To have the doctor's life fail to stop the sun creature for it then to be defeated by a leaf was such a let down. I honestly think that if they'd changed that one thing this episode would be remembered a lot more fondly.
Honestly if it was a doctor-isnt-complete-without-his-companion situation, where Clara steps in to complete his story as his symbolic other half, Id mind it a lot less. As is, it feels a lot like Clara-centric fanfiction, and while I love Jenna Coleman's performance a lot of her time on the show has that slightly overpowering effect.
You're underestimating all the positivity held in that leaf compared to, by contrast, all the pain and suffering in the Doctor's life. It's not surprising that the leaf succeeded where he didn't.
If I'm not mistaken, the Doctor's pain and memories were almost enough to defeat Akhaten, the leaf just tipped the scales the slightest bit in their favour. Maybe I'm wrong, I love the story though :)
I always just headcanon that the only reason the leaf worked is because of Clara being the Impossible Girl. The leaf being filled with her psychic energy and all of the many lives she lived throughout the series, coupled with the one long, single life that the Doctor lived, was enough to bring the Sun God down. Jumping into the Doctor's time stream and splitting herself across time retroactively affected the psychic imprint, allowing her to accomplish something that should've been impossible. Just add a line of the Doctor wondering how she did it and having no explanation (since he lacks the info required) and it adds to the mystery of Clara at the time. It's not perfect, but it works comfortably for me.

Great episode but deeply flawed. At the end, the planet's heat- and light-source ups sticks and naffs off which would turn the entire planet and all its inhabitants, including the little girl they've just saved, into ice cubes 😜
