    I've owned 4 Eastman acoustics (including a prototype rosewood b/s slope shoulder then called the EJ45) and 2 electrics. Great guitars.
    Just as a frame of reference (prices rounded)
    $5500 CJ-35
    $1500 E10-SS
    $800 E1-SS Ltd

      CJ sounds crisper more clarity and punch in the mid range than the Eastie’s to my ear. I guess all that money has to come through in the sound!! I love Eastmans and own them but the Collings make them sound dare I say wishy washy 😲

    Collings seems super clean and articulate. Nice balance high to low and I am not sure if it's because of the mic or what but seems like a sound canon. Eastman very close and super good especially considering its price point.

    Lovely demonstration. Clearly music can be made with any of them. But I am sure the slightest of mic placement difference could have had a significant impact on the recorded sound. I would say:
    1. CJ35
    2. E1SS
    3. E10SS
    All sound great though. What we can't know is how effortless it is to play each guitar and I am curious about your opinion.
    EDIT: Listening again, maybe the E1SS might be number 1!

    • @ianmeadows6351
      @ianmeadows6351  5 років тому +6

      Thank you for the kind words. No doubt you are right about minute mic placement differences. I try to get it as close as I can, but still. I would agree that theyre all fine instruments capable of making music too. I look at these videos just as a way to give players a general idea of the tonal variations in all of these guitars.
      As to the ease of playability, they're fairly similar as they've all been set up we'll. I will say that Collings attention to detail and precision is a thing of beauty, they are very well made. But I wouldn't say one of these is particularly easier to play.

    I’ll be picking up an Eastman soon. The electrics are extraordinary as well. Hand made. Also the acoustics have a longer scale length than most common acoustics. I think it suites them very well. Nice playing and very good sound quality as well. Subbed!!

      @@ianmeadows6351 Hey, I actually got one of those, largely because of your videos of it. One thing - it came stringed with .12 gauge. I have been playing very little acoustic in the last years, so it's normal to feel those 12s, but still, the guitar feels a bit stiff. What are your impressions? Is such string tension average, or above average? On the other side, I really like the sound of it now and am weary of going down to .11s.

      @@Morten_Nielsen1979 Thanks! I can't really measure it right now, but will definitely check this. But it feel pretty good for an acoustic, and there's no string buzz - only a little bit when I drive it louder with the pick. Btw, this is the amazing part with this guitar - you can dig in and it preserves balance and fatness of sound.

    • @Morten_Nielsen1979
      @Morten_Nielsen1979 5 років тому

      @@soundshigh The distance between the 12 fret metal and the strings should be the width of a matchstick. Almost all new guitars have too high action. And some frets that stick out - these should be leveled so minimum string height can be achieved.

  • @rmzzz76

    Eastman sounds closer to the Gibson it's imitating, a great sounding guitar regardless... The Collings sounds like a Collings, more sustain and shimmer. This is expected because the Collings is based off the vintage Gibson J-35 whereas the Eastman E10SS is pretty much a clone of the modern J-45 Standard but with an Adirondack top. The Collings has with the Gibson J-35 it was based on has pre-war style non-scalloped bracing, the E10SS has scalloped bracing like the modern J-45 and well even the modern J-45 Vintage uses scalloped bracing. That's probably your biggest differential on tone . There is no "one is better" just pure preference.

    • @ianmeadows6351
      @ianmeadows6351  5 років тому +3

      Sure enough! I try not to spend time with any "bad" guitars. They're all good, it just comes down to the player.

    • @SiggyMe
      @SiggyMe 2 роки тому +1

      The Gibson J-35 have different angles in the x part of their braces. The X angle is larger that broadens out the frequency response, less focused sound, and the J-45 X bracing is much more acute smaller angle which gives a narrow frequency response that sounds more focus. Just thought I throw that in. Now I'm sure if the Eastman E10SS has the smaller acute X brace giving a more focus or the boarder like the J-35 sounding more open and dynamic.
