- On the Silk Road, between Erzurum and Agri in eastern Turkey, the Tahir pass was the most difficult part of the journey.
During winter time the road was a nightmarefor the truck drivers on the way to Iran
i am proud to say to have been one of those drivers in early 1980, thanks for this video!!
Hello Helmut,
hope you keep well.
This is Ivan trucker from Italy.
We are an Bulgarian enterprise,we drive from Holland England to south Iran,Pakistan/China border.
Have met many Germans truckers over the last 20 years.
Driving today in those areas has become really dangerous.
@@istimaro7442 hi ivan, I proudly can say that I am Austrian citizen and retired now. I drove to Teheran about 24 times in early eighties. Greetings from Austria!
@@istimaro7442
greetings from Brazil.
I haul a reefer trailer through south america with a Scania R450: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay.
What kind of loads do you do?
İşlerini keyifle yapan insanlar zorlukları da kolayca aşar. thanks toprun for this video!!
Tahirliyim
What great memories this brings back. I would go back tomorrow if the clock could be turned back.
This brings back memories of nightmares past, Would do it all again, even in the old Magirus 310, the Ford transcon 350. or my old F89. Magic days (after the event ), never could stand driving in the UK.
why event ? … what did it feel lie to drive there ? Were there drivers that shit their pants and were so scared the quit driving ?
(I appreciate vintage truckers ) thanks.....
I used the pass in nov 1975 and yes it was horrendous we covered about 3 miles in 24 hours and i was driving a brand new Daf 2800
Respect for you drivers who crossed this! I've run to Alaska many times, And Mexico, but they are nothing compared to this in the 60s and 70s...

In reply to Hakan Alkan, yes the Iranian trucks used the same route as we did passing over Tahir.
Hy Ferdy, i my remember the "Silk Road" are in better condition as yet. you see it on the old pictures.
Today looks like the Road as a dead oneway road. Today she is not a pretty sight.
I Love this road in the summer, but in the winter she was a Beast and real Nightmare for everyone.
Thanks for your video. This time was the best on my trucker-life.
best regards from Germany
We came through here in our old Land Rover end of '75, Mum, Dad and four kids...cold but no snow...en route from England to Australia
Planning to do this route on my Jamaha 660 Tenere motor 😏. Nice video. I use to be A truckdriver but in the nineties Istanbul was the maximum it goes for european drivers. Respect for the men doing this jurneys to get some money for the familie.
The music is actually "Istanbul Dream" by DJ Kombo
Great video with superb music. Well done toprun.
respect for old drivers !!!
The way of real drivers.
They still use the same road its just that it now goes around Tahir, it was a military road.
Hey Ivor,
what is Tahir? Is that a name of a town or something?
Cheers!
Tahir is a village, Tahir Pass the silk road that passes it.
Gotcha!
Thanks mate!
Nice, as an English trucker I particularly like the 'rutting' on the main route from Namur to Brussels. ;)
I remember it from 1969.Although Tahir seems to attract the publicity there were lots of other places which were much steeper and with very cambered bends and certainly no joke in the snow! Tahir was not the worst place ,in fact when we arrived there on the way out we would say "Thats the bad bits done now there is only Tahir to do !!!"
petcann
I agree with you. Tahir wasn't the worst. What you remember is probably the "Kızıldağ Pass" (between Sivas and Erzincan). It was the most dangerous in winter conditions. And I guarantee it still is...
It was beautiful video. So thanks for sharing this video when I see this video I was so happy because I born there.
Such beautiful scenery. Would love to do that drive
Music name is "love" played by turkish delight
Great unknown heros ever
selber erlebt, ich finde dieses Video sehr cool, selbstfahrer gewesen in diesen internationalen transporten firma Lutra ! fortsetztung Iran, Irak.
They did an incredible Job back then, nothing comparable today... I would have shit my Pants, beeing afraid of not returning home
And still those roads are better than the once we have here in Belgium. :p
Those were the real heros, today conditions are much better, which i apreciate. So there is still one question from my side, i have seen so many trucks from iran in the 80s (I.R.I.T), on the road to europe trough ex-yugoslavia. Did they also use this road, is it the only one to get to iran?
Pioneers for the Middle East runs.
Message to Tom keir:
We are a Bulgarian enterprise lately we have been driving and still to Pakistan /China border.

Greetings from Karachi, have Now one Week rest to gather strengh.
Fai ancora quella rotta?
Se si come è? Mi piacerebbe fare questo genere di viaggi.
Scusa il disturbo
I drove to Karachi from Liverpool England, driving a Mercedes truck in the early 1970s with a load,of machinery on board, one and only long distance job, I left the truck in Karachi and flew back home.
As far as i was lead to believe there was a military road around the pass but the russians would not allow it to be used as it was right next to border. Would love to do the trip again and see how it has changed to 2019 from 1975
In November 1977 I had a ride from the Iranian border in a Turkish Volvo G89 that had taken a trailer of Danish cheese to Tehran and was returning empty to Istanbul. We went very close to the Soviet Armenian border, and the driver had me get down on the floor so the Soviet border guards in the watchtowers couldn't see me; foreigners like me were not allowed there. I wonder if that was the road you mention? He took it because it was safer in the winter, but later in the trip I helped him several times to chain his truck's tyres because the roads were so muddy. He said he preferred the older Volvos because if you hit a camel the cab would survive better than the newer trucks' cabs. Fun times!
this is the original road ? How were your feelings driving it again after 40 years ?

it looks like a good road for my ford 4x4 pickup but not big trucks hauling freight

+Bakos Gabor Drivers working for Hungarocamion were trained in UK road usage and correct roundabout procedure before coming over here. A very good idea, a shame more companies dont do it, UK vice versa..
Bizonyám! 👍😊
