My grandfather was the bass player of The Cavaliers, he is the one pictured second from the left. He passed on Tuesday morning in Hospice Care, and this has made my entire day seeing y’all’s reaction video. Thank you for this, it was very healing. 💛

I know this is a year late, just seeing this. I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandfather passing. I always felt the bass player ( your Grandfather) really helped make the bones to this song. Always loved this song. But it was more of my Dads time. I'm only 50 but grew up with great music

They were not in the hospital, if you listen to the song again you will hear him say, when I woke up the rain was pouring down there was people standing all around, so you see they were still at the accident site when he found her and kissed her that "Last Kiss". Great reaction!

Dead teenager songs were coined as "Tear🩸 Jerkers "back in 60's. When those heavy old cars run off the road at speed limit, they could take down 2 or 3 telepoles💥🤕💔 Rip Del Shannon, also review his hit ,"Runaway"❤ 👍

When this song came out a lot of teenagers were being killed in car accidents on back roads some from drinking some from just driving too fast and vehicles that were fast but were made to handle the roads like they are today. It's a sad song but it was actually a reality at that time I mean a lot of young men and women did die in car accidents on back roads driving fast

In the 60's we had sad songs like this. I use to play this song on a 45 over and over and we would sing it because we knew all the words to it driving down the street when it came on our AM car radio. The music and singing in it was good, but sad, but gave you hope for seeing your loved one someday again in heaven and eternity.

It was called "Old Shep"- about losing his dog! I was only 5 but It still tears me up! And the saddest song by the Supremes a few years later was: "I'm Living In Shame".

These old songs really cover all the subjects of life. What I love about them is that people didn't just write "love" songs, or "break up songs". It feels like that is all you hear in todays music just those two categories. But back then they told stories, and talked about real things that happen in life. I can remember hearing that for the first time when I was a kid, and being sad, but at the same time I learned a little bit about the fragile nature of life and it taught me to never take life for granted. Great pic guys, have a wonderful day.

If you listen to the lyrics she died at the scene and not in the hospital.
When I woke the rain was pouring down
    There were people standing round
Something warm was running in my eyes
But I found my baby somehow that night
I held her close I kissed our last kiss
I found the love that I knew I would miss
Even though I held her tight
I lost my love my life that night

Where I grew up, and still live nearby, we used to see this play out on many a weekend, we were right on the border of our state, whose drinking age was 18, the state next door and only a couple miles away was 21 to purchase. there were many bars clubs etc in town for obvious reasons, along with a good selection of package stores, every weekend cars full of kids would flock in, some from over 100 miles away for the clubs and bars, along with many of the cars from far away to fill their trunks with booze, to take back for parties at home,(who knows how many crashed far away on the trip back) but it was almost "normal to have serious crashes-often fatal on many weekends-some horrific ones, like a large car full of kids going out of control. hitting a tree sideways, killing all of them, there were some human body parts scattered about at that one-the car broke up into 3 pieces, another was when a local on the way home from one of the watering holes lost it in a turn, hit a house, (a full-size sedan from the '50s) , the steering column was driven through the driver, through the driver's seat behind him, and into the padding of the back seat( the steering column in those days was a solid shaft, and did not collapse as they do now, being impaled wasn't all that uncommon, sadly in those days that, and other teen car crash songs were a far too common occurrence in some places, I and others hereabouts lost friends and classmates that way.
I also had a friend(now passed away) who had a girlfriend suddenly pass away from a heart attack-he never knew that his last kiss was to be just that, it affected him for many years, now and then he would get a bit tipsy, and ask to be dropped off outside the cemetery, go in and spend the remainder of the night sleeping on her grave-I several times dropped him off there, and others did as well, sometimes he would just walk there. Wish it were not so, but the themes of those songs were not at all farfetched.

I was born in '82, so after this song came out.. BUT it is one my grandma played all the time growing up.. when I was about 9 we (us cousins/grandkids) were told a story, when my grandma was in her teens, she was dating a boy. His sister one night got beat up by her boyfriend and needed a ride home. It has been icy out and he hasn't been driving very long. It snuck out and took the car to get her. On the way back home he got black ice they are both killed..

I don't know WHY these "teen tragedy" songs were so popular in the late 1950s and early '60s when I was about 8 to 10 years old, but they were - and my little best friend and I loved them. My favorites were this one, (Last Kiss,) and one called "Leader of the Pack" by the girl group, the Shangri-Las. Another favorite was "Laurie (Strange things happen in this world") - a sweet, romantic song about a guy who meets his soulmate at a dance, but finds out the next day she was a ghost. They were all big hit songs.
Most kids and teens haven't experienced such things in real life and for that reason can be moved by the drama and sadness of it all - without being hit so hard by the song as an adult who has experienced loss would be.

On December 22, 1962, five teenagers were riding in a 1954 Chevy on Highway 341 in rural Barnesville, Georgia. The driver was J.L Hancock, a 16-year-old who was dating Jeanette Clark, she died at the scene she was also 16 and riding in the front seat next to him. Beside her was Wayne Cooper; two other passengers, Jewel Emerson and Ed Shockley, were in the back seat. It was foggy, and by the time Hancock saw a flatbed truck stalled on the highway, it was too late. He crashed into it, going under the truck and killing everyone in the front seat; the two passengers in the back survived with serious injuries.

In the 50s and early 60s, car dashboards used to be nothing but wood and steel. Back then the car survived a wreck without much damage, but the inside became a blender.
They started regulating cars safety heavily to reduce deaths.
Had to watch a couple videos on the evolution of vehicle safety for a job. It's quite interesting

This is based on a true story. It may be a bit different from the actual event, though, as many stories are.

As others have mentioned, there was a rash of these death songs in the late '50s/early '60s that were hits, Here's a quick rundown -
1958 - Endless Sleep - released and written by Jody Reynolds. Hit number 5 on the top ten charts.
1959 - Teen Angel - released by Mark Dinning, written by his sister with her husband. Number 1 hit.
1960 - Tell Laura I Love Her - released by Ray Peterson. Written by Jeff Barry, who originally wrote it about a rodeo, but RCA Records asked him to rewrite it to be about a car crash, to be more like Teen Angel! It reached number 7 in the US, although a cover of it by Ricky Valance hit number one in the UK.
1961 - Last Kiss (this song!) - released and written by Wayne Cochran. Wayne began the song after seeing many accidents on the road he lived on in Georgia, but halfway through it his drummer's girlfriend's 16 year old sister was killed in a horrible car accident and he dedicated the song to her. He had 3 co-writers who helped writing the song. His release did not become a hit. The song was covered by J. Frank Wilson in 1964 reaching number 2 on the charts (The Supremes "Baby Love" was number 1). But "Last Kiss" did spend 8 weeks in the top ten.
1970 - Patches - released by "Chairman of the Board" and written by "Chairman of the Board" member General Johnson and Ron Dunbar, this song was much later than the flurry of death songs between '58 and '64, but worth mentioning. Another song that didn't actually chart by the original, although it was the b-side of "Everything's Tuesday" which hit number 38 on the charts. Later in the year it was it was heard by the blind blues singer Clarence Carter, who covered the song and it reached number 4 on the Hot 100 chart and number 2 on the R&B chart.

You two are awesome it's great to see how you love the old music. I would love to see your reaction to Endless Sleep by Jody Reynolds.
