    I'd buy a 2CV today. Some things should've never stopped being manufactured. Cassettes and vinyl records are making a comeback, why not old car models?
    Jay Leno himself said that it is a lot more fun to drive a slow car slowly than it is to drive a fast car at fast speeds.

    Love my 2CV Charleston, I've owned it for 17 years and still get a kick out of driving it around the hills of San Francisco and East Bay every time! Took it down the "most crooked street" Lombard in SF which was so appropriate for a car like that! Had a lot of stares and thumbs up from well wishers. The best part of driving over the Golden Gate Bridge is doing it with the roof open ;)

    The 2cv gearbox was laid out like that so that the most used gears (2nd & 3rd) would be on a simple push-pull plane.

    • @leneanderthalien
      @leneanderthalien 3 роки тому +2

      2 & 3 gear the most use? not for me: i did drive most on roads, so use at most 3 & 4...2-3 is more use in mountain roads, 1' on the steepest, but it climb!

    • @joewilson941
      @joewilson941 3 роки тому +2

      Reverse & First gear are on the same plain for parking ease, imagine parallel parking - backwards & forwards. Town gears on the middle plain & overdrive... 4th for use on the motorway. Also note - you can simply go from 3rd across to forth without needing to go into neutral. Next top tip - lose the grip of death on the ball... The gearstick is spring loaded so that it automatically centers, just use palm to push forwards. Being now on my 4th lefty, that gearstick ball feels so much more natural in the right hand! As these cars should be! I own a 1974 Ami8 berline & a 1978 Dyane6, the 2cv's sadly unmentioned derivative siblings, I'm not sure how the Ami6 didn't get a mention when it actually outsold the 2cv in France in the 60s becoming the new people's car & indeed a friend.

    • @dnickegmx
      @dnickegmx 3 місяці тому

      it's pretty simple: the gear shift layout is a classic 3-speed gearshift (like those in many 1930s cars) with additional 4th gear

I remember an aunt and uncle buying a brand new red and white Dolly.. It was way cooler than my parents Volvo 340's. After 33 years and 185,000 miles from new in my 1990 series Charleston I have gone for a power upgrade... The original 602 cc replaced with a Burton 652 cc plus 'Power Tube' and bigger jets in the carbie...
    10% more horsepower plus 20% more torque... There is now a throaty roar to be discovered once it has its 700 mile initial service this week.. I was restricted to 4,000 rpm = 50 mph.
    For the next 1300 miles I can use 5,000 rpm. And then go power hungry with 6,000 rpm...
    I have been addicted to 2CV6s since 1978 when I worked for a year in the UK before sending my 1-year-old 2CV6 home to Australia in pieces, as I was using my single import license on a large tax free Pommie motor carriage. Two friends in Sydney reassembled it for me.
    3 x 2CVs and 330,000 miles of joyous adventures... Now I am aged 70 this 652 cc motor will see me out.... Left in my will to my younger brother....

    I had a 1972 Dyane 6 in the late 70's and loved it. Fantastic car. I followed that with an old Ami 8 Estate, also an early 70's example. Again, an absolute blast. Then in the late 80's I had a Portuguese built (as they all were by then) 2CV Special. The thing I remember about the 80's 2CV is how much less 'roly poly' the car was compared with the 70's version, things had been firmed up a bit. Still hilarious though and extreme. Absolutely brilliant cars and very clever too.
    I'm driving a C3 Aircross as my main vehicle and there's hints in it that Citroën are getting their individuality back a bit.
    I've had a 1970 Fiat 500L for the past 7 years - 21 bhp no less - and it too is another brilliant piece of design and engineering; proof too that no company makes genuinely small cars these days, even a Smart is bigger! Strangled by regulations of course.
    Except of course......the new Citroen Ami...hmm, now there's a thought. (Okay, it's a quadricycle so different rules) As you say, everyone should experience a 2CV at some stage in their life.
    Great review, enjoyed it.

    Drove my Dyane to Croatia and used it there for two years during the war, at the end of contract I flew back having left her parked beside the road near a friends house thinking to return in the summer, unfortunately some hoodlums turned it upside down and pulled the wheels off and she was taken for scrap. Absolutely Fabulously True.
    The most fun you can have with the least.. More Smiles per Mile.
    Gears.. Parking and manoeuvring plane on the bottom.. 1st & Reverse.
    Most used plane in the middle.. Straight in and out for 2nd & 3rd.
    Top plane for cruising. 4th is an overdrive so you can go insanely fast on a downhill without over revving le petite moteur..
    My 1990 2CV6 Charleston will do 115 kph on the flat, but I once recorded 135 kph on the GPS on a very long downill with a tail wind. 25 kph over the max motorway speed in Eastern Australia... Much to the amazement of every car and truck that I flew past. Yippee..
    And it is stable at that speed as long as you avoid big cross winds.

    CV is the acronym for Cheveaux, horses in french.
    2 CV, 2 cheveaux, 2 horses.
    For information, the unit of measurement for power is Watt: 1 horse = 736 W.

    • @slome815
      @slome815 2 роки тому

      Cheveaux vapeur though, it referred to fiscal horsepower, not normal horse power. The earliest had 9hp, and the last 29hp. A 2hp car would be barely usable.
      In my opinion the 602cc 29hp model is the only one thats viable if you want to drive on highways regularly

The Land Rover was launched the same year and was in production to 2016. 67 or 68 years! The Beetle? 1938 to 2003. 65 years. The VW is often quoted as the longest-running production car on a single platform. A great fun debate. The Land Rover chassis remained pretty well the same from 1948 to 2016...! All good fun only. The world is retro crazy for old cars and Citroen resolutely refuse to build a modern 2cv!Its design principles are still relevant today.Small engine and basic for everyone.......

    • @leneanderthalien
      @leneanderthalien 3 роки тому

      The truth is that Citroën CANNOT built a modern 2cv because the passive safety law (crash test and sommeting), Was the same cause who did avoid Citroën to modernize a bit the engine to fit the emission laws: use the 652cc 35hp from the Visa (with electronic ignition and single point injection+ cat) was considered in 1990, but need a new approval and this was impossible= was the end from the story...(some export 2cv's to germany was built with motorcycle catalisators and oxydation air injection, to reduce the emissions and fit euro 1) .
      And make a 2cv like the new beetle is a non sense: was only a "2cv looking" car but without the advantages from the real 2cv...
