- In this special edition of Stuview TV, we pay a visit to the wonderful Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The outdoor scenes for the classic comedy series Dad's Army were filmed in and around Thetford, so this lovely town is the perfect location for a museum dedicated to the series and it's wonderful cast.
If you have enjoyed this video, there are lots more just like it on the Stuview TV channel. From memories of 70s and 80s TV shows and classic British comedy, to forgotten nostalgic treasures and fun 70s/80s quiz games.

RIP ian lavender ... last lovely boy to leave the platoon...
Such a friendly family comedy, compared today’s modern crap rest in peace to all the cast you made a classic that will last for generations
Spot on!
It captures some of those war time values ,that we hear so much of
Very interesting that so many viewers of this channel can't seem to just enjoy something without immediately getting annoyed about something else
Like come on folks, some plain old fashioned positivity please
What a fabulous place to visit. Thank you for sharing. Dad's Army remains one of my all-time favourite comedies.👍
The museum is a fitting tribute to such a wonderful series and is well worth a visit.
I love Dad's Army. I watch it on UA-cam everyday. The shows never get old or boring: they were extremely well written and performed.
I absolutely agree. I have the DVD box set and I watch it often. I think I know every line but that doesn't matter. If only someone would produce something as good today.
Wow! Its Stu in the flesh, the voice of our yesteryear has a body! This was a great video Stu,what a great location. If there's a remake I think you're in with a chance of being a character in it with that tin hat on🤣thankyou mate✌️🍻
Yes indeed, it's me in person!😃 The museum is wonderful and packs such a lot into a relatively small space. Thanks as always, Martin.👍
Loved this. Thanks, Stu. 😊
I love Dad's army and still watch my box set collection to this day. Great comedy.
thanks stu , from wigan , lancs
There is/was also a smaller DA museum at Bressingham Steam Gardens. I was last there about 10 years ago and they had Jones Butchers Van.
But look at this it seem Thetford is its natural home.
Looks like a fine day out. Like many of a certain age, Dad's Army has a special place in my heart. Thursday night, sitting with dad, eating fish and chips (mum always went out to a ladies' club on Thursday nights) or pie and mash, and we'd watch Tomorrow's World, Top Of The Pops, and Dad's Army. I use a 'Stupid Boy' tea mug every day, and I have a Walker T-shirt - he was my favourite character, and I do remember crying when the news reported James Beck's terribly premature death. It was a lovely show that still makes me laugh, no matter how many times I watch it. And the depth and love given to the characters was, and is phenomenal. We think 'Back story' is a new thing, but every main character had one. The best had to be Godfrey - who was shamed when it was found out he had been a conscientious objector in the last war - but had been highly decorated for rescuing several men under heavy fire whilst on the front as a stretcher bearer. That puts Mainwearing in his place.
And Walker - he's rather looked down upon for being a 'spiv', but as the show progresses, it's obvious that everyone, including Mainwearing and the prissy Vicar, are using his services.
Yes, the detailed back story of each of the characters is something that Dad's Army doesn't get enough credit for. Wonderful writing. The museum evokes the warmth and spirit of the series and is definitely worth a visit.
The wax works were awful, especially walkers! Nice Video though
Always great to put a face to a voice. Excellent video Stu.
Thank you kindly!
Absolutely first rate video stuview and fantastic to see you in person on the video for the first time and dad's army is my all time favourite sitcom all the characters were brilliant at playing their parts in the sitcom and sad to think that Ian lavender was the last survivor of the dad's army sitcom cast brilliant presentation stuview and rest in peace to all the iconic dad's army sitcom gone but not forgotten 😊😊😊
Amazing as to how little original items have survived.
If you stay in that pub/hotel that has the rooms named after the characters Dad’s Army and they don’t tell you what room you are in can you assume that it’s Pike? Lol
😆when you book in they say "your name will go in ze register " 😂
the guy stood in front of Mr. Jones's van looks like a tall Godfrey, but with Mr. Cheeseman's teeth. lol
I still have the board game, although it is in a tatty condition. one in good condition now sells for a few hundred quid, due to the controversy of the triangular swastika pieces.
That's one game that I never had but really wished that I did.
That was great Stu, I never knew there was a Dad's Army Museum, thank you for taking us around with you, loved the picture 😁 the tin hat does suit you 😃
I was quietly pleased that the hat fitted me as normally things like that are too small! 😀 Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks as always Julie!
It looked great Stu 👍 many thanks.
Hello Stu, thanks for the tour video. Really enjoyed it. Were you there for a job interview ? 😁
I was but didn't get the job as they thought I was too old!😉
That was really enjoyable. It was really nice to see you try a slightly different format, and would be more than happy for you to do more like this. As always, many thanks Stu.
That's lovely to hear Mark. Thank you!
I had the Dad’s Army game as a child. Loved it.
0:13 I'm A Huge Dad's Army Fan. Thanks Mate. XXxxx ❤🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🇺🇸
My pleasure.
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed the video very much.
That's great to hear, many thanks!
The fuzzy-wuzzies...they don't like it up 'em.
What a great vid Stu. I live in Maine USA.Thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it Alan. Many thanks!
Always nice to put a face to the serene voice!😙
You're just as I imagined you, Stu. 😊
Classic funny comedy stu...permission to whisper Sir 😅
Thank you for uploading this, didn’t even know the museum existed. Lovely memories of watching Dads army, with my grandad, while my mum and Nan went to Bingo.😊
Well, well well; by an amazing coincidence I dreamt that I met Private Walker last night, or rather the actor Jimmy Beck. Unfortunately in my dream he wasn't as nice as I had hoped, however that may be linked to the fact that in real life I was formerly married to a...Jo Walker!
That looks like it is worth a visit next time i'm in Norfolk. Always baffled me though, why they filmed around Thetford and other Norfolk locations. The actual location was suggested to be in Sussex, near Eastbourne, which has a very picturesque landscape, but nothing like the 'flatness' of Norfolk!?
Lovely episode, Dads army the best British comedy series ever, from a bygone gentle era and a main part of my dvd collection...10 out of 10 Stu..keep up the good work lol...oh yes, also nice to put a face to the voice :)
Many thanks!
I used to live in Watton just up the road. My sister lived in Carbrooke adjacent to the then airfield. Some of the opening title shots were filmed at the back of her house. My brother lived in Merton and his neighbour said they were often seen filming and in and around the area. Even until recent when I stayed at his house it wasn't uncommon to see soldiers training. We were told they filmed some lake shots at Lynford Lakes where a few years later "Allo, Allo" was filmed in the quadrangle at Lynford Hall.
My mum's neighbour who worked in Thetford at the time said she often saw them in The Bell and they would all speak to local people except Arthur Lowe who was a snob.
Nice video. I visited a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps worth mentioning is the fact that the Burrell traction engine museum is a 10 minute walk away through the pedestrianised town centre, and they often have traction engines running on days when the Dad's Army museum is open.
When James Beck dies in 1973 it was the first time I felt sorrow for losing someone I had loved spending time with.
great video also nice to a face to the voice
Many thanks!
When we watched as kids in the 70s, with our parents, miss those days when families were together, miss programes all about murders or sex, sorry I am older and there are no comedy on telly, and people with no crisma
Nice to see the museum getting some love! Did you get to go to Bressingham and see the exhibition there? Worth a look if not, some of their vehicles were also used in the show.
No, I didn't get the opportunity to go there. Will certainly try to visit next time.
Is that your good lady wife Stu at the end either side of the Captain Mainwaring statue?
It is indeed.
One my favourite episodes😢 is one I never knew existed & the last I got to enjoy brand new .... it is where mainwarings brother comes to town ... played superbly by arthur lowe...some very clever split screen utilised & a very happy sad episode....expert written...perry & croft what a partnership...I ❤ that perry wrote walker for himself & croft said no to playing the part....without a doubt my favourite TV show...
Great one Stu, thanks a million! ……but do you think that was wise 🤣🤣
😀 My pleasure!
Brilliant Stu. I went there a few years back and it was superb.
Thank you!
Great choice for your first awayday vid. Really enjoyed it. Love to see similar.
Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks.
How wonderful. My favourite tv series remembered. Thank you for sharing your visit with us.
My pleasure!
Wow great video ,and a great comedy show ,although set in uncertain times ,that period seems so much better than now
Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks!
Splendid stuff,thanks.
I really enjoyed that Stu. I've been meaning to visit for ages and your video has made me keener than ever. ❤
It's certainly worth a visit. Such a lot packed into a fairly small space. Glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks as always!
I have the honour of having made the truly great Jimmy Perry laugh. I'd bunked off school to watch them film 'Hi-De-Hi'. During a break I asked him for his autograph. He seemed surprised and asked why. Nervous and tongue tied I blurted out "Because you writ it!" which made him (and a nearby Yellow Coat) laugh out loud! I've dined out on this story for years! Can't wait for the next time I get to tell it! 😁
Love it!
Thank you for sharing this
That was great, I enjoyed that. Interesting to see Corporal Jones' uniform when he married Mrs. Fox (Pamela Cundell.) We never found out her first name I don't think, she was always called just Mrs. Fox, lol. Glad you and your missus had a good time there.
Thanks Carole. Yes, we had a great time!
Excellent video; thanks!!
Magic, I enjoyed this. Well done. It's great to see the man behind the wonderful voice.
Glad you enjoyed it Martin! Thanks.
Thanks thanks stu what a great on location video! Don't need a respectful management manner towards the museum where you picked out little bits of the museum to make your video, but you haven't gone around showing every single artifact just giving people the idea of what's there. He's good to make sure people do go to the museum and it was great to put a voice to the face. Love dad's army. Even though I'm only 40, I've watched it all my life and still watch it to this day
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks.
My Mum and I visited the museum before we moved from Norfolk and we had a great day out! It's well worth a visit if you're into Dad's Army. I'd probably say if you're not local (we were an hour away then) you might want to plan some other things to do as it's not going to take a whole day to see, unless you read everything. Mind you that was over a decade ago so maybe they've added some stuff now. I can't remember if they had the van then, I'd have to look up my photo's to see. Teflon coated memory!
Anyway, Nice to put a face to the voice Stu! Yeah, more stuff like this would be great!
On certain days you can go on a tour of some of the Dads Army locations. Otherwise, like you say, it's not a full day in the museum. We had a walk around the town and then enjoyed some lunch in The Bell Inn.
Great video Stu. What a marvelous comedy Dads Army was showing the true fighting spirit of the second world war. Nice to see you in the video too Stu loved it
Glad you enjoyed it Robert! Many thanks.
Cheers from Indiana
That was fantastic, thank you so much for this entertaining vlog , best wishes from your Aussie viewers
That's lovely to hear. Thanks Australia!
I'd love to visit this place, but it would have to be part of a longer holiday. Too far for a day trip. Great video, Stuart.
Hi Steve. We went as part of a holiday to Great Yarmouth. It still took an hour to get there even from there!
Are you extremely large, or is Captain Mainwaring on the small side?
The Captain is on the smaller side.
ENJOYED THAT STU I LOVE DADS ARMY
Thank you!
That was certainly a change. Dont think a 5min video could justify the museum and programme though to be honest.
Looks great Stu! Hope to see more videos like this soon.
Thanks!
We're all doomed 🤣
Fantastic. Thanks, Stu. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
Hello Stu😃 I did not realise there was a Dad’s Army Museum. I will certainly look that one up. “Dad’s Army” was my Father’s favourite programme. He always said that “Dad’s Army” was so true to life.
Hi Alison. It really is worth a visit. For a relatively small building, they manage to pack such a lot in and it would be easy to spend such a long time in there. The volunteers who run the museum are all so friendly and knowledgeable too.
Fabulous. Thank you.
My pleasure!
I hope to visit one day ❤
Excellent.
Many thanks!
Very nice. Looks like a fun trip.
So may memories! Thanks for capturing the visit!
My pleasure.
Mr Jones’ van. I’ve been in that 😊 I was involved in the production of a spoof film on Dads army by a group of amateur filmmakers in Kent in the early 1990s.
Fantastic!
