@@judsonkr In reality, no one knows for sure exactly what is going on in a dog’s mind. So, saying someone is wrong, is just your opinion. But, like many here, I choose to believe my pups love me when they lick or give me kisses. I have had two GSD’s that also lean into you. I've had many dogs through the years, and in my 60 yrs on this planet, I have come to the realization that my dogs licked my face, hands, head, neck, etc., for a multitude of reasons, including, but not limited to: showing affection, welcoming you home after work or being away, to get whatever sweat or salty residue might be on my skin, trying to get my attention (probably to be let outside), waking me up if something is happening in or outside our home. There's nothing "NOT cute" about it. I loved all my dogs, and I know they loved me, 'cause they would get up from where they were and move closer to me no matter what room I'm in. Begs the question if it is not affection, have you ever seen a dog lick the face or hands of somebody that they dog didn't like? Of course not.

@@WandersonRC3 From my own experience with 7 dogs over several decades, I have not had that happen to me, to the best of my recollection. Of course, my dogs all had large yards to run around in, so we seldom went to a park; we just played in the yard. Further, I would discourage mine from eating poop for obvious reasons and they were well fed with food, treats and, gasp, table scraps.

He also has many doggie behaviors I asked him why do dogs like our face? He said many reasons but he thinks the main one is they are showing love. When I look my dog in the face an talk to him in a loving voice and pet him, he ALWAYS responds by licking my face and only my face, for a long time and wags his tail and seems very happy. Yes there could be other reasons but IMO that's the main one. I've never seen a dog lick anyone's face who they didn't like/love.

It's true that there are many reasons dogs might lick their owners, and it's not always easy to pinpoint just one. Dogs can lick for affection, to show submission, to get attention, or even because they like the taste of our skin. It might also be a way for them to communicate their needs, like hunger.
Paying attention to the context when your dog licks you can give you more clues. Is it close to their mealtime, or are they trying to get your attention for a cuddle? Each dog is unique, and their behavior can vary. You're right that more research can help us understand our furry friends better, but sometimes, it's also about knowing your own dog's personality and habits.
In any case, it's important to look at the whole picture and understand the context rather than relying on one explanation. Your insights are valuable and remind us to always question and learn more about our beloved pets. 🐾😊

First about 'eating grass' moment. When predator catches a pray, which is fed by eating grass, he eats stomach first. Their stomachs are able to transform food ( grass and greenery) into very rare vitamins, which all animals needed. When meat - eater as a dog, has no possibility to catch a pray and get these vitamins, they eating grass themselves instead. As far as I now some cancer treatment methods in Mexican clinics are based on this finding. So,it is nothing to do with anxiety.
Our dogs licking us when they are feeling grateful ( after getting food or drink) or wants some cuddles, expressing some feelings to us,etc.. They're not looking for a food from anyones mouths ( other way around ,bringing to us something very dear to them, special toy or tasty food). Also I can feel their very special feelings to us sometimes. I would call it love. You can call whatever you want.
Today is 3 years as my late springador Trixie passed away. She was battling cancer and moment she died I felt how something breaks apart from my soul ( or essence, whatever you call it ). It was physical feeling and I knew that moment she's gone. We had very strong bond in between us, she was my velcro dog,my companion. So,to believe in such things as food from mouth or grass for anxiety, you need to understand nothing about this beautiful gift from God.

I'm quite sure the licking is a message of "I'm no threat to you, please don't hurt me, I don't want any trouble right now." but its easy for humans to put it in their own terms and just say its kisses or affection which is fine too, and natural. But at it's core it's like how a horse foal will gape it's mouth at another adult "please don't hurt me, I'm just a baby."

Licking can be a form of contact for a dog or cat like someone touching you. When I scratch my dog on his chest, he gets this content, relaxed look and starts licking my hand. It's like he is petting me back.

That's a beautiful way to look at it! Licking can indeed be a form of affectionate contact, similar to how we touch or pet our pets. Your dog’s response to your affection shows the special bond you share. It's heartwarming to see how our furry friends express their love in their unique ways.

The lickings part isn't true because some dogs do lick, cuddle, or rub to show affection. When my dog wants me to pet him he will look at me and cry, and start petting me. If I stop, he pets me again to get my attention. And when I'm petting him, he licks my hand. Maybe he's grooming me? Maybe I taste good? But either way it's not just because he wants food or likes my taste.

Some dogs can smell cancer. There was a case of a white woman in New Zealand whose dog kept licking her ankle, particularly on and around a small mole there. She became really annoyed by his behaviour and brought him over to veterinarian for a neurological examination. The vet assured her that HE was fine, but told HER to see a dermatologist to have her ankle skin checked straight away. Turns out she was in the early stages of malignant melanoma, they nipped it in the bud, and her dog (and that vet) saved her life!

Dogs lick for multiple reasons. They may smell something that interests them on your body like food on your mouth, lotion, or another animals scent that you just rubbed. But dogs also show affection and expressions through their mouths. For instance if they’re hot they’ll pant because that’s how they cool down, or if they want your attention they’ll grab your hand with their mouth or play bite to tell you they want to play. Dogs use their mouths for many purposes, including licking because their tastebuds are super enhanced and they taste 10 times greater than humans, plus your scent and taste is a way to them remembering you.

My pit is just full of licker, as I call it, because all he wants to do is lean on me, a dogs hug, and lick my hand as long as I will let him, I my opinion they are not only showing love but thanks for giving me a loving home. Animals are smarter than these know it all experts give them credit. Instead of trying to use animal psychology to explain their actions why not just understand that although they don’t think like us animals do show love and compassion.

Pretty sure that dogs lick each other's faces as a sign of submission and affection. Probably mostly they intend that when they do it to us too. I know that my half-husky does it to me when we get into my pickup to go to the trail to get a walk. He loves it and wants to show his appreciation, so he licks me once (never more) usually on the cheek. Pretty sure it means he's happy I'm his leader.

What a great comment! You're right, the bond created between a puppy and its mother through licking is fundamental and very tender. Interesting I know they’re a lot of myths. Their videos of a fish on the dock and the dog is using it snows to flip water on it and everybody’s like oh look the dogs trying to save the poor little fishy because he loves him. This is a dogs, natural instinct to bury food that it wants to eat later. That dog is literally thinking about eating that fish and trying to bury it. He’s not trying to save it, but it makes a cute video and people just believe whatever they’re told. There’s another video that’s famous where Bears pulling a crow out of his water feature at the zoo and he’s like he’s saving the crow. No he’s not. He’s pulling it out to see if he wants to eat it and then he just drops it cause he doesn’t feel like eating it. He wasn’t trying to save it, and if he’s hungry and doesn’t have a better food option, he will gladly eat that crow. . I didn’t know about the licking. I didn’t know about the salt part of it, but I assumed it was some sort of an affectionate thing like a kiss, but I guess they were just sizing us up to see if we were worth eating or maybe I thought we needed some grooming😂😂

I’ll leave food sitting around all the time and he won’t eat it. I’ll give him his food I prepare for him and leave it in his crate. He will eat it when he’s hungry and often leave it for hours at a time. Why do people assume dogs obsess over food? And moreover, why do people train their dogs around that assumption?

This is a very shallow video. Eating grass is likely improving gut health. It is much more likely that dogs have interest in grass (natural fiber) since it supports thier microbiome and gut health, as it does with many other species, including humans.
