  • On the Silk Road, between Erzurum and Agri in eastern Turkey, the Tahir pass was the most difficult part of the journey.
During winter time the road was a nightmarefor the truck drivers on the way to Iran

      Hello Helmut,
      hope you keep well.
This is Ivan trucker from Italy.
We are an Bulgarian enterprise,we drive from Holland England to south Iran,Pakistan/China border.
Have met many Germans truckers over the last 20 years.
Driving today in those areas has become really dangerous.

İşlerini keyifle yapan insanlar zorlukları da kolayca aşar. thanks toprun for this video!!

Hy Ferdy, i my remember the "Silk Road" are in better condition as yet. you see it on the old pictures.
Today looks like the Road as a dead oneway road. Today she is not a pretty sight.
I Love this road in the summer, but in the winter she was a Beast and real Nightmare for everyone.
Thanks for your video. This time was the best on my trucker-life.

I remember it from 1969.Although Tahir seems to attract the publicity there were lots of other places which were much steeper and with very cambered bends and certainly no joke in the snow! Tahir was not the worst place ,in fact when we arrived there on the way out we would say "Thats the bad bits done now there is only Tahir to do !!!"

As far as i was lead to believe there was a military road around the pass but the russians would not allow it to be used as it was right next to border. Would love to do the trip again and see how it has changed to 2019 from 1975

In November 1977 I had a ride from the Iranian border in a Turkish Volvo G89 that had taken a trailer of Danish cheese to Tehran and was returning empty to Istanbul. We went very close to the Soviet Armenian border, and the driver had me get down on the floor so the Soviet border guards in the watchtowers couldn't see me; foreigners like me were not allowed there. I wonder if that was the road you mention? He took it because it was safer in the winter, but later in the trip I helped him several times to chain his truck's tyres because the roads were so muddy. He said he preferred the older Volvos because if you hit a camel the cab would survive better than the newer trucks' cabs. Fun times!
