kudos to all the brave souls that fought for our freedom, air/sea/land. We all owe you a debt that can never be repaid, and yes you ALL should be remembered.
I was there on that day! Still sends a shiver down my spine now seeing those two beautiful birds flying together. How special it was to see the only two airworthy Lancs in the world. Unforgettable. #we will always remember them.
My father flew in a Lancaster Pathfinder more than 60 times during the War as a mid-upper gunner. The sound of the Merlin engines makes me thing of him every time. R.I.P dad! We who came after owe you all so much.
My father did like wise . 467 squadron pathfinders , out of Grimsby , 35 missions , tail and mid-upper gunner . I still have his log books . It records a crash landing back in Britain ... having had an engine taken completely out of the wing over Germany . He volunteered , he had been serving in the AIF in Egypt .
VeRA and Thumper, the last two Avro Lancasters in flight. Be nice if Thumper could come across the Atlantic in the near future and have a reunion with VeRA. I've have both Lancasters on a DVD that I purchased online from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, at the end of October, when they flew together in England. It's fabulous!!
I live in Hamilton, Ontario and we have one of the Lancaster’s at our airport and it flies around on weekends. People can pay for a flight. Amazes me the sound of the one plane. Couldn’t imagine a squadron of theme. Beautiful machine.
...If you are hearing them take off or land in England. Or, if you are hearing operation Manna dropping food shipments into the Netherlands. Hearing hundreds of them flying overhead in Berlin probably wasn't a "sweet" feeling.
Thank you so much for filming and sharing! My favourite things - BBMF with added bonus of the Canadian Lancaster and Beachy Head Lighthouse! I'll share on our Keep the Stripes FB group and Twitter account. Shirley
I live near Hamilton Ontario Canada and see VeRA fly over our house nearly every Saturday at around 11am. They have many beautifully restored air craft in airworthy condition that fly all summer and into the fall. There was a fire in their hangar years ago that destroyed a few of the aircraft including a Hawker Hurricane. Luckily they were able to get VeRA out away from the fire. They rebuilt the museum and now it’s open for visitors year round and offer flights to the public in most of the planes including the Lancaster
Saw them both at Southport airshow which was at the end of the flying calender that year. The Canadian had an engine out but still flew... Aswome sight and sound. R. I. P allied aircrew who never did see the blighty coastline one last time.
I took the kids to see VERA when it was over and for those from Canada reading this, I can’t tell you how much it meant, how deep the crowds were or how long the traffic jams. Two Lancasters together is really something but the very knowledgeable crowds were there because of the sacrifice of that generation, of the time when the UK and Canada were joined at the hip. Indivisible under God in the face of unspeakable tyranny. The RAF Museum in North London acknowledges that it is impossible to overstate the contribution Canada made to WWII, and it truly is. Both World Wars in fact. A Mari Usque Ad Mare. God save the Queen!
I live in Toronto, so I get the pleasure of seeing our Lancaster flying over the city during the summer when Warplane Heritage is doing rides. You can always hear the unmistakable sound of her Merlins long before she comes into view.
Went to the Shoreham air show the year before the disaster, both these beauties were supposed to be there, but due to mechanical issues only one of them turned up. Then a few weeks later on a sunny Sunday afternoon they both unexpectedly flew over our house in Worthing. Amazing sight! And then... My sister lives in a village near Sywell in Northamptonshire. Turns out they were forever practicing formation flights over her house and she was sick to death of the sight of them. She also got fed up with the Vulcan flying over her house as well! I need to get a new sister! Lol
I realise now that when my father flew these machines in WW2, he was experiencing the ultimate power of his time, consisted of skill, instinct, timing, incredible sounds, hope, fear, luck, thrill and terror. I was a world champion athlete with an experience founded on several of the above, except three items. Luck, the sounds and the terror. No wonder he never talked about it.
Lovely indeed sham the wind yesterday meant they didn't get that close= ( Still an awesome sight even in all that wind yesterday. Still with Dunsfold next weekend and Shoreham after that still plenty of chances.
Very nice, great too see and excellent video skills. I think it's actually 9 Merlins and a Griffon though, looks to be the Spitfire PRXIX 'The Last' on the right of the formation.
I don’t have any Lancaster parts , but I have Haiifax parts from Trenton when they rebuilt the plane that went down in 🇳🇴 . I was fortunate to hear stories from Lancaster pilots, navigators and gunners in many legions many years ago . Beer was on me . They were all humble men, some horrified what they had to do. War is pain and suffering , yet it still continues today .
The Canadian one always flew behind the RAF one except the day when the Canadians went home. That day they took off from RAF Coningsby for a short tour around the area, both Lancasters and two fighters. The Canadians led that formation until they broke off to head north and home. Just wait until the Pantons get NX611 airbourne, then the Canadians must come back and for a three ship season.
It is reported that 17 Lancasters survive, with only these two being air worthy. I cannot tell you what I experienced watching this! Does this mean that none of the other 15 will ever be air worthy? Just wondering. Thank you so very much for this.
@Bud Fields Restoring a Lancaster to flying condition and then keeping it in that condition requires enormous resources. The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight is part of the Royal Air Force, so the facilities are in place to keep the aircraft in the air, but the Canadian aircraft project requires private funding. A long time ago I saw photos of the Canadian aircraft at the start of its restoration. The interior was a mess and someone had posted a notice saying "Start anywhere. It all has to be done". Two more Lancasters, one each in Britain and Canada, are being restored to flying condition.
There one at the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta just south of Calgary. There were 5 Commonwealth Air Training airfields in the area during the war. Every summer they bring it out of the hanger and fire up the four engines. If I recall correctly, I recently read the volunteers at the museum are working to restore a Mosquito to airworthiness.
Yes... Imagine the sound of all those merlin engines, must have been frightening on the ground in Germany and occupied territories at that time as it was for the UK.
We love Vera over here so I have a feeling she'll fly for a long time. I lived in the city where the lancaster is taking care of and I can tell you she's the darling of the city.
actually thats true avro lancasters mk I II III were built in england but the mk x avro lancasters were built in canada to help england for out shortage of avro lancasters

Frankly this is extremely emotional. Such heroism. The sound!
This wonderful sound gets me every time. ❤

It's so beautiful seeing the two Lancasters flying together
Makes the hair on my neck stand up . Thanks Canada 🇨🇦 for lending your Lancaster to us hope we can do the same so you get to see and hear them together 🇨🇦🇬🇧
I've seen and heard the Canadian one up close. I would love to have seen both of these together. Magnificent.
Ten Merlins! What a sound! 😍
I have heard VERA a number of times. I can’t imagine what it was like when hundreds of them were in the sky.

My dad was a sergeant air gunner in a Lancaster Mark 1 and two of the crew were Canadian.

I don't know if you know but There is a third Lancaster that is supposed to approve for being Airworthy soon. This third one is called Just Jane
Wish I could set this as my alarm clock. Start the day right by listening to pure freedom
I live in Hamilton, Ontario and we have one of the Lancaster’s at our airport and it flies around on weekends. People can pay for a flight. Amazes me the sound of the one plane. Couldn’t imagine a squadron of theme. Beautiful machine.
The most sweetest sound in the world
...If you are hearing them take off or land in England. Or, if you are hearing operation Manna dropping food shipments into the Netherlands. Hearing hundreds of them flying overhead in Berlin probably wasn't a "sweet" feeling.
The sound of freedom right there.
Thank you so much for filming and sharing! My favourite things - BBMF with added bonus of the Canadian Lancaster and Beachy Head Lighthouse! I'll share on our Keep the Stripes FB group and Twitter account. Shirley

Were these the ones salvaged from the bottom of the sea floor???? I heard the Brit’s got theirs flying!!!!!!
Awesome sound! Enough to bring a tear to a glass eye
they flew down the Thames estuary and right over my house on the way there, magnificent sight and as someone else said brought a tear to my eyes.
loud and proud
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! No other words can describe this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As usual, a nice video but extra special to see the Canadian Lanc fly with the UK Lanc.
nothing like seeing the Lancaster Bombers with the Famous Hurricane & Spitfire flying together
True, except theres no Hurricane here
I live in Toronto, so I get the pleasure of seeing our Lancaster flying over the city during the summer when Warplane Heritage is doing rides. You can always hear the unmistakable sound of her Merlins long before she comes into view.
Was für ein Sound der Rolls-Royce Motoren

F'ing brilliant.
Shivers all over my body seeing and hearing this.
Amazing. Would love to see them in person
Great vid, love the sound of lancasters! Brilliant! Liked
Gotta love that sound
The sound from just two of them* imagine the 1000 bomber raids
Just what I was thinking.
Snap !....hard to imagine the glorious din of all those Merlin's and Hercules engines
What’s cooler than that 2 vintage bombers with escort once in a lifetime stuff great video
I thought there was only one Lancy flying. Damn good stuff. The more the better.
Stunning !!!
What a beautiful sight
That was fantastic and I did not want it to end!

Beautiful piece of photography .
Lovely indeed sham the wind yesterday meant they didn't get that close= ( Still an awesome sight even in all that wind yesterday.
Still with Dunsfold next weekend and Shoreham after that still plenty of chances.
Hopefully I am still around to see it, do my bit to help get Just Jane airworthy and then there will be three Lanc's airborne
Canada is also working on getting another lanc airworthy so we may be up to four one day!
"The MUSIC of the MERLIN'S"!
Simply superb!
To the person who gave this a ''thumbs down'.. It must be horrible being You.
Excellent .... great to see ..... thanks
wonderful thanks made me choke up..
Very nice, great too see and excellent video skills. I think it's actually 9 Merlins and a Griffon though, looks to be the Spitfire PRXIX 'The Last' on the right of the formation.
I also heard the Canadian lancaster has packard engines oops :)
Wonkabar007 C-GVRA has Packard Merlin 224's. So yes Packard built, but based on the same engine.
***** Yes I believe Packard did improvements to the Merlin, making it more powerful and faster to build them during WW2.
soaringtractor Nobody cares Wilbur you draft dodging coward.
well said.
This video gave me a nice feeling 😊
ART OF NOISE, ART OF ENGINEERING
Imagine this x 100 or x 200 in formation :o
I don’t have any Lancaster parts , but I have Haiifax parts from Trenton when they rebuilt the plane that went down in 🇳🇴 . Both are in extremely good shape - impossible to tell from a distance which is the Canadian one and which is the UK one....

The Canadian aircraft has the mid-upper turret mounted further forward. The turret is also smaller than that of the British aircraft.
@@MarsFKA Correct. It is a Martin turret with twin .50 calibre machine guns
There's not much that sounds better than a Merlin - except 10 of 'em!
It is reported that 17 Lancasters survive, with only these two being air worthy. I cannot tell you what I experienced watching this! Does this mean that none of the other 15 will ever be air worthy? Just wondering. Thank you so very much for this.
There may be a second Cdn lancaster that has a potential to become airworthy. It's also surprising to see how many of the lancs are in Canada!

Just superb...well Filmed...
This plane is the greatest plane in history and its British
Phenomenal!
I remember the Canadian bomber fly over Regina years ago.. It was about 500 ft off the deck…
The sound of freedom.
Will be seeing these guys at bournemouth
I have seen the british one nany a time at an airshow every year in my town and another time in a hanger in Lincolnshire
10 Merlins in one place
#wewillrememberthem these brave men who were so badly treated after the war
Imagine hundreds of them?
What must of been like to see 1000 of these coming at you
Yes... Imagine the sound of all those merlin engines, must have been frightening on the ground in Germany and occupied territories at that time as it was for the UK.
Hello! very impresiv
Awesome!!
seagull at 0:34 next to leading Lancaster having to break off due to running low on earthworm's.
Awesome
Can you imagine the sound of 100 of them passing over as they head off on a mission ?
These are the last two left flying.
We love Vera over here so I have a feeling she'll fly for a long time. I lived in the city where the lancaster is taking care of and I can tell you she's the darling of the city.
I have heard that there is a long-tern project underway to get Just Jane flying again.
I’ve used to live near the airfield where they kept the Canadian Lancaster we have the night raid one and you Brits have the day raid paint job
You lucky so-and-so
Conjures Elgar’s Nimrod Enigma Variation for me, even before the Dieppe movie with Tom Hardy.
Will they be taking the tour to Germany?
No, they did that in the 40's.
If only they put all 16 spitfires up with them. The sound would be incredible
Seagull- think I shall join the formation - err no I wont!
Pov your a young 40s boy on a walk and you here these doing a routine flight check
sound's of victory
God bless the commonwealth troops who flew them.
No engine sounds as good as a Merlin!
Lost for words
Just imagine a whole Sqn
actually thats true avro lancasters mk I II III were built in england but the mk x avro lancasters were built in canada to help england for out shortage of avro lancasters
A total of 10 unrestricted V-12 engines. No other sound like it!
👌👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍✋✋✋
What's better than 4 merlins?
Answer: 10 merlins!!!!
9 Merlins and a Griffon!
Ruhr didn’t like this sound
The US almost borrowed a Lancaster to bomb Hiroshima.
Mark Felton does an excellent doc on this....would have included air to air refuellimg....
Not if you are a German in 1945
