      @@neuronoc.7343 I have UBS floppy, & I did check the switch. Could it be because I'm using windows 10?

    Some USB floppy drives are limited to the standard 1.44 MB MS-DOS floppies and can't even read the "older" 720 kB MS-DOS floppies
    If Windows asks for a driver most USB drives can be forced to work without their "official" drivers by manually selecting the "Generic NEC Floppy Disk" driver (the same used by internal floppy drives) but I had one (I-something, I can't remember if it was Imation or Iomega) that needed it's own very specific drivers...

    Not sure if this is an appropriate question for this video, but do people still use these disks? I have boxes of these new and not sure if they are worth posting to sell?

    Can you use cmd to run ms dos games from floppy disk?

    • @NetworkAdvisor
      @NetworkAdvisor  Рік тому +3

      If you had a game that was completely contained on a floppy, then I suppose you could. Usually those disk-based games get loaded into memory (RAM).

      DOS is no longer available in Windows NT.
      NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) ended with the Windows 7 32bit editions.
      You can load em in a VMWare MS DOS or Windows 95, 98, ME instance.

    Do you have any idea if anything can be done if given the following error? Copied all files into a folder like you suggest in video, but when I go to open the install file, I get “this app can’t run on your pc. To find a version for your pc, check with the software publisher”
    It’s a Mario game from 1995 I was wanting to show my kiddos.

      I might not be the one to ask but windows used to have a "compatibility mode" where you could tell it to treat an old application as though it was In a windows 95 or XP environment.

      can you try a different machine? If so and you still get the error, then either the floppy drive reader is bad, or the diskette itself is unreadable. :-/

      @@NetworkAdvisor I have 2 external floppy USB drives that were brand new. I was using one and copying a lot of disks and then is started giving me a "A:\ drive is no accessible" error. I swapped to other diskettes and then to the other USB floppy drive with the same result. After rebooting, I could get one or the other drive working with limited success before receiving the same error. The problem seems to be with my W10 laptop and not with the diskettes or external drives. I did update my drivers after the problem started, but no change. Any thoughts?

      Almost sounds like a USB issue. Sometimes USB ports get messed up with certain devices. (They have like a mini device e database of things that have been plugged in before).
      One idea might be to try a USB hub. This might be enough to make the computer think the drives are new devices not seen before.

    Our 25 year old machine had the DNC fail. Need a way to get files onto a 3.5" discs from a modern computer. Then load them onto the CNC machine to run the program. What are the different types of formats for 3.5" discs?

    • @NetworkAdvisor
      @NetworkAdvisor  7 місяців тому

      Most 3.5 floppies used in dos or windows machines were formatted in what is known as FAT. However, that may not be what you CNC machines need if they using some proprietary operating system. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

    No so fast! Tese USB drives will not read all of the non-pc formats like from Atari, Amiga or old musical instruments or other electronic equipment that used floppy drives.
