  • How fast can a flail mower now? We took the TYM T474 and the Baumalight FMP260 for Torture Test. We are asked all the time in comments. How fast is a flail mower? This is a broad question with so many variables, but we are testing our setup the way we think most people will use the mower.

    I thought it was fun. 🙂 Here's an interesting experiment: Can a flail mower mow 5 foot tall grass? If you could find a patch that high, I think that would for another fun video. 😁 Keep up the great Tony and Tanja!!

      I wish i had that flail mower 25 yrs ago, when the hay is over ripe, we had to use the field chopper, which is called a flail chopper, had to take off chute, and open the rear door to let the hay out, think it would have done a better job

    Oh well that "Deluxe Heavy Duty" Brand New Flail mower did Great. That light newly planted pasture field was NO match for that mower. Perhaps an over grown two year old real "Brush field" would make a good demontration. In all practicalities a finish mower could of done the same with sharp blades. Want to see that "Baby" put to a Real test someday- like almost what a Forestry mulcer can do. Thank you Sir for the Excelent vidio and happy safe cutting.

      Not saying that a zero turn can do more than mow just saying that this short grass is not much of a challenge for that machine. I have been interested in a flail mower but I cut off my fields just once or twice a year with my bush hog. I would like to see a flail mower in those conditions in comparison to a bush hog or A.K.A. rotary cutter.

    As most always Chief I enjoyed the video. I am glad you took the time to have some fun with the equipment. A BFO observation = every field, every tractor, and every operators ability to hang on will be the determining factor. Bottom line, it will do a fine job if common sense is used. Man, realistically it looks a lot more like you're going to be out of practical speed before you run out of capability. The bouncing and rocking is probably going to become excessive from the un-sprung tractor suspension before you actually run out of capability in the mower. I'm darn impressed, I wasn't expecting that!

    I have found with my flail mower that if I'm mowing my pasture I can mow faster but if the grass or weeds gets up say 1 to 2 feet or more I can only mow in low range and have to really pay attention to the mower, because I have pulled down my tractor and have spun the belts. Now that I have mine setup correctly in the correct position with the front up some it mows a lot better. Also wet grass and weeds are a lot harder but you just have to slow down.

    Interesting Tony. Being a Horticulturist over here in England, I don’t have much opportunity for using a flail mower, especially connected to a mini tractor, but what was interesting was that it seemed that the higher the speed the less it cut the grass well. But what was really interesting was that it did cut it wellish across the board whatever speed it went. What would be interesting is how well it would do at different speeds if the grass was either a thicker variety of grass or if the grass was taller in growth and also at what grass height it would become too difficult either to cut or produce a decent cut.

  • @LitlD
    @LitlD Рік тому +1

    My comments may be a little late to the party, but I'd not be comfortable running that flail mower at the higher speeds regardless of whether or not the tractor is capable of those speeds. You run the risk of bouncing around in the seat, and overrunning any obstacles in the way: An errant rock, gopher hole, or even a dead animal would be chopped before you could see it and stop. But, I'm retired, so I can afford to take my time........
